East Grand Rapids Students Boycott Dance - Hold Charity Event Instead

Students boycott an East Grand Rapids High School dance to show they think the school went too far.

Juniors and seniors from the school put together separate Valentine's day dances to protest actions school officials took.

It all started when the district learned of pictures on a popular blogging website showing as many as 20 minors drinking alcohol.

School administrators suspended the students from extra-curricular activities including the Valentine's Day dance.

Saturday night, upperclassmen planned their own dance at DeVos Place and it turned into a charity event.

Money raised at the dance is being donated to Mel Trotter Ministeries. Students say so far they've raised more than a thousand dollars.

They say they're glad the events of the week are behind them and they can enjoy their dance.

In an effort to get the school's side of this story, WZZM 13 went to East Grand Rapids Middle School Saturday night where the school sponsored dance was held, but we were asked to leave.

Some of the suspended students are appealing their punishments saying there is no proof they were drinking or that alcohol was even present.

Boy Charged With Felony For Powdered Sugar
Police Say Sugar Brought To School Look-Alike Drug

(CBS) AURORA Police in Aurora have confirmed that a 12-year-old boy who said he brought powdered sugar to school for a science project last week has been charged with a felony for possessing a look-alike drug.

The sixth grade student at Waldo Middle School in Aurora also was suspended for two weeks from school after showing the bag of powdered sugar to his friends.

The boy, who is not being identified because he is a juvenile, said two other boys asked if the bag contained cocaine after he showed it to them in the bathroom Wednesday morning. The boy's mother said he told them it did, but then added, "just kidding."

Aurora police arrested the boy after a custodian at the school reported the boy's comments. The youngster was taken to the police station and detained before being released to his parents that afternoon.
