As many of you know, we are networking with increasing numbers of American parents and grandparents as we attempt to make a difference and prevent drug use by young people. One of our network partners, Drug-Free Kids: America's Challenge, based near Washington, D. C. has contacted us about an upcoming event in Washington, D. C.
Background: For several years, drug legalizers, who have told kids in High Times Magazine for years, "There is no particular evidence even those few young people who smoke a great deal of marijuana necessary hurt themselves academically or otherwise," and other such harmful messages have designated the date of April 20th as a day to hold marijuana smokeins annually. Many even promote the idea that daily marijuana smoking should be practiced at 4:20 p.m. daily. The # 420 was all over the Columbine shooters' websites. No one seemed to know what it meant--even after we called the Sheriff's office and told them. This has always been a problem--the kids knew--the parents did not! We're uniting to change that. ACTION: For several years, parents have stood back and watched with dismay but done nothing. This year, in just 16 days--on April 20,2004--we plan to gather on Capitol Hill either outside the US Capitol or in a room in the Rayburn House Office Building on Capitol Hill and announce we are taking back the day of April 20 and establishing it instead as An annual day of remembrance for those children we've lost.
April 20 is also, as you know, the date of the Colombine shootings in Colorado. When Joyce Nalepka, DFK: America's Challenge, called me, I immediately said, "We want to help." I then asked her, "Did you know that April 20th was also my deceased son's birthday?" She did not; however, we both were shocked by the "coincidence." Eerie that 04/20/04 is the same # forward or back!
We are calling on everyone in our network's to help make this a success. We are surveying 500 plus families to get an idea how many will commit to come to Washington to attend this event and help send a message to the congress that legalizing any illicit drug for any purpose--including so-called "medical joints" is an attack on our American family. Our main message to Congress is: "We will never forget and we will not let you forget our children either." We have already buried too many of our family members. Our plan is to read 420 names of young people who have lost their lives because they believed the misinformation of the legalizers.
Please bring a photo of your child and plan to read his/her name with your hometown and state. We will also be asking Congress to establish a permanent monument site as a memorial to our young people lost to this horrible addiction--If any of you have a close relationship with a US Senator or Congressman, please feel free to ask him/her to be a sponsor of both the date and the monument. We welcome your ideas. Just this past week you must have heard of the horrific tragedy in Bradford County, PA. The individual that murdered these two cops in cold blood did not become meth dealers/manufacturers overnight, they were also dope dealers in their earlier years. We have to stop sending mixed messages to our children. Just to get an idea the extent of the problem, also go to "google," then, enter "OurWall" and note the names of young people listed as drug-related deaths. There are over 20,000 overdose deaths among youth per year according to White House statistics. We must turn it around.
Joyce Nalepka is the founder of Drug-Free Kids: America's Challenge. She has been in this fight for over 25 years, it is time to come together as one and really do something about what is happening to our country.
