Did any of you ever try to get your records from Straight? Was anyone successful at it?

I called Straight in St Pete (of course I don't remember the year), when they were still in operation to ask for a copy of my records be mailed to me. I was told by the female staffer they do not release records.

yeah, they lied.  Fl law says their your records and they are required to turn them over to you.  I think quite a few of tried to get ours and were told the same thing.  If I only knew then...

I think I'd like to browse through a pile of them, try and get a sense of who the intended readers might be. But yeah, the content was nothing but a fucking slam book just like the obs books. Intake records? what would they have consisted of with a bunch of uneducated idiots writing in them? When you have a 13 year old and a 16 year old doing your intake what in the fuck would have been written in them anyway????? And who would have filled them out ? shit a 13 yr old with T&R doing your intake was only allowed use of a pen to wite a dam MI.

Yeah, exactly that. I think a little collection of them w/ names and identifying info blocked out would be an interesting display of avant-garde litterature. We can try to explain to people till we're all beyond caring the complete definition of "intake" Program style or the complex laviathan of COC and not carry it accross. But I wonder what people would think if they could see for themselves the content of those internal docs.

It's a catch 22, though. The potential harm that could come to ppl's lives and wellbeing ....

Having only participated in a few intakes on second phase, I have no idea what kinds of internal documents were kept. Can you, or anyone else, elaborate? Speculation or fact is fine, since things likely varied from intake to intake.

I am almost 100% sure that every patient/client has access to their own records.  You are entitled to a copy.  Again, I think there is legal precedent for this.

Yeah, well that would be great if they weren't all destroyed as most of them seem to have been.  I know a couple of people who asked for their records early on and were told in no uncertain terms that they were the property of Straight.  At 17, 18 and 19 you're not really familiar with the laws concerning medical records.

Some asked for theirs a few years after they got out and were told they no longer existed.

They have to keep, and provide, the records for usually 5-7 years, depending on the state. If you had some sort of proof or if you had known (not likely as a teenager) that it was your right at that time, you probably could have gotten your records. At this point, if it's past the 5 or 7 years since you were in there, there's likely nothing that can be done unfortunately, except to help educate people who more recently got out of a facility.

It will surprise everyone to find out what Straight official told the FBI in March 1993 during their investigation regarding your records.
