For those who are not aware, the ads I am talking about are the text based ad units located at the top of this forum that say ?Ads by Google? on the left. These ads are automatically generated by the text on the page the ad is displayed on. So, as an example, the thread titled ?illegal things at WWASP? returned the following 5 text link options:
1) Sleep Away Camps
2) Boarding Schools
3) Troubled Teens
4) Juvenile Boot Camps
5) Cross Creek Manor
If you click on any of those they bring you to a page that lists links to behavior modification programs and EDCONS that many of us disagree with.
Ginger, I started this thread and I am sorry if it sounded like I was attacking you. I just strongly disagree with your decision to place these ads on your site. I have a real problem with Lon of strugglingteens choice to advertise such programs as WWASP, and you are doing the same by putting Google ads on your site.
I never was suggesting you would have a membership or a fee. Why not put a donate link at the top of each page?

Or, if you're looking at the web forum hosting forum, there are ads for geek wear. If you're looking at hot topics, lately, there are ads for term papers and other junk. I keep seeing ads for free forum hosting. Doesn't bother me. The more the merrier. Less load on my server and more diversity in the marketplace of ideas.
In a free market, good ideas thrive and bad ones suffer. That's my gambit right there. Always has been. So now I'm testing it in nearby new waters.

Oh, no need to apologize at all! But please be responsive to my answers and questions. I think I made a pretty good argument toward overcoming some of the objections and now I want you to further support them.

Different in two regards that I can think of. If the book Come Clean turns up in a google ad, it'll turn up here. If Help at Any Cost by Maia Szalavitz has an ad, it'll be there.
Lon only accepts ads from private payors. I don't think he could afford to let in a random sampling of what the market reflects.
People around here will buy those books. But you couln't pay us to take private teen gulags. We're not buying. Do you think a prospective mark stands a better chance coming out of the encounter unscathed if they come accross the pitch here or somewhere else?

No, that was someone else's suggestion "why don't you pay the bills, then." And I don't want to panhandle. I've had to do that just once for this site, that's quite enough for me, thanks. Just ... distasteful to me, ya know? But I'll earn it and I'll earn it honestly or I'll see it through to bust and do something else.

RFornit (12:02:36 AM): Oh, to be a fly on the wall first time someone calls up a WWASP hotline and says "well, I found your ad on this site called fornits? This is an escort service, right? Well..."

I'm moving this to web forum hosting w/ the rest of the conversation. I'll leave a bread crumb trail back to here.
