I DID read the link provided- thank you! Kwanza sounds like a very positive, life-affirming celebration. But why have this celebration at a time when there is so much else going on?
You don't have to be a "Christian" to appreciate Jesus or to celebrate Christmas. I am surely not a "Christian", but I look to Jesus for inspiration, especially in doing my work as a nurse. And I enjoy Christmas, to spend time with my family, and I like to give gifts- things people will enjoy, as a token of my love.
I am not African-American either, but if Kwanza were held at a different time, (February seems appropriate), I would enjoy taking the time to participate in the celebration.
I have lots of African-American, and African, friends, most of whom ARE Christian, they celebrate Christmas and New Years, and consequently do not have the time to get very much involved with Kwanza.
My family is Irish-American, and EVERYONE likes to celebrate St. Patricks day, and it's in March, so theres a lot more involvement than there would be if we held it in December.
