Forced Confessions= Telling some silly unimportant shit to your parents, you didnt have to say anything you didnt want to say, really it was your own choice to do so.

Snitch Culture= I minded my own business, why didnt you?

Really, the way you put it sounds so dramatic.
Maybe you should change your perspective.
It was all kind of ridiculous in reality.

When I was there, it was obvious that many residents really belonged in a psychiatric hospital. I remember one resident who was tripping 24/7. His name was Tony. He lived next door to a bathtub chemist before he was sent to Elan. He was extremely suicidal as his head was always messing him up. He ate like a dozen busted up glass salt and pepper shakers and a hand full of razor blades, slashed his wrists,stomach,and neck,and went to bed. I happened to be the night man and found him like that. He was taken away and never came back. They never told us what happened to him.
      Anyway,not all of us were that messed up really. But a certain percentage of us are fucking nuts.

Was it really possible to just mind your own business at Elan? It wasn't in Straight at all, though I tried to keep to myself as much as possible. And I also knew better than to tell them anything really important. But some kids didn't see it coming. They got pressured and, alternately, cajoled into divulging very sensitive info. that would later be used against them.

Now, that's where I strongly suspect Elan is just the same as any other TC. Ya'll are still doing that.

This made me laugh a little. Everybodys business in Elan is to be in everybody elses business.
    I have never heard of the phrase "snitch culture". It fits. Most of the time I was in Elan was spent in Parsonsfield in a house that was filled with groups of freinds (otherwise known as contracts). Personally I remember just going through the motions to advance and to keep the cigarettes coming. Sometimes it was all you could do not to laugh when having to deal w/ freinds and such. We spent a LOT of time dealing with the outsiders(crazies),this in turn kept the focus  off of us.
