Basically - a fake. A pretender. A poser - used to deflect and confuse an issue. Also, a fake, as in a person of pretended power; ability, education and so on - who really has none of the above. A figure head kind of thing - only when you say Straw man - you infer they are disposable - unlike the all important figure head. When you are done with a straw man, you can burn him. You need not  offer severance pay or anything of the kind.

A straw man argument is putting words in your opponents mouth your opponent didn't say - to make your opponent look to be making a poor argument. Happens in politics all the time.

What is an "advocate"?
