I went to Goa in August 2001 to work on a documentary, I was hoping to interview cleo. but She had passed away in March of 2001, I was staying at the guest house next door to the house she was renting for the last part of her life. They let me wander around her home and look at her things. she had a calendar appointments and notes on the wall. It seemed that she did not intend to die so suddenly. I spoke to her doctor who works in the village, he was very forthcoming with info because he thought I could help him break into Cleos computer and find out what she had written about him. Apparently she had been working on a book, and had sent the manuscript off to friends in New Yorkl This was odd. He said that she died of a massive brain tumour. He had been her physician. She was found dead at  her house (next door to the White Negro guest house in Anjuna village Goa. He had inherited all her possessions including her moped and dog, who now lives at the hospital-nursing home where he works. He said that he was in Italy when she died, he wanted to have a service...but the government mortuary had already cremated her body by the time he got back to Goa.

I just stumbled onto this site and was startled to learn that Cleo is dead. I was in a Thai class with her at AUA in Bangkok in 1987 when she was learning the language to do her research for "Patpong Sisters." I used to see her around Bangkok periodically, and she once recommended to me the travel agency I used when I visited Vietnam in 1988.  I didn't keep in touch, but I bought a copy of "Patpong Sisters" in the early 90s. She was unique.

I hope someone writes a biography of Cleo-- she was an amazing, fascinating person. Perhaps those who knew her could share more information about her.
