"Hi, I graduated peer group 24 at NWA. I had just heard recently that cedu had shut down and while checking out the facts online, I stumbled upon this webpage. I don't quite know how to pigeon-hole my CEDU experience; in some ways I resent having my highschool years stolen from me, but other times I'm happy about having been there. When I first graduated in May of 2004, I was pretty full of piss and vinegar, but since then I've had a little more time to cool down.

Throughout the program I was labeled "negative" and pretty much got yelled at in RAPS at least once a week. I had the most number of table restrictions out of any of other kids then in attendance by the second half of my "career" and had been on 2 full-times. I had come pretty close to being sent to Ascent twice throughout the program. (Grapes in a Nalgene...) I  never cried in propheets and got not one "live" vote from from my uncharacteristically well indoctrinated peer group during the Summit. Graduation was the happiest day of my life. Pochabel's Cannon still puts a smile on my face to this day.

Cedu took me away from my home, my friends and my family, but it also took me away from a lot of drugs and a life that may not have gone anywhere (without a great deal more effort).

After graduating from Northwest Academy, I took a year off to really reflect on what had happened. I did end up doing a lot of drugs during that year, but I also managed to matriculate at Colby College as a freshman this year.

When the interim year approached an end, I was able to turn of the drug use immediately (with manageable withdrawal) - something I'm not sure if I would've been able to do otherwise. I'm currently studying pre-med and have been drug-free since August (well mostly...smoke a little pot now and then and drink like a...well college student). In this respect, I am thankful for the way that things turned out.

However, Cedu did not leave me scratch free. Residual anger, guilt and distrust distance me from my family. I wake up sweating and panicking and thrashing almost every other night. (something that started at the beginning of my NWA experience...fear of escorts perhaps?) I'm very uncomfortable and fidgety around adults; I tend to avoid eye contact with authority, and I'm constantly paranoid  about punishment and consequence, even for the smallest offenses. I'm not nearly as carefree as I used to be, nor do I voice my opinions nearly as much. And I'm much more lethargic than I used to and I express far less emotion.

Most of all, I feel like I cannot trust people. I have not felt much of an emotional attatchment toward anyone or anything since before NWA. I'll make friends, but I don't "bond" with them the same way I did with people I met before the whole experience began.

Just thought I'd like to share my experience as a relatively recent CEDU graduate with everyone.

If anyone wants to get in touch with me my e-mail is [email protected]

Please, though, if you don't have anything good to say don't say it. Flames will be reported to my school and I will block your e-mail address. Otherwise, I'm happy to talk to anyone, particularly any other CEDU graduates that share some of my experience. "

I want you to know that there are a lot of people out here who really appreciate you speakiing honestly about your experience. You are not alone. CEDU's marks on me will never go away; they're scars and injuries of the worst kind. The saying "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger" doesn't even really hold in the context of this. Regardless, nobody ever needed to be strong to that degree of strength. You never asked for this, it was a kind of rape, of non-consensual forced intimacy, a cruel mindfuck the likes of which very few know for very few can concieve of something of this degree, and those that do are penultimately the ones who have experienced it firsthand and the least equipped to convey it to others in their damage. So again, I appreciate you speaking and there are many others who do as well. Congratulations on your matriculation, and may you remain in college until graduation. I wish you prosperity, and if necessitated, someone who will give you the care or love necessary to truly enjoy and appreciate your life.

To Woodbury personnel who approve new logins and passwords:

I stumbled across your web site recently. A few years ago, as the mother of a teenager who was having many conduct problems, I enrolledmy son in Rocky Mountain Academy (RMA) and the results were more than his father and I could ever have hoped for. He is now a student at the U of Minnesota, looking at graduate school opportunities, but more than that, he is a happy, aware individual who is connected with those around him. He just spent a college semester abroad in a program that the U of M contracts with in Amsterdam, and since he knew that I would, as a parent, be a little nervous about him being overseas and in that particular location, he set up a web site on which he posted multiple photos and information to keep us in touch with his actitivities and locations.

As a result of our family's experiences at RMA, not only has my son done well, but I was inspired to change my fown field of interest. I was a biologist and MBA ,and on the basis of my RMA interactions with Bill Valentine and with Mel Wasserman in the last Advanced Workshop that he gave at RMA, I entered the field of psychology. I was just granted my Masters' and am working on my Doctorate, and it is my hope to start a school of my own someday, keeping intact the ideas that Mel and his compatriates developed.

So, on this basis, I am very interested in your web site. I have submitted a registration and have been assigned a login (user) name and a password and am waiting to have approval, as I think that I can gain from hearing the concerns of other parents, as well as being able to contribute to the understanding of others on the basis of my own experience with an emotional growth boarding school.

I am the parent of a young man who graduated from RMA in 1999. Being kind of computer-inexperienced, I am not
sure if I can post this, but will try.

Our family's involvement with RMA was nothing but good, my son developed intoa loving, responsible person, and I have changed careers--from an economist to a person studying to become a psychologist--- on the basis of my experiences at the school. I, as a parent, attended the last workshop that Mel Wasserman conducted and for me it was really life-changing.

What shocks me is the "Hate CEDU" sites that I find on the internet--unbelievable to me that others have had such different experiences---are they wrong, dishonest, confused, I ask myself? I have no answer. But I would appreciate the comments of other parents who have had experiences with the CEDU schools, I cannot help but consider these institutions miraculous on the basis of my experience, but I would like to hear from others.

Just goes to show how proud these losers are of locking their kids up for the better part of their adolescence.

Oh, the "miracle" of salvation, behind the locked doors of an institutionalized-style program.

Ottawa, your drive-by posts are laughable. I feel sorry for your kid(s) and anyone who falls victim to your self-righteous crappola.

Move on ... you are taking up valuable bandwidth.

Warning signs of a destructive cult
Do you know someone in a destructive cult?
Warning signs!
Anyone could attack a group they disagree with by unfairly labeling it a destructive cult. How would you know whether it really were such a cult or not? Isn't there an objective method to evaluate groups for cultic tendencies? Yes. The following early warning signs can help you reasonably determine whether or not a group is likely to be a destructive cult, and if you should be concerned about a friend, coworker, or loved one being involved with it.

The main reason that the following destructive cult tactics are so damaging to both the individual and society is because they debilitate rationality and reduce empathy. Rationality and empathy are indispensable in making good personal and social decisions. History is littered with personal and social catastrophes where a lack of rationality and lack of empathy were its core causes.

Ask yourself if the following criteria apply to the group you are concerned about.
A destructive cult tends to be totalitarian in its control of its members' behavior. Cults are likely to dictate in great detail not only what members believe, but also what members wear and eat, when and where members work, sleep, and bathe, and how members think, speak, and conduct familial, marital, or sexual relationships.

A destructive cult tends to have an ethical double standard. Members are urged to be obedient to the cult, to carefully follow cult rules. They are also encouraged to be revealing and open in the group, confessing all to the leaders. On the other hand, outside the group they are encouraged to act unethically, manipulating outsiders or nonmembers, and either deceiving them or simply revealing very little about themselves or the group. In contrast to destructive cults, honorable groups teach members to abide by one set of ethics and act ethically and truthfully to all people in all situations.

A destructive cult has only two basic purposes: recruiting new members and fund-raising. Altruistic movements, established religions, and other honorable groups also recruit and raise funds. However, these actions are incidental to an honorable group's main purpose of improving the lives of its members and of humankind in general. Destructive cults may claim to make social contributions, but in actuality such claims are superficial and only serve as gestures or fronts for recruiting and fund-raising. A cult's real goal is to increase the prestige and often the wealth of the leader.

A destructive cult appears to be innovative and exclusive. The leader claims to be breaking with tradition, offering something novel, and instituting the ONLY viable system for change that will solve life's problems or the world's ills. But these claims are empty and only used to recruit members who are then surreptitiously subjected to mind control to inhibit their ability to examine the actual validity of the claims of the leader and the cult.

A destructive cult is authoritarian in its power structure. The leader is regarded as the supreme authority. He or she may delegate certain power to a few subordinates for the purpose of seeing that members adhere to the leader's wishes. There is no appeal outside his or her system to a greater system of justice. For example, if a schoolteacher feels unjustly treated by a principal, an appeal can be made to the superintendent. In a destructive cult, the leader claims to have the only and final ruling on all matters.

A destructive cult's leader is a self-appointed messianic person claiming to have a special mission in life. For example, leaders of flying saucer cults claim that beings from outer space have commissioned them to lead people away from Earth, so that only the leaders can save them from impending doom.

A destructive cult's leader centers the veneration of members upon himself or herself. Priests, rabbis, ministers, democratic leaders, and other leaders of genuinely altruistic movements focus the veneration of adherents on God or a set of ethical principles. Cult leaders, in contrast, keep the focus of love, devotion, and allegiance on themselves.

A destructive cult's leader tends to be determined, domineering, and charismatic. Such a leader effectively persuades followers to abandon or alter their families, friends, and careers to follow the cult. The leader then takes control over followers' possessions, money, time, and lives.

If you know someone who belongs to a group that demonstrates a significant number of these warning signs and you would like more information on how to deal with destructive cults or mind control, go to http://www.factnet.org.

Dysfunction Junction, THANK YOU for letting us know! You did some work here and it is beneficial to those who were wounded by her.

I am MOST concerned to see this. She had talked about it here. There is something very wrong with her, as she spent hours and hours posting in a site that clearly had wounded souls. She had no respect for their hurt, and engaged in juvenile conflicts with them. She hurled insults thinly veiled as intellectual discussion.

As time went by, and people became more angry with her, she escalated her baiting and taunting. I've never seen anything like this from an educated "adult."

Clearly, she was compounding injuries and did not at all recognize the harm she was doing. She commented frequently about how immature people in these posts were - while she was completely lost in conflict with the posters.

This is a particularly insidious form of emotional abuse. She confused some of the posters who were not able to recognize what she was doing. Some became enraged with her - precisely what she was looking for - and then she would slam them for being upset. But SHE had created this! She took on a smug and superior air, further infuriating these people. She did not recognize that some of the rage that she stimulated had been created by CEDU experiences.

She bragged often about being a psychology graduate student - I have no way of knowing if this is true. She had an excellent facility for language - making it all the more difficult for some of our posters to handle her. She would turn anything she wished around, twisting the meaning, and pouncing on the person, pointing out what they said. This was particularly infuriating because she never accurately represented what had been said.

She would ask others questions, and if they did not answer, she attacked. However, she was challenged SEVERAL times to print out all of her posts and present them to her advisor. She never ONCE answered or responded to these challenges. Not one word. The better psychology schools require extensive therapy for each student. Also, behaviors such as hers would be of grave concern to an advisor. Although she claimed to spend ?very little time? in the posts, she produced vast volumes ? by some magic, I suppose.

I am an advisor for doctoral students. If my student presented something like this to me, I would report her to academic affairs and recommend a full psychological evaluation and therapy before she would be allowed to continue in the school. It is possible that a person such as Annie from Minnesota (interesting ? she told us she was in Ottawa, Canada) would be expelled from the university where I am a professor. It happens. These people lose all their tuition money. First and foremost, a psychologist must be mentally healthy. She clearly is not. It is the student?s responsibility to be mentally healthy and fit ? and to rectify it, if possible, if s/he is not fit.

She eventually made threats to posters, prompting me to delete many of my posts. I had been in private practice at CEDU briefly ? it was a very sick place. She then posted that she had printed out my posts, clearly threatening me, and closed with ?have a nice day!? This person is very immature and enjoys power struggles. I think she?s perfect for opening a CEDUesque kind of place.

Keep us posted as to her progress, okay?
