Deborah:
My thoughts exactly.
The mother even knew he had dyslexia. Why has she ignored his needs and allowed the situation to escalate to the point that he became violent with his brother for teasing him? How is a kid to feel when his own family members ridicule him for a bonefided learning disability?

And how about the school district? They're on the brink of screening every school age child for mental illness and they can't even identify and assist a kid with dyslexia? Isn't that damned comforting? WHY is he getting F's and being punished for it?

If he were screened there would be a great liklihood that he'd be put on psych meds for the 'behavioral' issues stemming from humiliation he's endured for years, totally ignoring the dyslexia. Absolute insanity.

That this is happening in 2005 in the wealthiest country on the planet is unbelievable. Why is there no shame for the total lack of attention to children's needs? It's embarrassing.

Antigen:
Boy, nothing better for a kid who's breaking under the stress of constant teasing than to cause him to break down in front of a group of peers and a tv crew.

This is not quite as sick as watching Waco burn, but it's damned close.

This would be the best of all possible worlds, if there were no religion in it.

Ginger, I could not agree with you more.

Watching the betrayal of America's youth on primetime tv is absolutely sickening.

Disney/ABC has no business profiting from the troubled-parent business.

This is obscene.

Barbe - BratCamp is just another symptom of the real illness thats starting to fester and putrify the minds of everyone in this nation. Me and my stepdad were talking the other day, and he said that if someone resurrected gladitorial combat in the Colliseum and telecasted it, the ratings would be huge and basically everyone would watch it.

Bratcamp is evidence of that. They see children being pushed to the brink, and then some, all the 'therapy' and bullshit that the incredibly yawn-inspiring 'narrator' spews out is just gobbled up without even the vestiges of critical thought being exercised when they form their opinions about how 'good' it all is. Like I talked about in my thread "group consequences and other bullshit", when told they're tortured and starved, the usual gruff/smug reply of "an adult" is to say "that just shows them how good they had it at home".

What a lovely mentality! Your children are Chattel and OWE YOU! They're little ingrates, nevermind whats really going on! Nevermind that its torture with a P.C. spin thrown on top, its wonderful entertainment, seeing people squirm cry and have a total breakdown on TV, sobbing about someones dead father and trying to "find the strength to get through this" or being pushed to tears by being pressured to rappel down a cliff "for their self esteem" (yeah right).

So, not only is the usual sadistic nerve stimulated and then some, as is the typical case with "Tough Love", but everyone is being lead to believe this is "good", this is "growth" and its something they should go into willingly and submissively and damn them for resisting. Damn someone for wanting the ability to feed himeslf on that cheap, low-caloric density bland and not terribly appropriate for hiking long distances carrying a heavy pack in the cold desert and sleeping in the cold desert (protein and fat would go a LONG way...), and damn him for getting angry about it and the "group consequences". Damn that boy! Oh, wait, he didnt say fuck twice and smash a rock through their heads. I would have, but then again Im an "adult" and I know whats going on for what it is, not a perturbative'general idea' that is forming in their heads: Conform, do as told, show "respect" (submission) and put on a show with the breakdowns and divuldging personal juicy tidbits, and just deal with the humiliation.

What a joke! The whole point in the end is to push them into breakdowns, and they are rewarded for... breaking down, giving in, being vulnerable, disclosing all their personal shit (to the whole fucking COUNTRY) and having those psychological regressions - and they even ADMIT openly that the point is to make them "open to suggestions".

The REALLY disturbing fact in all of this is that so few people realize that its nothing but sensitivty training in the middle of nowhere... isntead of being stuck inside something, youre stuck out there with a few assholes and trapped all the same. And that people dont realize sensitivity training is just breaking someone to make them admit everything and brainwash them. (Too bad people seem to think brainwashing involves drugs or jedi mind tricks, because its on TV right now and they're party to it).

This really is disgusting and obscene... in the sene that its graphic entertainment of unconsenting children being tormented in every way except being physically assaulted, as far as we know at least. But oh well, our wonderful politicians are more conerned with anonymous and harmless gay couples, sex in a violent videogame that children have no business playing (though I must admit I find GTA games a fun fantasy to induldge in, however they seem to think these games make people violent... despite the STEADY DECLINE OF CRIME BY CHILDREN AND TEENS!) and boobies on TV or bad words... and dont even get me started on that guy that Jon Stewart (bless the Daily Show!) ripped a new asshole over that book about people ruining america 'culturally' while we ignore the deeper issues with governments influence on our society... such as regressional "treatment" and the accompanying brainwashing, on our damn CHILDREN!

Yeah, just as an aside. That was Rick Santorum, btw, Senator from PA. I was a little dissapointed in Jon, though. Toward the end of that interview, he sais something to the effect that ending segregation (for example) is more important than our culture. Isn't that part of our culture? Isn't that a much more important part of our culture than which specific words we deem to be taboo or who's butting their what consensually into whom?

Same for Brat Camp. Deb posted a link the other day from a homeless rights lawyer who characterized it as crazy hippies holding kids prisoner. That's pretty accurate. And I think it's many orders of magnitude more obscene than, say, the kid who's crime seems to be insisting on defending himself from the dumb jocks at school.
