CWLA President/CEO Message to Congress
« on: August 12, 2005, 05:09:00 PM »
Now this is a start - I know a lot of you or most of you rather would like to see all programs closed.  It is not going to happen if at all any time soon, it makes sense to support initiatives that will keep kids safe, and close the bad programs.

Dear CWLA Members,

We at the Child Welfare League of America have serious concerns about the
growing number of unlicensed residential programs and camps for troubled
children and youth, often referred to as therapeutic boarding schools or boot
camps. Recent publicity, i.e. the current "Brat Camp" television show, has
highlighted the use of these types of programs.

Since the airing of this show, CWLA has received an increasing number of calls
from concerned parents across the country, who fear for the safety of the young
people served by these programs, or who recount inappropriate or unsafe
incidents that their children have experienced.

We believe that Congress needs to take action to ensure the safety of the
children participating in these programs by requesting that the U.S. Government
Accountability Office conduct an investigation.

In a letter to key members of Congress, which will later be sent to all members
of Congress, we refer them to CWLA's Standards of Excellence for Residential
Services to detail best practice guidelines for the residential program services
that are provided to children and youth, often used by state agencies in
developing and revising licensing regulations.

Please use the link that follows to review the letter that I sent to Congress
today regarding this important issue.

Thank you for your continued advocacy on behalf of children, youth and families.

Hello,

Instead of trying to find fault in the Leagues good intentions, for me I am going to support this effort.  1.  The League has a lot of power and influence in this Country when it comes to Children and Adolescents, they have been around for years and are respected and listened to.
2.  This will help to stop the terrible actions or things being done by the "Troubled or Struggling Teen Industry including Transporters."

I have learned through various efforts it is best to jump on a train already moving where people are paying attention, then to go off and try to be on a tangent on my own.  In the end what we all want is for kids to be safe and healthy.

I am with you also, somehow I believe that what you are saying is true - and we all have to start somewhere.  I am f in pissed of at the industry but this is not the way to change it it is just keeping me angry.  So I am on board as well.  Wonder how long before ST will post the notice on their board, ROFLMAO if anyone thinks they will.

I also agree that working with the League has a lot of good things that can come out of it, so I am on board.  I have always said one step at a time, these people have the ear of Congress, the Press, and believe me unscrupulous providers, Ed Consultants, and Transports cannot buy their way out of this one - the League has the verasity and the longevity.

I am back on this!  Working with these people as they have the clout to make change and more lobby and verasity than the industry.  Actually I never left this cause.

What are "CWLA's Standards of Excellence for Residential
Services"? I don't see them in the link above.
