Torture of Prisoners in Arizona
« on: June 29, 2005, 02:43:00 PM »
This was just sent to me by someone who thinks this kind of treatment is great for prisoners in this country... READ ON..

TO THOSE OF YOU NOT FAMILIAR WITH JOE ARPAIO
HE IS THE MARICOPA ARIZONA COUNTY SHERIFF
AND HE KEEPS GETTING ELECTED OVER AND OVER.

THIS IS ONE OF THE REASONS WHY:

Sheriff Joe Arpaio (in Arizona) who created the "tent city jail": :skull:  :skull:

He has jail meals down to 40 cents a serving and charges the inmates for them.

He stopped smoking and porno magazines in the jails. Took away their weights. Cut off all but "G" movies.

He started chain gangs so the inmates could do free work on county and city projects.

Then he started chain gangs for women so he wouldn't get sued for discrimination.

He took away cable TV until he found out there was a federal court order that required cable TV for jails. So he hooked up the cable TV again only let in the Disney channel and the weather channel.

When asked why the weather channel he replied, so they will know how hot it's gonna be while they are working on my chain gangs.

He cut off coffee since it has zero nutritional value.

When the inmates complained, he told them, "This isn't the Ritz/Carlton. If you don't like it, don't come back."

More on the Arizona Sheriff:

With temperatures being even hotter than usual in Phoenix (116 degrees just set a new record), the Associated Press reports: About 2,000 inmates living in a b! arbed-wi re-surrounded tent encampment at the Maricopa County Jail have been given permission to strip down to their government-issued pink boxer shorts.

On Wednesday, hundreds of men wearing boxers were either curled up on their bunk beds or chatted in the tents, which reached 138 degrees inside the week before.

Many were also swathed in wet, pink towels as sweat collected on their chests and dripped down to their pink socks.

"It feels like we are in a furnace," said James Zanzot, an inmate who has lived in the tents for 1 year. "It's inhumane."

Joe Arpaio, the tough-guy sheriff who created the tent city and long ago started making his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna sandwiches, is not one bit sympathetic He said Wednesday that he told all of the inmates: "It's 120 degrees in Iraq and our soldiers are living in tents too, and they have to wear full battle gear, but they didn't commit any crimes, so shut your damned mouths!"

Way to go, Sheriff! Maybe if all prisons were like this one there would be a lot less crime and/or repeat offenders. Criminals should be punished for their crimes - not live in luxury until it's time for their parole, only to go out and commit another crime so they can get back in to live on taxpayers money and enjoy things taxpayers can't afford to have for themselves.

Sheriff Joe was just reelected Sheriff in Maricopa County, Arizona.

This is the first I've heard of him - he needs to be stopped. Truth be known anyone could end up in his tents.

It's this punishment approach that causes the rise in recidivism. People don't become criminals just becasue they feel like it-- there are underlying issues and problems that have to be dealth with. I agree that prisoners should pay their debt to society in some way-- but Arpaio's methods are outrageous and he should not be allowed to go on with this.

People like Arpaio often justify their actions by saying it will serve as a "deterrent". But if that claim had any truth in it, his jail would have been out of operation years ago.

Abuse of prisoners isn't unique to Arizona, unfortunately. This "get tough" approach is everywhere.

If no one has died yet - someone will. Apparently this type of prisoner abuse is as American as Apple Pie - because nothing is being done to stop it. It's uncivilized. Surely one must realize that a percentage of all prisoners are innocent - many more are there as a result of their drug addictions (ie possession of their poison) They aren't all violent offenders.

Fear believes--courage doubts. Fear falls up the earth and prays--- courage stands erect and thinks. Fear is barbarism---courage is civilization. Fear believes in witchcraft, devils and ghosts. Fear is religion, courage is science.

Taking all cable tv except the weather channel and disney out of prison is not terrible treatment.

Living outside in 137 degree head is.

The other stuff ranges along the way.  For instances, whether the bologna sandwiches are cruel and unusual depends on the length of stay.

This is one reason we have courts---to arbitrate what does and doesn't constitute "cruel and unusual" punishment.

Those cases frequently do get to court, and I would be surprised if some of them aren't already on their way through the courts.  The portions of it that are inhumane are already on their way to being dealt with, and nothing we can do can speed that up.

As far as the voters re-electing him, democracy in action doesn't always get us decisions we agree with---which is why we have state and federal Constitutions and courts.

Since it's a county jail, you can really only wind up in his jails if you go to Maricopa County, Arizona.  So to say "anyone" could wind up in his jails is an exaggeration.

I'm not defending the lack of air conditioning in the heat, and I certainly think the chain gangs should be indoors if the temperature goes over a certain limit.  I also think inmates deserve a full physical from a real doctor to determine whether manual labor or heat is dangerous for them.

These are adults who received at least something resembling Due Process of Law.

They have defined sentences, and they have certain rights to communicate with the outside world, and they have the right to an attorney who can represent their interests when/if they are treated dangerously or cruelly.  If an attorney wants to work pro bono on the case, or an interest group or extended family member wants to fund an attorney, nobody can keep the inmate from getting the services of that attorney.

If I could get all those safeguards for minors, I would be one ecstatic woman.

I'm not jumping up and down praising Arpaio.  I'm not condoning him violating inmates civil rights by endangering their health.

But I am picking my priorities on what to have a cow about.

The public defender system in this country--it's inadequacies and the injustices that flow from that--*is* one of my other hot buttons.

But not as hot a button as these children being mistreated with no meaningful safeguards, and no enforceable standards, and no due process at all.

My philosophy: Fix the "next greatest need" and the rest of the world will follow.

I've seen stuff about this guy on TV before. He is totally full of himself. He has some strange nostalgic view of how a 'good ol' prison should be run. That type of guy...

Just don't do anything in Maricopa County that would get you arrested.  Everyone knows the consequences, so if they're stupid enough to do it and/or get caught - they deserve it.  It's not abuse if you made the choice to be arrested and know about the chain gangs, which everyone does.

I've voted for him many times.  Whaaa, Whaa. Don't live in Phoenix if you don't like the heat this time of year, period.

People who are even ACCUSED of a crime get held in the jail, Dolphin.

Violating rights, and the kind of shady shit he does behind the scenes arnet exactly good, either.

I guess ANYTHING is okay to be done if youre told by an authority figure its a "consequence" and you "made the choice" to do it and be punished for it.

Youre taking this parental reality of ABSOLUTE AUTHORITY and SUBMISSIVE CHILD-LIKE CITIZENRY that you must have gotten from gilcrease and his bullshit seminars, a dominating parent/submissive child duality that apparently is necessary for a program family (and in your twisted mind, civilization itself) and applying it to everyone.

Well, guess what, I wouldnt be caught dead in Maricopa County, hell if Id want a DIME of anything I paid there going to taxes to that asshole, and the "consequences" (isn't it time for a new buzzword? Better toss Quantum this and Ontological that all over it to make it sound good  for idiots like you!) that mr asshole who wants to be the dealer-out of suffering and humiliation to adults be helped with my money.

Im damn sure you do vote for him, he plays right into your mentality. I just hope for your sake you dont get sucked into jail for some reason or another (even being accused gets you arrested, dolphin) or if TROLLING Becomes a criminal offence , or you get drug in for being a brainwashed programmie bitch whose as hypocritical as they come.

BTW, I still have kinky sex with my Girlfriend. BETTER CALL GILCREASE!

I hold it to be the inalienable right of anybody to go to hell in his own way.

Of course you did. This man is just as twisted as WWASP, he's spouting the same illogical, dealy, ideology, and you're twisted enough to buy into all their bullshit.

You're a sad, pathetic person.

No, worse, a troll!

The Christian God can be easily pictured as virtually the same as the many ancient gods of past civilizations. The Christian god is a three headed monster; cruel, evil and capricious. If one wishes to know more of this raging, three headed, beast-like god, one only needs to look at the caliber of the people who say they serve him. The are always of two classes: fools and hypocrites.

My family had the interesting pleasure, if you can call it that, of meeting this slimebag.

My father was helping a British couple, the Montfords, ride their bike about America to raise money for Leukemia research.  It was a big publicity thing whereever they went, as they rode a tandem bike and the wife had survived multiple bouts with the disease.  Well, in Arizona, they stopped at the famed Tent City.

Joe was all smiles, playing the politician game of baby kissing and smoozing about, introducting the couple to his cohorts.  When introduced to my father, Joe looked at him condecendingly and asked, "what do YOU do?" and my father responded that he and my mother were just helping this couple acrost the South West portion of their journey.  Joe, obviously not impressed, smirked and walked off.

About 20 minutes latter, he came back again, all smiles and handshakes, offering food and water to my parents.

The Montfords told Joe that my father is a Superior Court Judge in California, and boy, did that change EVERYTHING.  My father found it so distasteful that my family, myself included, left.

A little insight into the filth's character for ya.

I voted for him too.  Several times as well.  In fact, the majority of the county voted for him, over and over again and with some pretty stiff competition.

He's tough and I have no apologies.  One thing for sure, he's not a co-dependent enabler!
