House Votes to Limit Patriot Act Rules
« on: June 16, 2005, 12:29:00 AM »
WASHINGTON Jun 15, 2005 ? In a slap at President Bush, lawmakers voted Wednesday to block the Justice Department and the FBI from using the Patriot Act to peek at library records and bookstore sales slips.

The House voted 238-187 despite a veto threat from Bush to block the part of the anti-terrorism law that allows the government to investigate the reading habits of terror suspects.

You're so confusing sometimes.

The function of the press is very high. It is almost holy. It ought to
serve as a forum for the people, through which the people may know freely what is going on. To misstate or suppress the news is a breach of trust.

I've never been a lefty. But you always call me one whenever I gripe about government excess.

So let me get this straight; you're OK w/ cops tazering a guy repeatedly to get a piss sample. You're ok w/ them shooting unarmed suspects. But you have a problem w/ them snooping your library and book store records?

Is it that you can't imagine you'll ever be a suspect?

Under the benign influence of our republican institutions, and the maintenance of peace with all nations whilst so many of them were engaged in bloody and wasteful wars, the fruits of a just policy were enjoyed in an unrivaled growth of our faculties and resources.
