Obviously, the thought/behavior reform programs are still perceived as positive alternatives to difficult situations.  Aparently no one cares if the "problem" that is being challenged is actually a problem for internee. As with all things difficult - isn't it easier to demand change from  the other person rather than change ourselves?

With respect to programming designed to change sexual orientation... whether that kind of programming is an acceptable alternative to being openly and contentedly gay depends in great part on one's opinion about homosexualtiy: is it a natual expresion of biology or is it a matter of moral corruption that can be fixed - like drug addiction.

If the general belief in the theraputic community is that addiction is a physical/biological problem expressed by moral failings, then I guess the programmers can justify reprogramming of sexual orientation.  Especially when it's carried out in the name of god. "When others demand that we become the people they want us to be, they force us to destroy the person we really are. It's a subtle kind of murder. The most loving parents and relatives commit this murder with smiles on their faces."

How very true.  And the parents who are doing this now are OUR peers  - buying into this crap just like our folks did.
