If you would have justice in this world, then begin to see that a human being is not a means to some end.  People are not commodities.  When human beings are just to one another government becomes obsolete and real freedom is born; SPIRITUAL ANARCHY.

it is not an X reference, the story came way before them. although they often appropriate the myths of other cultures, it doesn't make the original myth X-tian.

i am not knowledgeable on the subject but i found a couple of interesting links:

It isn't a christian reference. It's old testament.  The Rastafarian religion is based on the old testament.  The old testament prophecizes that a messiah will come from the line of David.  To Christians that Messiah is Jesus but the Rastas only consider Jesus to be a prophet, not the Messiah.  Their Messiah is Haile Selassie 1 (1892-1975), the last emperor of Ethiopia.  Haile Selassie traces his lineage back to the Queen of Sheeba, who was one of Solomons' many wives.  Since Solomon is the son of David, Haile Selassie  can fulfill the prophecy.  It's really a jewish reference.  In a way the Rastas' are a sect of Judaism.

Anon above is right. You think a bunch of potheads would find something more worthwhile and less violent to base their belief system on.

I believe this quote was from Tuna, the debate coach at UVM, who is an old bearded fat debate geek who also runs an all night reggae radio show and is an undercover white rasta.

this is a better link. kinda puts Bob Marley and what he says in context with Jamaican history and Rastafarianism.

http://http://www.socialistreview.org.uk/article.php?articlenumber=9193

as much as i despise the panty-hosed clan of evil Church-goers...

...The Bible is a book of stories, no more, no less. Religions and individuals put different meanings on it.

so was Bob Marley speaking as a religion-practicing person when he referenced the story of Daniel in the Lion's Den, or was he speaking as a person who had read a story and found some allegorical or metaphorical (whatever) meaning in it that he wanted to get across?

does that make sense? i hope that makes sense. i really don't know anything about Rastafarianism. i guess i'm just wondering if anyone can ever reference a Bible story without being accused of using a bad source. i think if i ever read it in the future -- and i don't even want a bible in the house because it would remind me too much of the Church and Sunday School b.s. -- i would be interested in reading it more as a cultural history. what were people's myths, their codes of conduct, how did they live and treat each other, that kind of thing.

but Christianity i feel as oppression. so now i understand.

yeah, and "The Lord is My Shepherd..."   that would make me a sheep. i reject that. i reject the lies. i was subjugated to enough X-tian bullshit about God's love, my parents' love, and other crap, in and after Straight! what is this? what the fuck kind of religion lets parents lock their children away to have their minds destroyed?

Rastafarianism, Christianity and Islam all spring from the old testament.  Judaism is heavily influenced by the ancient religion of Egypt.

That's the whole point of religion, to destroy the mind...or at least critical thinking.

i agree with you except that i don' think it's religion itself that destroys critical thinkin' or the mind.  It's the institution which the religion has become.  They symbols of religion themselves are only tools, like a hammer, or a drug and in and of themselves are neither good nor bad.  tools and symbols have only the values which we as individuals attach to them.  A hammer can be used to kill or it can be used to shelter and nuture.  Symbols are the same way.  Take the religious symbols out of their institutional context and a whole new understanding presents itself.
