what about the REAL ID or whatever they are calling it, the national id card? Antigen was talking about it. i found some links but i can't sort out what's quality and recent from the rest.

Not at all insignificant that Tony Blair is pushing essentially the same thing in Britain.

As I understand the US proposal, it takes the authority to decide what is and is not valid, legal ID and how one can acquire it away from the states and gives it to the Federal government. States that fail to comply w/ whatever the gang of 500 or it's delegates deman lost highway funding.

There's some talk in PA of countering w/ a state imposed fee on out of state commercial road traffic. Dunno if that will go anywhere or not. And it wouldn't work for every state. PA just has the luck to stand between yunz in New England and the rest of the country.
