More photos of group???
« on: November 17, 2002, 02:34:00 PM »
Now I have seen only 2 photos of group sessions. One was in National Geographic and the other at www.thestraights .com (although enhanced and altered from the original negative by the placement of a Chinese flag, funny I dont remember the Chinese flag in my program)These photo show "motivation session" taking place DURING GROUP.I dont remember ANY PHOTOS being taken during the program. Are there any other photos of group sessions???These photos are very powerful images to TEACH OTHERS what it was like to be there. My question is:Are there any other (un altered)photos of Group session or parking lot activities?(I want to use them to teach others.)
PS:I take issue with people altering EVIDENCE from program. This CHINESE FLAG rubs me wrong. I try to "TEACH" about Straight and these "altered Chinese Flag photo" at the FAGER website just confuses people. There is a good photo of Group Session to use as a TEACHING TOOL but for the political views of the Fagers.I UNDERSTAND the similarities of Chinese thought reform schools and our beloved program, but this is not conveyed through this RARE photo of a LIVE GROUP SESSION.The photo SEEMS to be "anti-china" even though this is not the case. What is more powerful than a PHOTOGRAPH of live session???Maybe a sound recording or a videotape.I have seen but 2 photos available through public forum and only ONE on the web,too bad I cant use it without explaining the Chinese Flag bit.Just another stumbling block on the way to teaching people about the TRUTH.

I agree with your point about the photo.  Write wes an email and ask for a copy of the original without the flag.  It was a powerful pic for me to see as well, and I also scratched my head about the chicommie flag...

If Wes hasn't got an unaltered copy of the image, send the one as it appears to me.  Provided nobody has a copyright beef with my doing so, I'd be happy to retouch it, no prob.

The National Geographic photo is quite shocking! Its a full on front color view of session of motivation. There are beltlooping photos in that issue also.
What about OTHER photos?
Was the Fager photo taken by the media or is it from a personal collection?
There must have been news cameras in a group or open meeting at some time or another.News papers could have taken photos.Did staff ever take photos of group?
Believe it or not, even though "motivating" was a constant part of being in program, those pictures bring back vivid memories of the mechanics of the group and how it worked.
Any evidence of these places belongs to ALL of us and should be treated just like the relics at a Concentration Camp Museum.

Life 82, Did you see the eBay link I posted yesterday in another thread?  There were a few copies of that Nat'l Geo issue for sale/at auction cheap.

Not personal collection; that's scanned newsprint, for sure.  There's also a slug beneath it:  Straight-Springfield, July 1987. Photo by Michele McDonald, Norfolk Ledger-Star. Flags added by ed.

Well... That isn't so, _so_ old and there's plenty of info to research against.  I'd just about bet the original article is in an archives somewhere.  Norfolk, VA, public library main branch?

From what I understand there are 2 video tapes of springfield out there somewhere. One was when Nancy Regan and Princess Di Were there.  Not that it would represent what really happened there. I am not sure what is on the other one but from what I   gather it was  taken in my time 85-86. I would love to see them if anyone has a copy.

Whoa, that's quite a link there...but that will take you to the photo provided you are logged into the straight_alumni site at yahoo. I wouldn't worry about any copyright issues, you would only be sending (and not selling) it to someone...Also, could you post the links to the Nat. Geo. photos again? I, too would like to see these...
Thanks, Alex

Heya AlexL,

Unfortunately, I haven't found any other scans from the Nat'l Geographic article you guys want, nor a transcript of it.  Google had a few matches when I searched there; mostly back issues that are for sale in some shops.  eBay also has a couple currently at auction, here:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 1585358623

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 1584323120

Good thinking, but can't get to the image at the Y! Group; I'm not a Straight Alumni, and wouldn't want to invade their space over there.    If it's the same as what's on Wes' site, I can grab it from that.

Stumbled onto a lukewarm lead for Michele McDonald, the freelancer who worked at the Norfolk Ledger-Star in '87, and took the photo in question.  Apparently, she "done good" for herself; a Pulitzer finalist a few years ago, yadda yadda.  Very cool.  Anyway, she has a site, but it's about a year outdated:  http://www.michelemcdonald.com/main.html

Edited to add:
P.S.  What was originally on the wall where the US and Chinese flags now are in that image?

The Cincinnati Enquirer ran a five day segment on the Cincinnati straight and there was a picture of the group from the back.  Dave Momper and Suzanne Gore were the Staff leading the rap.
