Adolescents
present unique problems when being treated for drug and alcohol abuse. That was
the consensus among participants at a seminar conducted at Holy Name Hospital in
Teaneck. Several of the nation's experts on adolescent drug treatment were on
hand.
"All kids in this country are growing up in a
society that seeks instant chemical relief," said Martha Morrison, MD,
a director at the Ridgeview Institute in Smyrna, Ga.
Miller Newton, PhD, president and clinical director
of the Hackensack based organization, KIDS of Bergen County, also took part.
Participants said that teen-agers are subject to
peer pressure. The young people also are more closely tied to family problems
and less able to understand standard self-help concepts.
All of the treatment programs discussed at the
seminar incorporate some form of the methods used by Alcoholics Anonymous and
Narcotics Anonymous. As part of the recovery process, the addict is encouraged
to call on a "higher power," whether that be the power of love or God.
Videotapes, audiotapes, and a monograph of the
seminar are available. For information, call KIDS of Bergen County at 487-4100.
College students are getting first-hand experience
in the pediatrics field. Four area residents are taking part in the Summer
Scholars Program at Hackensack Medical Center's Institute for Child Development.
The program includes direct clinical observation of
a variety of developmental and behavioral problems, including mental
retardation, genetic disorders, and learning disabilities.
The students will write papers about what they've
learned, and they will be graded on their performance. Most are receiving
college credit for their work at the hospital.
Taking part are Jeffrey Gudin of Bardonia, N.Y., a student at Fairleigh
Dickinson University in Teaneck; Michelle Hozer of Fort Lee, who attends
Fairfield (Conn.) University; Michael Szwerc, a Mahwah student attending
Washington University in St. Louis, Mo.; and Deborah Young of Englewood Cliffs,
who attends Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
Glenn Wahlgren, a graduate of Ridgefield Memorial
High School, has received a doctor of astronomy degree from Ohio State
University. He plans to work at the Space Telescope Science Institute in
Baltimore.
Susan Tiffany of Leonia has been named
to the Trinity College faculty honors list. The 1984 Leonia High School graduate
is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Tiffany.
Patricia LaCarrubba is participating in the Boston University Summer Theatre
Institute's Teachers of Theatre Program on a fellowship from the National
Endowment for the Arts. The North Bergen resident is a coordinator of the Hudson
County Teen-Arts Center.
Dawn Taffaro, a North
Bergen student attending Kutztown (Pa.) University, has been selected to
participate in an exchange program at the Buckinghamshire College of Higher
Education in England.
The daughter of Joseph and
Joanne Taffaro, she is a 1984 graduate of St. Cecilia High School in Englewood.
Scott Anagnoste, a Cliffside Park student who
recently was graduated from the Dwight-Englewood School in Englewood, has won a
National Merit Scholarship.
The honor student plans
to attend Princeton University in the fall. He is the son of Berta and Sorin
Anagnoste.
