Getting real close.
I had a friend the other day challenge me on a simular statement I made. He started going on about some repressive tin pot potentate somewhere in Latin America or some such.
Initially I almost thought he had me but i pointed out that it is complaceny in the face of minor infractions of human rights that ultimately allows even larger ones to occur un challenged. The stupid Germans of 1935 did not think they were living in a police state. I don't think it occurred to most of them until the war was going against them.
So are we as Americans as fucking stupid as the Gemans of the thirties? Well, not all of us. There are plenty of them though. They elected George Bush. It is up to the rest of us to make as much noise as we possibly can.
