The Troubled Teen Industry / Yellowstone Boys and Girls Ranch ... So Done
« on: November 30, 2007, 04:45:59 PM »
Thank you for your wise guidance and insight. Your recommended steps are truly helpful ways I can get into action. I already have an experienced lawyer involved and she will be taking a very aggressive stance given the blatant child abuse that occurred during the last placement. Pro-actively initiating home schooling seems like a very smart choice. I find this entire state of affairs astounding and spiraling out of control. The saddest part is that this seems to be much more an issue of power than concern for the welfare of my child.

When I took my son to see his psychiatrist yesterday, we discussed the entire situation in depth. The terrible experiences he had at Yellowstone, the ways that he is coping with returning home and the pain of a reality in which his school district is trying to send him to another (even scarier) RTC. At least he knows that I am unwavering in my commitment to keep him safe here at home. Again, thank you for being so supportive.

This morning, I was served papers with notice of a scheduled due process hearing. Our school district and county health care agency are appealing to the State of California to enforce my son’s placement at Devereux-Cleo Wallace without parental consent. This is all new for me, but I am stunned at how overwhelmingly abrupt the petition was set forth. Basically, it was “we know what this child needs, the parent is misguided and irresponsible for disagreeing with us, give us the authority to place the child regardless of what the parent thinks is best.â€

I think home schooling is my only option. As a special education student, my son’s cumulative file is vast and will follow him to every school. He has been turned down by several private schools because of the negative reports and publicity surrounding him. As far as where I live, I am in Orange County, CA. There aren’t very many quality options nearby.

What kind of pictures are you looking for? Pictures of my son's face or throat with the bruises? No way!

I am sure they are worried that I will litigate against them. At the last IEP meeting all of the agencies had their attorneys out in force. Especially since they were faced with the all of the publicity about the abuse allegations and YBGR’s attempted cover-up. I feel that the School District should have been much more conscientious and thorough. Instead they seemed more aligned with the RTC, viewing my son as the problem. There seems to be no accountability for these kinds of places simply because their victims are kids in treatment. Any claims of abuse are immediately discounted and given little or no credibility because the source is devalued. In spite of all of the physical evidence, my son’s letter to his attorney was considered a lie and a manipulation.

I may file suit, but my true aim is to obtain a quality education in a supportive environment for my son. He just wants to go back to school with his friends.

The Troubled Teen Industry / Update
« on: November 29, 2007, 02:47:09 AM »
Wow! It is hard to believe that two weeks have passed since I brought my son home from YBGR. Life has been unrelenting. My son seems surprisingly ok (so far)… obviously, he is very happy to be back safe at home. When we arrived back in California, I took him to be examined by his pediatrician, who was shocked by the substantial head trauma and bruising on my son’s body. The doctor was very concerned about concussion and internal injuries. He referred us to several other specialists for further tests. Fortunately, none of the injuries caused permanent damage. Tomorrow my son is going back to his psychiatrist to continue sorting out the various medications he was prescribed.

Another complication, I am facing serious legal repercussions from our school district for removing my son from the placement. The district has filed for a hearing in court and is attempting to send my son to Devereux-Cleo Wallace in Colorado. I said no way in hell is my son going to a place where three kids have already died. As a special education student and the result of being disruptive and disrespectful during 8th grade, my son cannot attend his high school until he has been “successfulâ€

I'll have to wait until I get home before I can up load pictures. He was placed at YBGR because of his school district and the County Health Services.

Okay, I’m brand new here. I was looking for some insight concerning my child. Clearly, I wasn’t prepared for the onslaught of vicious responses to my posting. One question, how is this forum supposed to be effectual if you attack and alienate anyone who posts? There seems to be a modest number of “regularsâ€

I would probably portray myself as somewhere between insane and under-informed. I have received tons of beneficial feedback here. Some of it was blatantly hostile, some of it valiantly insightful, the best of it came via PM. It has helped me in making a decision to bring my son home as soon as possible. My main concern is to keep him alive and safe, which is impossible in a volatile environment that can and does escalate at any given moment. My son’s defiant disposition and the fact that he blew the whistle on staff abuses make him a likely target for retribution. I’m not certain what my next step will be, but I will feel better with him away from YBGR.

The Troubled Teen Industry / Reality Test

OK, since you guys are truly the experts here. Please tell me what your course of action would be if you had a child with a serious mental illness who was prone to violent and dangerous episodes. He was no longer accepted at the public school and was a danger to himself and others. How would you help him? Would you just welcome him back home and love him a little better? Just be a better mother? Is that your solution? Seriously. I would love a credible response.

You guys are so mean-spirited. I am an actual parent and all of this is my actual reality.   If it sounds as if I am very familiar with this “industryâ€
