One aspect of Straight was that it seemed to down-play intellectual development. We all know anyone who thought too much was put down for their troubles. God knows what would happen if people were to think for themselves. I sometimes wonder what the highly skilled staffers / graduates have done with their honed abilities. I know a few people went on to college as I ran into them. No ... not with my car, but that would have been somewhat interesting. I think Straight might have taught some people to read others well ... to this end, I think Carl Palumbo is selling used cars in PA. Did the evil staffers go on to sell insurance or become staffers in the Bush administration. I guess I'm a believer in Karma. I just have to believe that 'what-goes-around-comes-around'. At the same time, I know that such a viewpoint is really idealistic bullshit. I remember one group where my old comer John Holsberg was talking about himself in the future ... it was your typical being a doctor, having a big yacht, and other aspects of Western materialism. It was drilled into you that Straight was this magic country-club whereby membership has its advantages. I doubt many people place it on their resume. I somehow doubt John became a doctor. At the same time, Straight was by no means an accurate slice of America. People in the program came from more affluent than average familities and 99% white (I recall one black guy named Todd). Given that background, you'd think people would have done well with their lives. Of course it could be everyone doing well just isn't bothering to post to this site because they're too happy getting on this their lives.
