I wonder if that dude is still living in outta his car by the warehouse. I used to reflect on how lucky he was to be free as we would pull into the parking lot for yet another long day.

Straight, Inc. and Derivatives / Springfield 87-89 Question
« on: September 03, 2005, 08:41:00 AM »
Yep, I was there. I remember how amazing it was to actually be able to cross the street and get a simple cheeseburger after toiling in the warehouse for an eternity....

Straight, Inc. and Derivatives / asking for items.. the Straight way
« on: April 17, 2003, 12:15:00 AM »
I was in Springfield from 86-88 or something like that. I only misbehaved for like a month or 2 around my copout times. My name is Matt and I forget the host home's name. I think the oldcomer's name was Eric. He was  a cool guy, but strict and his house was surrounded by fields. I woulda had to sustain myself on vegetation probably if I copped outta there.

"
Mung, what years were you in Springfield? Were you a "misbehaver"? They all stand out in my memory: Kathy C., Heather F., Jill W., Kathy ?.

Which host home was that last one you were talking about?

Ya i was not long after you Brent. Wow 16 yrs lata... back then a day seemed like eternity in my blue chair. :scared:

George ! Wassup- It's me Matt, you still have that guitar I sold ya? How's Mark and Chuckie doin?

On another sad note, John W. also apparently took his life. He was a good friend when I got out of straight and I hadn't heard from him in a long time, till I recently found this out.

Straight, Inc. and Derivatives / flashback
« on: May 30, 2002, 08:55:00 AM »
while browsing thru here,I just had this horrible flashback of standing in line with phasers in each hand and staring into the back of the closest kids head, while waiting
obediently for our holy masters to dismiss us.
Ugh. Executive rap- motivating with your legs crossed on the floor (how degrading).
If I had known that 45 days of copout led to termination, I would've tried to survive by eating leaves, worms, and spiders in the woods, instead of trying to return home.

by "best rap leader" referring to Steve T. I guess I should clarify, the raps were a little more entertaining (unless u were the focus). Somehow, he never really gave me any shit, so even though it sucked sitting there all day, when he would show up for a rap, I knew I see some shit go on that would crack me up (even though I couldn't laugh out loud).

Billy Seal! Ya I forgot all about him- that guy was funny as shit! He was like a young Rodney Dangerfield. I mighta had him as a newcomer a few times. Remember Andrew Peri?
He was a trip too. I remember Thorpe cause him and Dave Edens were my first oldcomers.
Thorpe had an Audi which he later got setback for speeding in it. I remembered after the fact that he like to fly when he drove us to the warehouse.

Straight, Inc. and Derivatives / anyone remember intake room herding?
« on: April 09, 2002, 02:29:00 AM »
did this only happen in springfield? I was there 86-88. I can't remember if it was every night or only on Fri. nights. That crap was worse than sitting in yer chair for 12 hours. Buncha sweaty guys all manwiched against their will in a tiny room, waiting for an eternity to get the hell out of that room and into the parking lot for fresh air. It must have been only on fri. nights, cause of the parents being there. God those were some lame ways to spend your weekends as a kid.
I have to admit that the guys rap after the parents left was usually entertaining (unless the focus was on YOU...)

My feelings on straight are that yes it fucked some people up, others it helped.
Was way too long of a program for me, I learned a lot , but not anything that I couldn't have learned in a few month program.
I remember people there who definately needed
psych. help, people who shouldn't have been there in the first place (partied a few times
-parents overreacted). I remember some kid spreading empitago (sp?), crabs etc. That
was wonderful (I never got it though).
I remember that most of the staff there seemed genuinely concerned about people (at least when I was there). Ones that I remember are Steve Tourney, Brendan ? , Rob Hockersmith, Brady or Grady?, Karen ?, anyway it's wierd that I remember these names after all these years. Steve Tourney was definately the best rap leader.
All in all, I disagree totally with the straight methods. I got "honest", graduated and all, but never quite forgave my family
for putting me there. Treating chemical dependency is a little more complicated than
one rehab/method fits all. I feel I lost out on what could have been some fun years. Oh yeah, after graduating I found out that the confidentiality/honesty part of the program which is supposed to be the "cog" of recovery was basically bullshit, when my brother (never in the program) asked me about some crap that I talked about in a rap
group. Hmmm, confidential?- those staff guys notes were going STRAIGHT to the parents.
great.
props to Hank Israel and Guy Youngberg for their entertaining "performances" in group during my stay.

Straight, Inc. and Derivatives / cop out rumors
« on: April 08, 2002, 11:31:00 PM »
Not on topic, but I remember an eerie oldcomers house in DC. We had to all sleep together in this little loft, the ceiling was slanted so that you could hardly sit up in there, and there were raccoons clawing loudly at the roof inches from our heads. Maybe not eerie, just annoying and gross.
He also had ferrets which sucked, as newcomers don't wear shoes inside host homes,
and those little bastards would bite my feet during dinner etc., and there was nothing I could do about (like stand the hell up and go to another room). Dude wouldn't put his stupid ass ferrets away.

Straight, Inc. and Derivatives / asking for items.. the Straight way
« on: April 08, 2002, 11:24:00 PM »
oh yeah, we weren't allowed to talk to other newcomers period. We had to talk through the oldcomer, like "ask him to talk about his past",while being in the newcomers presence of course, cause if he wasn't there that was "squawking" or talking behind someones back, which equated to being fos.

Ya, it actually depended on whom your oldcomer was. Is that what they were called? oldcomers? It's been 15-16 years for me, straight/springfield.

Anyways, I remember having to ask to pick up a pen, toothbrush, to stand up/ sit down. Especially at the last home I was at, 'cause
I had copped out (escaped!) 3 times within a month, and they sent me to the strictest, out in the boonies, bumfuck place they could.
