The two explanations I've heard is the former, and it not being an acronym but shorthand for "see do". Chances are the latter's just a bunch of crap though.

I was just reading an article written by a former member who explained that people sort of commonly referred to him as CED. I guess they said it out like "sed" or something.

I never believed the "see yourself for who you are and do something with it" line either.
Charles Edwin Dederich University makes a lot more sense to me, especially since it's a known fact that Cedu's founder Mel Wasserman associated with those Synanon Freaks.
Regardless of what the acronym "CEDU" was meant to stand for, here's a far more appropriate meaning:

CE what we DU, is what it is supposed to stand for

Since I just read an article written by a lady who was in synanon for 25 years who was friends with Mr. CED, and she wrote that people referred to him often as "CED" (I assume they pronounced it "SED,") then it seems to be very logical that's what it stands for.

Here's what she said in her article:
"The initials 'CED' stand for Charles Edwin Dederich. They were often used as an abbreviated nickname, both verbally and in Synanon's written records."
