Seven students injured in Bethel home riot
Sunday, April 10, 2005

LUCEDALE -- A riot at Eagle Point Christian Academy, formerly known as Bethel Boys Academy, in Lucedale Friday night led to six students being taken into custody and seven other being taken to the hospital.
The George County Sheriff's Department received a call reporting the riot just before 11 p.m. Friday. Two deputies responded to the call and upon arrival at Eagle Point, called for assistance due to the number of cadets involved, George County Sheriff Garry Welford said.
"They were destroying the place," Welford said. The cadets were breaking windows, turning bunks over, breaking chairs, and trashing the facility, he said.
Six cadets were reportedly uncooperative with law enforcement and charged with disorderly conduct. They were taken into custody and transported to Forrest County Juvenile Detention Center.
Welford said seven other cadets were taken to the hospital for treatment. Six were treated and released while one remained hospitalized.
Welford said it was reported to him by Eagle Point personnel that 122 cadets should have been in the barracks. By 3:30 a.m., all 122 were accounted for, Welford said.
Cadets reportedly told Welford that a rumor circulating through Eagle Point that the home was going to be investigated by the state was what led to the riot.
"They wanted to make it look as bad as they could," Welford said. "And they did."
John Fountain, director of Eagle Point, was out of town when the riot occurred, Welford was told. He was expected back in Lucedale sometime Saturday. Eagle Point personnel were notifying the parents of students housed there of the riot, Welford said.
Fountain could not be reached by phone on Saturday. An Eagle Point employee said no statements would be given at this time. No other details of the riot have been released due to the involvement of juveniles.
Sheriff's deputies remained at Eagle Point throughout the day on Saturday. "We're just trying to maintain peace and keep the community safe," Welford said.

Good for them! Nothing like a good riot to raise morale... too bad they couldn't burn the place to the ground. Oh well, there's always next time.
-
I don't know much abou this program - it looks like a program that had a bad reputation and changed names. I've heard that Fontain is quite abusive. It's amazing how quick the police rally to support the programs instead of looking at the root cause of the disruption.
-
To bad there is no mention of the new owners.
Even so, might be worth pointing this out to the good folks in Missery.
I am wondering how badly the boys are injured and who did the injuring? I hope they didn't beat each other up. But even if they did, might have been with the idea that it was what it was going to take to get people to hear them - to get a voice heard outside the walls so to speak - and not with any malice toward each other. But of corse I speculate. I hope they do some in depth follow up.
-
Thank you Buzzkill for pointing out that there where CHILDREN involved. I was bothered by the post that suggested next time they include fire. These are young boys who now have the memory of surviving a riot in addition to their memories from the program-whether their's be good or bad memories. People, a RIOT! No child should fear for their safety like this. Please imagine the tiny 12 year olds these programs accept who surely had tears in their eyes and then again say next time burn the place. Investigate, yes. Close it (if necessary), yes. But add greater risk, No.
And let's not forget about the six students that were arrested for being beligerent to officers. These are the ones that I fear. If a Police Officer with a weapon doesn't stop them, how can my 85 year old grandmother stand a chance against them on the streets?
-
Buzzkill again, who are these new owners that you make mention of?
-
I think the people to target are the folks at Forrest County Juvenile Detention Center.
Think about it. That's where the children were taken. Perhaps they need education about these programs and what they are about.
If you have some good information with evidence to back it up, why not get a hold of these people so they can get an idea about this industry. This is important, as well as giving the same information to the sheriff mentioned in the article.
Perhaps he's been bought off, perhaps not. Until we try we will never know.

Riot rocks Lucedale academy
1 cadet missing, 9 arrested, 7 hurt after violent weekend
By Camille C. Spencer
caspencer@jackson.gannett.com
A manhunt for a missing student continued late Sunday in the wake of a weekend melee that left a dormitory building ravaged, seven cadets injured and nine cadets arrested at Eagle Point Christian Academy, a private school for troubled teen boys in Lucedale.
Four students, or cadets, ran away from the school Sunday afternoon. Three were caught less than a mile from the rural campus, but a fourth remained at large, George County Sheriff Garry Welford said Sunday night.
The sheriff said it's unknown if the school, directed by John Fountain of Lucedale, will be in session today.
The situation began at 10:57 p.m. Friday, when the Sheriff's Department received a 911 call from the school, formerly known as the Bethel Boys Academy, Welford said.
Deputies found a dormitory with shattered windows and overturned beds. Students told Welford that a rumor had been circulating that state investigators might arrive at the school over the weekend.
Students told him that caused some cadets to riot, Welford said.
The dormitory has been shut down because it's so badly damaged, Welford said, and until cleanup is completed, the school building is being used as sleeping quarters.
Efforts to reach Fountain on Sunday were unsuccessful. He took over Bethel Boys Academy from his father, Herman Fountain, nearly two years ago.
All 122 cadets were back in bed by 3:30 a.m. on Saturday, Welford said. "They (students) wanted to make it seem like there was a real problem there," he said. "None of those kids like it down there."
But the chaos continued throughout the weekend, he said. Students did additional damage to the school Saturday afternoon.
The school hired a private firm, Mississippi Security Police, that was on duty at the academy Saturday, Welford said. Deputies remained on campus over the weekend, he said.
Welford said he notified the Department of Human Services and the Department of Health of the situation over the weekend. On Sunday, Jacob Ray, spokesman for the state attorney general's office, said he could not verify whether his office is investigating.
The nine cadets were charged with disorderly conduct because they refused to comply with orders Friday and are being held at the Forrest County Juvenile Detention Center, Welford said. Of the cadets taken to George County Hospital, six were treated and released and one was hospitalized. Welford was unsure if the hospitalized cadet had returned to school on Sunday.
Bethel Boys Academy has a history of abuse allegations and state investigations dating to 1988, when 72 children were removed by state welfare officials. In 1990, a judge closed the school, then owned by Herman Fountain Sr. In 1994, Fountain reopened it as Bethel Boys Academy.
Early this year, the school changed its name to Eagle Point Christian Academy. John Fountain said the name change is an effort to disassociate the school from the past allegations.

She'd do well to not assist in forcing them into an abusive program. If people are good only because they fear punishment, and hope for a reward, then we are a sorry lot indeed.

Well, first, twelve year olds aren't all that tiny.
Second, consider the possibility that the six that were snarky to the officers *wanted* to get arrested because jail is a better place than that "school." If they keep committing violations in jail, who knows, maybe they'll let them stay.
Getting arrested was not necessarily intentional for those six, but without information, we shouldn't discount the possibility.
If *I* was a teen and I knew my parents were going to have me transported to a facility from my bed that night, *I'd* go out and smash a few car windows and slug a few cops if I thought it would get me prosecuted and put in juvie instead.
I for sure would. I haven't heard of one of these programs yet, with the exception of genuine RTC's for mentally ill children that *don't* take JDs or addicts who aren't also mentally ill, that *I* wouldn't find worse than juvenile detention.
At least in juvie I could still write letters to my friends and earn pocket money at jobs inside and use it to make calls out on the phone.
And every time before I was eighteen that I was about to get out, I'd get my best friend inside to let me slug him and stage a fight that I "started" and get him to file a complaint so I could get time added on---as a juvenile. Or I'd slug one of the guards. One that I knew *would* press charges instead of just beating the crap out of me.
I sure would.
So I wouldn't put it past any of the kids in there to be smart enough to do what I would have done and get themselves arrested and sent to juvie to keep themselves out of "Eagle Point."

I find it interesting that the owner is not pressing any charges. I interpret that to mean that he doesn't dare let this get aired in court, where he and his employees and all the other kids can be subpoenaed.

I thought the same thing. Those boys would have a chance to say they weren't rioting, they were simply doing what the girl's compound had done. Brought media and law enforcement attention to the abuse they were suffering. I am sure those boys notice every Sunday in church that the half where the girl victims used to sit is now empty.
I thought the biggest cry for help was that those boys continued to riot all weekend even after the police got there. I assume because the police were just going to quite things down and leave them there. Those boys did NOT stop until they were arrested. If that was the only way to safety then that was the route they took. My son would have done the same thing. Take me to jail, at least I will get an unmonitored phone call to my parents then. They will also be given a Public Defender. These are NOT violent boys down there. I have talked to so many victims from there. Back talking, smoking a little pot or ciggs, sex with the girlfriend/boyfriend. Really and truly, typical teen stuff.

Nice to see the young people standing up for their rights and not putting up with any bullshit.....riot on, my young friends....kill some asshole staff members next time....I wouldn't hold it against you.....

That does not help matters.

Apparently it did. The cops showed up and rescued these brave rioters only after they had resorted to violence. Too bad they didn't kill one of the abusive assholes on the staff--maybe it would give cause for cowardly child abusers to think twice before accepting a job with a teen torture facility.

Nope, wrong, that's not how it plays out. The kids would only spend their lives in prison and the dearly departed mindfucker would only be held out as a martyr.

This would be the very same Anthony Lawrence whom we had to beg for over a year to press charges. We were finally given a court date to appear before the grand jury this past October, 2004. Each victim had approx. 10 minutes to speak. We were still waiting for a verdict (weeks later) when I get a call from the Editor, Laura with the Clarion Ledger News out of Jackson, Miss. She stated she had just spoke with John Fountain and he stated "there is no abuse, never has been. There was just a group of former students down here whinning to the grand jury - nothing ever came of it". Hmmmm, we are all still waiting for a verdict and john Fountain already knows it?

DA to hear concerns on Eagle Point riot
By QUINCY C. COLLINS
THE SUN HERALD
PASCAGOULA - District Attorney Tony Lawrence is examining concerns over the recent riot at Eagle Point Christian Academy in Lucedale.
"I have been contacted with concerns over the continued incidents that have occurred at the academy, and I am collecting information to determine what the law would allow me to do to correct those problems if those problems are found to exist," Lawrence said.
Since the riot Friday, nine cadets have been sent to Forrest County Juvenile Detention Center for disorderly conduct or being uncooperative. Seven cadets were treated and released from the local hospital with minor injuries.
George County Sheriff's officials said the riot may have been instigated by several cadets in an attempt make the school, which operates under a Chancery Court decree and is monitored, look bad during a state inspection.
School officials have said they plan to send 20 to 30 boys home and are taking measures to improve security

i was at eagle point christian academy and its not a christian academy at all, it should be shut down as soon as possible i was lucky to get out
-
yea i was at eagle point, i was one of the twins that got pulled out after the riot, and the reason we rioted is because we wanted to be heard and that was the only way
-
I hope you boys from Eagle will consider filing a report with ISAC
http://www.isaccorp.org (http://www.isaccorp.org)
And I hope you'll stay in touch.
Consider registering so people can tell its you posting. You needn't identify yourself in any way - for instance, my name isn't really BuzzKill.

I'm glad you got out.
If you want to be heard, and you want them shut down, I second BuzzKill's suggestion you file a report with ISAC. ISAC is one of the groups that works to get places like Eagle Point shut down. They aren't the only group, so you can talk to as many groups as you want, but I think ISAC's probably a good starting point.
I know it can be hard to talk about this stuff in any detail when bad things have happened to you, so nobody's going to think badly of you whether you can talk about it enough to file a report or whether you're just not ready to talk about it yet.
Please register a screen name so we can recognize you---Ginger who runs this board is a survivor of another bad place, so she makes sure it's just as anonymous to register as it is to not register.
My name isn't really Timoclea, either.
I'm glad you got out and I hope you're either okay or that you get to be okay at some point.
It's nice to hear from people like you who got out, because it reminds those of us who try to shut bad places down that people *can* get out---makes it easier to keep on trying. So thanks.

I second that. It's really important that you guys go on record with your story for the public to see. Your stories are valid and need to be told. I too hope both of you stick around. All who doubted or denied would be lost. If I were you, I'd be on my way to get my kid out of there. There is a lawsuit against Eagle Point, detailing horrific abuse of students by staff. They are owned and operated by WWASP, the most abusive "teen help" organization in existence today. How much more do people need to see that that place is dangerous?

Did you know my son tony? he is currently there as we speak.

oh ok, yes I call weekly,, write weekly, just that they monitor the call he is 3ooo milles away and this is why I need to plan the trip, when I speak to him not sure if he can really tell me the truth,, His mother and step dad sent him there with my permission because he was so out of control,,,
-
were you there during the riot?
-
I am sorry for asking you, I am knew to this site and seem to post things wrong,, But my kid is still there and was wondering if you knew him,, his name is Tony
-
yes but they seem to think that the kid is just manipulating us so that we let him out..He is 15 and wants to do as he wills,, doesnt understand the fact that we are responsible by law for him. That what he does affects us both legally and morally. When he becomes of legal majority, he can do as he wishes. He became violent and defiant. He believed in anarchy as a religion. No respect for anybody but himself. He had all the love and acceptance a parent can give, just wanted more than one parent could give.
-
that is some message,,, made me think that all the good I think I am ,, leads me to hell.. something to ponder and reflect
-
Think about the fact that they will stop at nothing to keep him in there, and make it impossible for him to tell you ANYTHING bad about the program...
Why do they do that all the time to every kid? Every Kid isnt a manipulating liar, you know.
And even still, I degress. Do you even know how these people are supposed to be helping your son out? Did they give any detail? Saying they're tough or 'instill' something is so vague its meaningless.
There is nothing stopping you from getting your son out and actually listening to him without threat of being sent back and punished for lying. There is a *LOT* of reasons to remove him, and a lot of evidence both circusmtantial and concrete about how damn fishy and oversecretive these programs are - and a lot of credible accusations of abuse.
Thats your son in there right now and you really dont KNOW how hes being treated becuase they wont let him tell you. He is more important than some program's bullshit. Go get your son. Some mornings, it's just not worth chewing through the leather straps.

thnks for your opinion.. Were you a cadet there? did you know somebody who spent time there?

Niles is 20 years old with mental disabilitys.
He has never been in a program, he has just jumped on thhe bamdwagon here wanting to be accepted. He knows nothing about any of these places first hand, only what he has read on the internet. Just thought you should know.
-
Mental "disabilitys"?
Disabilities, dipshit. And no I dont have one. I WAS MISDIAGNOSED as having Aspergers syndrome, but it turns out it was untrue.
Anywho, I didnt jump on the bamdwagon(bandwagon) "wanting to be accepted", I have a conscience and found out about all the abuse and secrecy and coverups. I've seen tons of evidence and talked to lots of people. No, I havent been in a program first hand, and most people who are involved with this *ARE* either parents, previous victims of the programs themselves, or apologists like yourself. I'm here so that I can get to the bottom of the truth of it, prevent future abuse, and get justice for those who WERE abused.
All you do is deny and throw bullshit accusations from behind a paper bag.
Anyway, thanks for the fun, mr. troll. Next time you accuse someone elses mental capacity, I suggest you actually spell properly! I condemn false prophets, I condemn the effort to take away the power of rational decision, to drain people of their free will--and a hell of a lot of money in the bargain. Religions vary in their degree of idiocy, but I reject them all. For most people, religion is nothing more than a substitute for a malfunctioning brain.

thanks for the info. I guess there is so much chatter about eagle point, I must go see for myself. Lawsuits and allegations of abuse are everywhere. I guess the truth of what eagle point is all about is something one will never know unless one experiences it for himself. My son was either going to Juvenile hall, prison or eagle point. His choices left me with these choices. His decisions were his alone. Perhaps out of this, he will decide life is worth living for in a posistive way and make something of himself. A contributor to humanity instead of a drain of humanity. Not sure about the mental case. I was hoping to find a person that was in eagle point recently and knew my son. This is all. If anybody has been recently enrolled in eagle Point during or after the recent riot, please post something here. I am a heartbroken father who did not have custody of my son who is there now.. Thank you for reading my plea.

You dont have custody? Why the hell not? Whats going on?

The law is for the lawless.
The state of Mississippi, the County of George and the City of Lucedale CONTINUE to let that hell hole gulag called Bethel or Eagle Point stay open.
Who is responsible if a tortured and abused (been there saw it, am a victim myself) cadet, student, whatever they call participants in this private jail, should defend themselfs and kill an abuser???
I do not advocate any violence, even a riot, I do not justify them one bit in rioting.
I plead with sensible, reasonable people evrywhere that are graduates or associated with this place Bethel, or Eagle Point oir whatever the Fountains are calling it THIS WEEK to shed the terrible reputation do not buy the whitewash,
'
AS in Dragnet, only the Name has been changed, but in this case to protect the GUILTY!!!!!!
Speak up. If this continuing misery is not stopped someone just could die! I horror at that thought and beg people to write the authorities and demand the place be closed and vacated forever!
I blame the aforementioned authorities which have literally looked the OTHER WAY for almost 30 years as this drama has continued to play out.
So who is going to step up to the plate and take responsibility for a kid (yea, they have em 12-14 years old) who is being thrashed by a 6 ft 4 inch 300 lb jack booted thug putting a knife in this guy and killing him?
Clearly there is case after case after case of kids placed in jeopardy of their lives there.
The kid is responsible for his actions, true enough. But why do we allow the conditions and environment and opportunity for tradgey,,death of a student or instructor, to continue to loom there.
Mark my words, I KNOW that place like few people on this earth know it and I can tell you the riot is merely the tip of the iceberg.
The next event to happen there is likely to be something we will all shead many tears and feel remorse for many years over.
Are you listening??? If so then ACT on it, write the AG of Miss, the authorities of George County, Child protective, the city of Lucedale, write whoever will listen.
If God fearing non vilolent people do not act, there will be anarchy in the streets,
Do YOU want to have responsibility because of YOUR inaction for that happening?

I just wanted to post that anyone who had John's cell phone number BEFORE this incident should know that he changed it after the incident.
In April I changed my cell phone number so it would be local in Hattiesburg for business purposes and wound up with his old number (ending in 9942). I do not know John and up until today had no clue why I kept getting calls for him. Today I was called by an upset parent and in talking to this parent I finally figured out who this mystry person that had my phone before me was.
In the past I have had people calling me in the middle of the night leaving voicemails and irate parents yelling at me and even kids calling and hollering at me. One woman from CA even accused me of being John's wife...last time I checked i am only married to one man. I'm in the position that I can not change this number at this time, so if you could please get the word out, that he no longer has his old cell number I would appreciate it very much.
p.s. I have clearly stated my name and business in my voicemail to try and stop some of the calls.
-
Oh I hope you check back in -
Who is John - what are the irate parents going on about - and how did you find Fornits?
Went back to page one and found this:
John Fountain, director of Eagle Point,. . .
So its this John?
I'm sorry - but this is too funny.
He had to change his number and you got stuck with it?

Hey, dad of kid at Eagle Point--if you decide your kid needs to come home, you can go into family court in the jurisdiction that does your custody. Your kid is over 14, so chances are if you file the right paperwork to compel them to produce him in person and he says he wants to live with you, the court will let him.
You *can* get him out even if your ex and her spouse want to keep him there. ISAC can give you information on what's worked for other family members of kids in these places.
If you decide he needs to be out, then get him out.
And I wouldn't take the risks of Bethel even if my kid *did* need some sort of residential care. There are places that are responsible choices and places that aren't. Pick a hundred parents and let them read Bethel's history. After a thorough reading of the documented history and the accounts of past residents I suspect the percentage of parents who would think Bethel was a *good* idea would be very small.
I suspect the number of functional adults with decent lives, responsible jobs, etc., who would believe the line that *all* the kids are lying would also be vanishingly small.
Dad, it's hard for me to tell from what you posted exactly what you think. To me you sound ambivalent, but maybe I'm reading you wrong.
I don't like programs, but as programs go, Bethel is right up there with Tranquility Bay and Provo Canyon as the programs I like the *least*.
As a fellow parent (my daughter is 9), I hope you will make wise choices.

OK, yes, that is the John I'm talking about. So far the parent that I talked to yesterday was the first to really tell me who John is. As for the massages, they have been deleted b/c usually they are just anoying more than anything. I got voice mail just for the purpose of being able to have an outgoing message for these people to hear and maybe get the point that it is NO LONGER JOHN'S PHONE NUMBER. Some people do not listen to it apparently and leave me messages anyway. Most of the calls are from kids calling and hollering stuff that you can not really understand mixed in with a name or two. I figure they are prank calls.
One from a parent that I received back in late April was from a mother saying that if he (John) did not call her back she was flying some guy (she said a name) out to see about her kid. That she had called the office and no one there would tell her anything and she was tired of this. Of course I had no clue what the heck she was talking about b/c I had just gotten the phone number. I was polite enough to call her back to tell her that she had called the wrong number. She said, "Oh, I just thought that you were Johns new wife or soemthing." I was just nice and said "No mam, I don't even know who John is. Since your matter with him sounded pressing I figured you would like to know that you had not reached him. It is really none of my business, but since I received your message I thougth it would be decent of me to let you know." She had a bit of an attitude with me, but I look at it as informing her of her mis-information so she could rectify her situation. I would hope that someone would have done the same had I been in her situation.
One caller did ask me if I knew John's new phone number....hello? who the heck is John? You know more that I do on that matter kid. I literally had to spell it out for him b/c he was not getting the fact that I have nothing to do with man other that having the misfortune of getting his darn old phone number!!!
Yesterday when I talked to the man who explained to me who the mystery John is I decided to Google this school and see what I could find. I found you all here, so I figured I would try to get the word out that he doesn't have that # anymore. Usually if I get an out of state call that I don't recognize I just let it go to voice mail now, I don't waste my time explaining.
My problem is that I'm in insurance and all these calls are anoying, as I never know if it is a customer calling or someone for good ole John. You might imagine how frustrating it can be. The calls seem to come in spurts. A few in a week and them none for a week or two. They are now starting to decline in numbers, so maybe in a few more months they will stop.
Thanks for listening to my ramble here! Looks like I had a lot to say...lol

Hello again, wrong number lady -
I do know something about what your going through with this. I have been given new phone numbers that had belonged to folks with "credit problems". Sometimes several times a day, I'd have to try and explain this was no longer their number - but the same places would call over and over - apparently not believing that Bill Bailey (no kidding) or Moreene, or lately Deborah - do not live here - and NO - I don't know them or know how to reach them.
If you get anymore angry calls, suggest they contact ISAC and file a complaint.

And thanks from dropping buy

I was just reading an Associated Press story about EaglePCA and something struck me... here is a quote form the story
"One cadet from California has not been found, officials said."
The week of the riot was around the time I got the new #. The woman calling called me around the 12th or 13th (I remember b/c it was a few days before my job transfer on 4/17.)She was calling from California b/c I recognized the area code and thought it was my best friend out in LA. Her first call was around 2am so the next morning I called it back and got her voice mail. I just left a message. She immediately called me back and I explained everything to her. I bet the missing kid was her son. No wonder she was so pissy. WOW!!!

Hey! I was a cadet at eagle point during the riot too... I remember a kid that came in who was big on anarchy.. black hair, skinny? We go by last names in there. Twins! You called my house and told my mom you got out! She wrote down the wrong phone number so i cant call you back. this is m. young. Post again, we need to get in touch.
If any one has a son in eagle point go and get him now! They are not allowed to tell you anything about the program!

Eagle Point? A new alias for a very old, nagging, chronic problem in Lucedale, MS.
Eagle Point is the NEW name of BETHEL ACADEMY. Bethel AKA Eagle Point is a leopard to use a metaphor. The name has changed to protect the GUILTY yet nothing else has. As a LEOPARD is a LEOPARD by any name, paint him white, grren or blue underneath the new name or paint job or whatever is STILL A LEOPARD!!!
One of the kids pulled out of the home by his parents complained the kid was overworked and under fed! That is an old tactic that has been the rule for years there. I saw it myself, first hand. If Bethel or Eagle Point or whoever they are this week has so changed since the state of Miss slapped their hands two years ago why then are they working those BOYS like grown men at heavy MANUAL LABOR 12 or more hours a day 6 days a week?
Does this make sense to YOU? IT DOES NOT to me!
Parents PAY to send their kids there! GOD FORBID!
