Title: Sitting in your pity
Post by: Carmel on February 15, 2005, 11:34:00 PM
Anyone remember this one?

Always followed by the obligatory "get out of your pity".

This applied to any and all complaints or frustrations about any and everything.

Also classified as a "pat" phrase.  Most likely followed by the "pat" answer..."apply it to yourself"...accompanied by a sharp jabbing motion towards one's forehead.  Unless of course it was a viscious 5th phaser.

Pity, nope, not in our group. It was sitting in your shit, get out of your shit, don't come in here dumping shit on the group. Pat, yes, that was a very commonly used term.

Both of these expressions were commonly used in VA str8 during the early 80's.

Ya...this was it too, however swearing was banned when I was in, along with "cool", "man" and "dude".  The only swearing even moderately tolerated was by staff or by a particularly rageful 5th phaser during OMR.

I remember people, the guys especially, using the term "guy" in place of the latter two.  I still cringe when I hear people use it like that.

Its hard to believe that any of us actually participated or were a part of something as  isolated and fucked up as Straight, no wonder people who were not there can't figure out what the fuck we are talking about when we try to explain it.

What about whenever a 4th phaser started going to RSC ( rational Self Counseling) and learned a new word like "Cognitive Dissidence" and then would go home and bore the shit out of his newcommers with his new found vocabulary. Now that I never did, I prefered to sleep...

As "pat" phrases go, one that always gave me a moment of hesitation was when the words

"Where do YOU get off..." were hollered/screamed/mentioned.

And of course that would preceed any one of countless 'confrontations" from greed/lust/dishonesty/lack of motavation...hell it was almost used for every circumstance back in the day.

It had a menacing sound to it, I can all most hear it now...."Where do YOU get off reading and posting to a website talking about Straight" How demeaning, degrading, not to mention what it really says.....Your not worthy.....yeah well fuck that :flame:

I remember confrontations that would make no sense to anyone but former "phasers" example "You know John Doe it's ridiculous how you sit in your pity leaching off this group. I am sick and tired of working my program and having to deal with your apathy. You know what guy, if you don't care about going back out there to use and die I wish you'd just leave my group alone! Some of us do care! Some of us know this is our only chance to make it! (Obligitory tears in the eyes) Some of us thank our Higher Powers for this chance! When I was using I thought I was a Billy Bad Stick too! But I'm straight now and relapse means death, the sooner you learn to work the steps and apply all this knowledge to yourself the better! It only works if you work it!! One day at a time."

had to explain to someone today about how they controlled everything, even where your eyes were.

he said "well what if you sat there and looked up at the ceiling?"

i thought about it. oh yeah! "then they would hold your head and turn it in the right direction."

then he wanted to know if we still had a choice to pay attention or not. it gets complicated fast trying to explain Straight.

Rational Self something or a fuckingnother, it was all bull shit anyway. Does anybody remember the books they handed out in those classes? With the characters Rational Ralph and irrational Rachel or some shit like that. Completely pathetic, with some holier than though Senior staff, in my case Cris Cassler in Sarasota. Pretending to be some kind of psychology professor, and all that he was learning at Junior College. Probably because the dumb ass didn't have the SAT's to go to a real school. I remeber Straight telling the parents that when their kid seven stepped they would have more "Awareness" then somebody with a psych degre

No, it's Cognitive Dissonance

Here's the Program definition
http://www.dmu.ac.uk/~jamesa/learning/dissonance.htm (http://www.dmu.ac.uk/~jamesa/learning/dissonance.htm)

And here's one from the more commonly accepted reality
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cognitive_dissonance (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cognitive_dissonance)

I had a great deal of cognitive dissidance going on. That's what was generally termed "having bad thoughts" or "getting into your head" and eventually, upon voicing my disseidence, led to my getting "sat on" and then sent to "TR".

Dissidence is good, buddy. It really is. Voicing it is something that you should not enter into lightly. But having it is crucial to being a free soverign individual.

You should be allowed to do whatever you want with your own person and property, as long as you don't physically harm the person or property of a nonconsenting other.

It was both. RSA and RST. Never did really get the distinction. Now I suppose it had to do w/ the author finding out something about the Program and balking at trademark infringement or something.

I knew I had an ass kicking coming already, so it wasn't really any great risk. But it's still one of my prouder moments, even at this late date.

Yep!

Is uniformity [of opinion] attainable? Millions of innocent men, women, and children, since the introduction of Christianity, have been burnt, tortured, fined, imprisoned; yet we have not advanced one inch towards uniformity. What has been the effect of coercion? To make one half the world fools, and the other half hypocrites.

Preferring to sleep is merely one of the manifestations of your druggie will, Patriot, and by choosing to follow it instead of the sage wisdom we were trying to share with you, you have doomed yourself to a fate of jail, insanity, and DEATH.  Your cavalier dimissal of my creation, RSC, indicates that you truly enjoy wallowing in the irrational, destuctive urges foisted upon you by your disease.  Sadly, you chose to submerge yourself in the depravity of the drug culture, which is precisely where you will remain, clinging to your false pride and druggie beliefs--the same beliefs that got you sent to Straight, Inc. in the first place.  If you had only applied your program, you wouldn't be "sitting in your shit" and mocking the Tools of Personal Change.  It truly amazes me how you can twist the love and compassion we showed you into some sort of 'crime' that you blame us for perpetrating.  Luckily for you, we still care enough to have reserved you a seat in a blue chair on the front row of the new, improved, all-ages, faith-based Straight, Inc.-by-the-Sea (formerly Straight, Inc. v2.0)!  Love ya!
