MARY KATE OLSEN IS CURRENTLY AT A FACILITY THAT IS DIRECTLY ACROSS THE STREET FROM PROVO CANYON SCHOOL. IT WAS ONCE PART OF THE OSMOND STUDIOS. NOW IT IS USED AS A REHAB FACILITY.

Here's some more information. It would be great if these magazines would inform the public of the real issue - mass child abuse in these facilities. We should all write to them and let them know of the abuses in Utah rehab facilities.

Well, I feel sorry for the girl, because it looke like she does have an underweight problem.
I've got a sister who's fought with that kind of problem and it's not fun. Not fun a-tall.
I am going to hope against hope that the place where she is is not like PCS and is actually reasonable residential treatment.
Behavior modification that isn't the heavy-duty overdone misuse of Skinnerian behaviorism, but is instead a careful, moderate education in how to cope with eating a healthy, nutritious, calorically appropriate diet whenever the clock says it's time to eat, is---as far as I've been able to tell---actually essential to putting your health back together when you have an eating disorder.
Eating disorders can be life-threatening, and one of the photos they showed of her on TV she looked just plain skeletal.
I have no problem believing this particular kid could be one of the cases for which residential treatment is appropriate.
I just hope like hell, for her sake, that in this case it's *good* residential treatment and not abusive, hyper-stressful, and confrontational.
That it's in Utah and apparently in a neighborhood with a bad reputation (PCS) doesn't inspire confidence.
But for her sake I *hope* this place is much better than its neighbors.

There are so many good facilities that specialize in treating eating disorders, that achieve good results and that are known in the professional community. And, yes, many of them are located in this country. Why going for an unkown program in such a bad area?
I have my doubts about this place. I just hope for Mary Kate's sake that Cirque Lodge isn't as bad as PCS, and that she'll get the help she needs there.

Joe: All the kids are real stories and we?ve taken a license with what goes on from day to day obviously, but they are all based on real people. My character?s just a collection of people who we met.
Marie: So you have characters come and go and all that kind of thing?
Joe: Well, there?s 150 students and we really center our stories on 6 or 7 of them, Cliffhangers they're called, that?s the group.

Higher Ground is shown on EWAM on satellite or digital cable. Does is air anywhere else?
I personally know you all are fighting a losing "cause." The State of Missouri has been using a similar model in the juvenile justice setting. Many other States are looking seriously into adopting this for their juvenile offenders. Behavior modification works for those that want it to.
I'm not a fan of 12 step, I'm an advocate of personal growth, whatever that looks in each program.
Mary Kate is a troubled teen who happens to be of legal age and a celebrity. Her father took her there - was it against her will? Who cares, she's there in a life saving intervention. Because she is high profile, this will have a positive effect on these types of programs, as will the show Higher Ground.
All the garbage alleged against the Programs, especially the WWASPS programs which are the best out there, are now being replaced by positive stories and the backing of States like Missouri, therapists, celebrities, social workers, judges, parents and of course, the teens whose lives have taken on Higher Ground!

Higher Ground was aired way back in 2000 when Programs weren't widely known. It was cancelled for low viewing. It's been on cable for a few months - maybe a "tickler" to see the interest in bringing it back. It's about time!

What we need is Michael Moore to take an interest in this effort. Perhaps he'd have time after the election!! He doesn't take too kindly to the abuse of kids, and he might get off on exposing how the government supports the industry and the rampant fraud perpetrated by the industry.

Confrontational therapeutic models are inappropriate in the absence of rigorous clinical studies supporting their safety and effectiveness for specific problems.
It is inappropriate to lock teens away in what amount to private prisons, against their will, for problems that are not severe enough to require residential treatment.
The Programs, including the WWASPS ones, do both of these things.
Mary Kate Olsen, being of legal age, is liable to get the higher quality residential care enjoyed by adults who have their own money and are free to leave if they aren't getting good care.

I hope that Mary Kate recovers from her addiction to Cocaine. This facility is obviously for the well-healed at $26,000 per month. It is annoying that the media who are waiting to catch a glimpse of Mary Kate, are too blind to look over their shoulder at the poor children at Provo Canyon School. I wonder if they can hear their screams?

The children across from Mary Kate may be suffering more than you know at Provo Canyon School. It has a reputation as a facility of last resort - but families are never informed of this. Everyone, regardless of their diagnosis, addiction, or mental disease are all treated in the same manner. All receive similar punitive "consequences" from breaking rules that are often made up as they go.

Mary-Kate and her fraternal twin sister, Ashley, have been stars since they first appeared on the TV show Full House as babies, sharing a role. They control a billion-dollar entertainment industry that includes direct-to-video films, home decorating, and clothing lines. In May, they released their second feature film, New York Minute, a box-office disappointment.
In recent months, rumors circulated that Mary-Kate Olsen was suffering from anorexia, and she did nothing to dispel them during her publicity rounds for New York Minute because she appeared frail and bony.
One health expert noted that celebrities are under extreme pressure to be thin.

Mary-Kate Olsen, 18, who is battling an eating disorder, is being treated at Cirque Lodge in Orem, Utah, Us Weekly reports.
The facility specializes in the "effective treatment of individuals and families afflicted with the disease of alcoholism and other drug addictions," according to its official Web site.
When the news of Olsen's hospitalization broke last week, her longtime publicist, Michael Pagnotta, "categorically" denied to USA TODAY that drugs were involved.
In explaining why Olsen is at a facility that specializes in drug and alcohol abuse treatment, Pagnotta told Us : "It is a multi-treatment facility, which is perfectly capable of accommodating her needs. Mary-Kate has a team of people working with her, including a renowned psychologist in this field and a nutritionist."
He again emphasized to Us that "Mary-Kate Olsen is being treated for an eating-related disorder."
In its new issue, Us reports that Olsen's twin, Ashley, visited her sister at the facility, where they had a loving reunion. "They embraced," the twins' father, Dave Olsen, told the magazine. "Obviously Mary-Kate was very happy, and so was Ashley."
Dave Olsen tells Us Mary-Kate has had an eating disorder for two years.

I believe very little I hear on TV.
It's more like this:
Moore did excellent research and had excellent documentation. He exposed things the media did not cover. He strung together the facts in a comprehensive way to educate the public. Any statements he made were supported with public records.
Not to say that public records don't contain false information. I guess it boils down to who you choose to believe.

She is there and i thought that i saw her. I was staying at stewart point in provo and i thought i saw her doing her make-up. The place is so heavily gaurded, you cant even look in the up-stairs rooms with out them telling you to bug off.

The people running Provo Canyon are sick and should be shot. I have no idea how some of these places have stayed open. It shows how fucked up this society really is. So an eating disorder can be fatal? Does that give you an excuse to torture the person suffering? Would you beat up someone with cancer thinking it will cure them? Get a fucking clue. None of these people have any scientific basis for their "treatments". They are just sick bastards who really don't deserve to live.

Ya bud that makes since. First off Cirque is a drug treatment facility. They admit people with only drug and alcohol problems....they will help with the anorexia and maybe fly in some specialist, but their main focus is drugs and alcohol. Cirque is an awesome place to get sober.

Good. I'm glad.
I don't think I've heard anything negative about cirque.
You know, there are good reasons for residential treatment in specific circumstances. Addiction (as opposed to casual use) is one of those good reasons.
There are good residential treatment facilities that treat kids with all the respect and human decency adults are entitled to and receive.
I don't think anybody wants to shut down all rehab and all residential treatment.
I just want (and I think most of the rest of the people here want) for the rules to be tightened so that people who don't need residential treatment don't get warehoused there for the convenience of their parents and stepparents, and so that people who do need residential treatment get quality care.
I talked to a program employee over the weekend (not cirque, somewhere else, met her socially, pure coincidence) and one of the problems she's run into is occasionally having counseling staff come on and get the mistaken impression they're a bootcamp and she's had to have them fired (she's on the therapy end), and she's had to do PTSD care on some of the kids who come into her facility from the "bad" programs that are fairly notorious on the internet.
While it's true that just because some of the survivors of bad programs here have had a bad experience, it doesn't make all residential treatment bad, it's also true that you having had a good rehab experience doesn't mean that there aren't lots of bad places out there.
Sunshine is the best disinfectant.
Let's separate the good from the bad so that the kids that need outpatient family therapy get it, and the kids that need residential care all get good care.

I remember reading about her in the past when the problems began, she had about 5 different therapists taking care of her then, I think those where her 5 worst problems so it's little wonder she is where she is now.
As long as she has money to pay these people her problems will never end. That's the real tragedy.
