Fortress Rome greets Bush
ROME : Police turned Rome into a fortress as anti-war protesters pledged to give US President George W. Bush a heated reception during his 36-hour visit which includes talks with Pope John Paul II and Italy's Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.
Carabinieri police saturated the historic city centre, with heavy concentrations of the paramilitary force along the main thoroughfares and piazzas, as well as bridges, rail stations and airports. Helicopters droned in the sky overhead.

The interior ministry said some 10,000 troops have been mobilised.
Early morning traffic in the city centre was notably lighter as many people stayed away from possible flashpoints. The US State Department on Thursday issued a warning to American citizens living in Italy to stay away from crowded areas.
Around 1,000 demonstrators arrived in Rome by train early Friday to join the street protests scheduled for mid-afternoon, rail authorities said.
Bush and his wife Laura, who arrived at Rome's Ciampino airport shortly after midnight, spent the night at the US ambassador Mel Sembler's heavily guarded residence in the leafy Parioli suburb of the city. Nearby roads were closed to traffic.
The Bush motorcade was set to roll at 11 am (0900 GMT) with a visit to Italian counterpart Carlo Azeglio Ciampi at the Quirinale Palace his first stop.
The highlight of the visit, an audience with Pope John Paul II to discuss their differences over Bush's Iraq policy, was scheduled for noon.
Bush is to present the 84-year-old pontiff with the Congressional Medal of Honour, his country's highest civilian honour, the Vatican said.
The US president was due to attend a wreath-laying ceremony in the afternoon at the Ardeatine Caves outside Rome, the site of one of Italy's worst massacres of civilians at the hands of the Nazis. The ceremony is part of the 60th anniversary commemmorations of the liberation of Rome by Allied forces, the official reason for the Bush visit.
Italy's Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, who said Thursday he feared anti-war protests could turn violent, is to host Bush at a gala dinner on Friday evening.

The Pope ended his speech with "God bless America." To bad none of us were there to know how much sarcasm was in his voice as he uttered those words.
-
Fuck the pope.
-
You know it amazes me the dichotomy of the situation with the Pope. Here he is telling Bush how bad Iraq and the abuses we did on prisoners was: however, his own disciples and representatives in your lands, the priest themselves have molested children. And look how the church dealt with it all, shame on them. The Pope does not have the moral authority here at all. Actually what he did is worse. It was perpetrated on CHILDREN. He didn?t mention one word about how the Catholic Church is setting the standard! They are the King of Child Abuse in the world. I don?t think any can challenge that statement. Witness the many current lawsuits about this, it?s just nothing less than shameful.
Thou shall not cast stones against those that live in glass houses.
:smokin:
-
I'm sure the pope was passing around the basket looking for "donations"
-
Please don't be over dramatic "the king of child abuse?" OK point taken but that is untrue. And passing the basket? Never not the Pope. Oh and until anyone here is half as educated as he is ye should not cast the first stone. I am not catholic or religious in anyway, just my beliefs.
-
When you think, Catholic priest, you think NAMBLA. Sad but true. At least I do. Show me evidence that this is more common elsewhere. Until then, I crown the Pope! :nworthy: :flame:
-
The pope isn't Jesus, the son of god or the king of jews. so he's a religious figure and the leader of the catholic church. Big deal the catholic church. The catholic church has been involved in scandals inolving the abuse of children. Bush is involved in the abuse of children. what a lovely bunch. both "leaders" could be courageous by saying they were sorry and will eliminate all abuses of children and people.
-
These days when I think of any church I think of child molesting and the statute of limitations finally getting pushed aside at least a little bit so that people don't have to be so afraid to come forward about what they had to do to have their sins forgiven.
-
Well you mentioned NAMBLA. This is not a strictly catholic organization. Nor will I try to prove otherwise. This group of sickos come from all walks of life. Hell just the other day a Ringling Brothers circus clown was found with pornographic materials with young boys doing god knows what. Under your reasoning all clowns are pedophiles. All of this sickens me greatly. However the fact is pedophiles will go where the children are ie the boyscouts, circus clowns, priests, pastors, or the park to get their rocks off watching. The case launched against the catholic church was highly publicized as it challenged the statutes of limitations in this country. Therefore, yes for now everyone equates all priests as pedophiles. But if your really interested check out the information yourself. I am not here to prove anything to you. I do find it interesting that as soon as I disagree slightly with your take on things I get the burning angry face at the end of the post. Sorry I won't always agree with you. Once again just my take on the situation.
-
The Pope did apologize. Bush well don't hold your breath on that one.
-
I dont think the Pope is really alive...I think they have him propped up and people behind him moving his head and arm ever so slightly..
Hes a stuffed mummified human doll

You're right.
I was kidding around, by pointing out the obvious, in that a LOT of Catholic priests have molested young men/boys. That's all. I'm not trying to make a political statement.

Uh Lezli don't you have a ladies issues class to teach at the trailer you call church of the local protestant rednecks? It's amazing you have time at all to respond to posts here. Question do you peel the cigarette from your lips there before you shout amen when the preacher/local truck driver brings out the snakes to handle?
Seem over the top? You seem to be good with stereotypes, thought you'd like to know how a percentage of the world thinks of southern protestants.
Catholic priest=pedophile
souther preacher=toothless GED clad snake handler
The way I see it one idiotic stereotype deserves another.

Yeah, I can too, but why is he attaching that stereotype to me? Maybe he got his feelings all upset because he's Catholic? I don't smoke, live in the south, or go to church in a trailer with southern protestants. I suppose it's just fun to throw insults around.
-
That was me. :smokin: <-----hehehe...
-
Well Lezlie that happens a lot around here just keep your sense of humor
-
Actually I attached it to you b/c you mentioned NAMBLA. My whole point wasn't do you smoke, or actually live in the south. The point was stereotypes like bringing up NAMBLA when Catholic priests are mentioned, is as I said idiotic. In the end thanks for helping my case.
Oh I am not Catholic or fond of insulting others. I am however eager to point out when I think things aren't resonable.
-
I don't know I can see her point with catholic priest and NAMBLA, why would so many pediphiles hide behind the collar, the church covers for them. I can see her point. Would you let your child go on a outing with a Catholic Priest??? not me, Doesn't make catholics bad but ya have to wonder about the people who run the church and cover for these bastards.

In all honesty any children of mine have never and will never go on an outing with priest, preacher, or camp counselor. In fact I eyeball Santa every Christmas during the whole "sit on my lap" tradition. Does this mean I agree with the NAMBLA remark of course not. That is a media-fed stereotype in my opinion.
Off the topic, but as a side note:
This one of my largest gripes with Straight also. During my tenure there at least 4 of the parents were known pedophiles and still allowed to operate host homes. In fact one of them always required hugs first thing in the morning and before bed from every "phaser" in the home. Straight knew all about this parents sickness but allowed them continual access to any number of children.
-
Sorry about the E lezli, I tend to fat finger when I type or just F it up all together by my poor spelling
-
I don't know which Straight you were in but we had one of those parents in Sarasota as well.

Media-fed or not, it's also a fact, however, I was joking.[/b] You're obviously defending Catholicism for whatever reason. I understand. I realize you weren't meaning to call me a "smoker" or "southerner" I get your point. I'm not trying to offend you, if I did, I apologize.
-
I wasn't offended, thanks for the apology anyway. Unfortunately that is a problem with this type of forum. Sometimes it's hard to know when the other person is being sarcastic or kidding or whatever. Anyway like I already said thanks for the apology, and the opportunity to have a "discussion" without it reverting to childish vulgarities and name calling. I shy away from logging in for that reason. All the personal attacks I can live without.
-
I understand why people choose to post anonymously, and it doesn?t bother me, I understand. If that?s how you feel comfortable, then more power to you.
I wanted to respond to the second part of your last post: I confessed to rape, while in Straight, (It happened when I was 13-15.) They never did a damn thing about that either. They did however, find a way to blame me for it.
Does anyone know the statute of limitations for child rape?
-
It varies from state to state Lezli. You can usually look up your states statues online.
In florida there is capital rape which has no statue of limitations.
-
It's 17 years in Texas.
