Student in antidepressant clinical trail commits suicide in Eli Lilly Lab
Traci Johnson was found hanging by a scarf from a bathroom shower rod in the Eli Lilly Laboratory for Clinical Research.
Traci was part of a clinical trial for a new drug called Duloxetine.
This clinical trial involved healthy volunteers and Traci had no history of mental illness.
It has now come to light that Traci is the fifth suicide to occur during trials of Duloxetine.
As a result, a board that oversees drug maker?s clinical trials has ordered Lilly to stop accepting new participants for the local trial.
About 1/5th of the participants in the trial Traci was involved in have quit the trial.
This story is being covered nationwide by dozens and dozens of TV stations and newspapers.
What makes this story so heart wrenching is perhaps the facts behind just who Traci Johnson was. She was only 19 years old and a former student of Indiana Bible College. After her father was laid off about six months ago, the family didn?t have enough money for Traci and her three sisters to stay in school. So Traci recently dropped out of Indiana Bible College and signed up for an Eli Lilly drug trial to earn enough money to go back to school.
Traci had no history of mental illness. She had been a youth leader within her church for years and was known to be a happy person.
