Does anyone know who registered this site. They use to be open to the public but have recently gone truly underground.

I don't know, Carey. But those are some damned cool people, eh?
We ought to be grateful that our government monopoly schools are such a failure. If today's 18 year olds could do arithmetic, they'd be out buying enough rope to hang everybody over 40.

Ginger, how do I go about determining who registered this site? I am pretty sure bkdelong use to post on this site and that it has suddenly gone truly underground. It is very important.

Carey, I just left a message by phone. What do you mean it's truely underground? I had no trouble reading it. Did they pick up and move somewhere else or something?
The moderators are listed at the top. Is that what you're looking for?

Thanks Anon. Does anyone know why they have gone underground with their discussion forum?

Hmm, according to this message on Barbelith's website, no anons need apply for membership.
-------------------------------------------------
Barbelith's membership policy is currently under review
Barbelth is yet again experiencing problems with membership. Because of these problems, we can no longer allow people to simply join the board through a registration procedure until better mechanisms are in place for dealing with situations like this.
So how do you join? At the moment, if you want to become a member of barbelith you have to either 1) get someone on the board who you know already to recommend you (they'll have to send 'Tom Coates' a private message asking for you to be added) or 2) e-mail tom [at] barbelith [dot] com asking to join the board.
Unfortunately, for a whole variety of reasons, if you want to join you'll almost certainly also have to demonstrate that you are who you say you are. This probably means that you will not be given entry to the board if you use any free webmail account like hotmail or yahoo mail... Only e-mail addresses that can be directly associated with a person at a company or academic institution will be considered
-------------------------------------------------
So who IS Tom Coakes?

Carey - what kind of discussion was going on relative to the teen help industry? Is the forum worth the trouble of writing Coates for permission to join????
-
I have written to Tom requesting to join...but I have not heard back from him.
Yes, their was discussion on this site regarding one of the WWASP programs. If I am not mistaken they went underground about the same time that the PUREst quit posting on this site. Is there a connection? I am not sure.

Carey
Why do you care?
What is the significance?
-
Carey, if you wander around the site some I think you'll find a general mindset and attitude of people not too likely to be swayed by that kind of silliness. Sounds to me asif they're having spam problems or database expansion problems. But I doubt there's a connection to the WWASP discussion. That discussion is still there.

How come I can't find that discussion?

Cause it hasn't had a new post since like July sometime. But it's in there. If you search on tranquility it'll turn up. (everyone could stand to find a little tranquility, eh?)

Could you give me the link? Do you already have a password and user name? I can't get past not being a user.

Oh, yeah I did log in when it was a free-for-all. The link at the top of this thread works, unless they've made it readable only by members. Want me to post something for you?

Holy sheep shit, Carey! I think maybe you're right! I'll ask.
From a moderator around the end of September.
"We have had a number of people who are either admittedly or apparently mentally ill, and appear to compulsively return under new usernames to continue whatever behaviour caused them to be banned in the first place (e.g. posting child abuse threads during which they agree with themselves under multiple usernames). If contacting their ISPs doesn't change matters, these people have their real-world locations tracked down and the organisations which operate the computers concerned are informed. "

Here's the message I got. The last statement is curious. Sounds like membership is limited to companies and academics. Was there a discussion about the THI there?

Yeah, I'm looking through a lot of discussion on admin and moderation problems. Aparently, a troll or two has been getting under people's skin in a big way over there so they're circling the waggons. Not sure it has to do with the TB posting or not. But I did send a PM asking one of the mods (or now maybe former mods?)

It sure is odd. I have requested membership but I have not gotten any kind of a response.

Well, based on the conversations I read last night, looks like a very tight-knitt community experiencing some upheaval. The site never was dedicated particularly to juvenile treatment issues. They cover everything from the Büsh state visit to Buckingham to magick to gay rights.
After all, I'm pretty sure that the troll(s) in question hit the site long before the TB story and the community in general is just not all that interested in the story at this point. That's their prerogative. If they want to go private, then they will.
May your days be joyously challenging and your words artfully true.
