-

-
inside edition is known for breaking the news for cnn headline as well, this kid is not stopping until the worlds eyes are on the abuse wwasp has committed!
-

-
:nworthy: its about time someone exposed wwasps abuse worldwide.
-
look, he realy is on the headlines ...
http://insideedition.com/headlines.htm (http://insideedition.com/headlines.htm)
-
Not sure if we can consider Inside Edition a national headline. Isn't more of a rag magazine show? Now give us 20/20, 48 Hours, Dateline etc. now that is national.
I still believe that it is all good. Any negative exposure or exposure is great. Wake up these parents. Just wish it was a better show. Soon enough I understnad.
-
But Inside Edition says that they are interviewing the "American Owner"!?!? No Student interviews mentioned. :???:
-
you wanna see "student" interviews. go to http://www.ryanfraidenburgh.com (http://www.ryanfraidenburgh.com) and see the pictures of interviews for yourself.
-
Ryan is gonna say it how it is, period.
WWASP cant pay this kid off, he is gonna use whatever resource he has to expose WWASPS abusive prisons worldwide.
-
This is not about Ryan. Inside Edition had an interview with Narvin a few months ago and has been talking with MANY former students and parents. Ryan may be the poster child, but they talked with many others and heard their stories.
-
the inside edition IS on ryan, yes they do talk about other survivors but its all based on his story, just like the new york times article was.
-
Why can't (or won't) Ryan promote himself on Fornits instead of relying upon anonymous sources whose posts only make him look less then credible and frankly, shamelessly self-absorbed?
:silly:
-
maybe you forgot theres a ton of people who support him in his efforts instead of people like you sitting on your ass talking about him.

Nice try. God, you people are lame.

What's lame is Ryan pretenting to be an anonymous fan of himself.

I like Ryan, he's a cool kid, from a peer's point of view. I think you people should think about the fact that he's like 16, dude. Could you imagine being 16, and waking up one day to find you were about to be a movie star? I think you'd be pretty psyched? That's the vibe I get from him. I do think a lot of him is about the fame and whatnot. I wish it was me in his position because I actually would be in it for the cause. I don't think you guys should be concerned about Ryan himself, it's his story that is going to make waves. He just needs to keep it consistent....

-
Where did the link to the show say Ryan would be promoting his new movie by sensationalizing his story? I missed it.
-
Where can I find the NY Times story about Ryan? If someone has it, can they cut & paste it here or tell me where to look on Fornits to find it? Thanks for your trouble!!

Parents, Shopping for Discipline, Turn to Harsh Programs Abroad
By Tim Weiner, The New York Times
May 9, 2003
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ENSENADA, Mexico - Ryan Fraidenburgh was 14 when he was brought here shackled, kicking and screaming.
Two men carrying handcuffs and leg irons came for him at his mother's home in Sacramento, Calif., shoved him into a van and bound him hand and foot. They drove him 12 hours south, over the Mexican border, into a high-walled compound near here called Casa by the Sea.
"It was nighttime," Ryan recalled. "I look around and I see kids sleeping on cement. I was really, really scared. The big honcho, Mauricio, said, `You don't speak English here.' I didn't know how to speak Spanish."
Ryan quickly learned the rules: stay silent, be compliant, don't look up, don't look out the window, don't speak unless spoken to. The punishments for breaking the rules included solitary confinement, lying on the floor in a small room, nose to the ground, often for days on end.
Ryan was not a criminal. He was only skipping school, his parents said in telephone interviews. But in August 2000, they said, in the middle of a bitter divorce and custody battle, they decided to send him away to Casa by the Sea, which calls itself a "specialty boarding school" for behavior modification.
Like hundreds of other parents, the Fraidenburghs made their choice largely on the basis of a glossy brochure and a call to a toll-free number in Utah. They came to regret their choice.
The idea of sending a child to such a program in Mexico was unheard of a decade ago. But in the United States, behavior-modification programs and boarding schools for troubled youths have faced increasing legal and licensing challenges over the past few years.
More and more are moving abroad - some to Mexico, Central America or the Caribbean - where they operate largely under the regulation radar and where some employ minimum-wage custodians more than teachers or therapists, say government officials, education consultants and clinical psychologists.
The behavior-modification business is booming at Casa by the Sea, on Mexico's Pacific Coast, the largest of 11 affiliated programs with roughly 2,200 youths, about half of them in Mexico, Costa Rica and Jamaica. The programs are run by a small group of businessmen based in St. George, Utah, under the banner of the World Wide Association of Specialty Programs and Schools, or Wwasps, and Teen Help, the programs' main marketing arm.
Over the past seven years, local governments and State Department officials have investigated Wwasps-affiliated programs in Mexico, the Czech Republic and Samoa on charges of physical abuse and immigration violations. The Mexican program, in CancĂșn, and the Czech program closed, and their owners left those countries saying they feared unjust charges. The Samoan program cut its affiliation with Wwasps.
Ken Kay, the president of Wwasps, would not allow a reporter to visit Casa by the Sea; Dace Goulding, the program's director, declined to answer any questions. But Mr. Kay, responding to inquiries in writing from his office in Utah, said no charge of abuse had ever been proven against any of the programs in any court.
"We are about getting families back together," he said in a written statement. "We are not for everyone, and there are very few but vociferous critics of not just us but any youth intervention." He described many of the program's critics as parents who feel they have been "manipulated, brainwashed or duped" or who are battling through divorce and taking their anger out "by making us look terrible."
In telephone interviews, eight teenagers who were formerly in Casa by the Sea described a system in which the youths try to ascend six "levels" through a system of rewards and punishments, including being sent to "R and R," a small, bare isolation room, often for days on end. Discipline, not education, was the rule, they said.
For Laura Hamel, 17, of Vienna, Va., who counts herself as a success story, it was a slow two-year ascent to graduation in March. She said she was demoted from Level 3 back to Level 1 after giving a weeping, lonely friend a hug and a kiss on the cheek at Thanksgiving. Affection of that kind is forbidden.
A youth who rises to Levels 4, 5 and 6 can become a "junior staff member" and "participate in the discipline process" against lower-level youths, Casa's contract with parents says.

go to his web site, i think theres links to his storys on the media page.

Thanks to the 2 anons who answered my question about the NY Times article. Now that I have read it, I will be more knowledgeable about the issues at hand when they are discussed/debated on the Inside Edition show.

Its about time wwasps abusive organization is exposed. The parents get more then what they bargained for. Ryan is one of very few who never gave up, as a mother of my own kids its hard to see so many victims out there Most kids never get the chance to be in a a feature film, national interviews, and the front page of the ny times, but i certainly commend this kid for the efforts he has put in.

Ryan is NOT the first kid to speak out on national television or in mainstream newspapers and magazines and all this hype surrounding him and his association with a commercial venture is so plainly self-serving, it is disgusting. Tell Ryan he needs to get over himself if he expects to be taken seriously as the spokesperson for "so many other victims out there" ....

He's certainly the first I've ever heard of to bring this kind and quality of attention to the issue. Go Ryan!!!

I just want to know why the guy changed his statement on his website relative to how and why he got involved with Coldwater in the first place. Seems to me he (or someone else on his behalf) changed the statement not long after Carey began raising serious questions about his credibility, apparently with good reason. Personally, I think the kid is very talented from a creative standpoint and should be commended for his effort in helping to promote a movie vis a vis his very cool website.

Why? I'd love it if someone would pay me as an artistic consultant. Every day, I make my money by helping people create and maintain effective websites. While I don't mind doing the ones to advertise shoes, I get a lot more enjoyment out of ones like http://JonathanGullible.com/ (http://JonathanGullible.com/) and http://ADrugWarCarol.com/ (http://ADrugWarCarol.com/) We hope both of these will one day turn huge profits. But, for the time being, we all enjoy the projects and we're not starving. I'm very satisfied with that.

Melissa, I just watched the documentary ad. I don't have a problem with this at all. I envy Ryan, though. Most of our parents had a pretty good idea what was going on, though they deny knowledge of some of the more over-the-top incidents. And they entheusiastically supported it; some of them do to this day.
I know you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard was not what I meant.

I dont see the big deal, i see a kid who went through hell and is changing a bad experience into something good. All of you people forget that hes a surivor just like anyone else, and we should be happy someone has gone this distance. We should be glad he was even accepted to expose wwasps abuse. Just like someone else said on this board,
"It takes a thousand voices to tell one story"
well its obvious whos story that is.
He is in this for the cause

NOT! He's changed his story to suit the media and he's gonna make big bucks doing this. If he is on Inside Edition, you can bet that he'll be promoting himself and his fiction movie based very loosely on his experience. He's helping himself, in my opinion, but I'll wait and see what Inside Edition looks like.

He might be helping himself but keep in mind he is exposing wwasp

WWASP has been exposed numerous times in both the print and broadcast media long before Ryan came along. The truth is, it is very likely they will survive the lastest batch of negative publicity, generated by the closure of Dundee and perhaps, even benefit from it, as they have done in the past. It is the nature of the beast in an industry driven by PARENT demand.

you can only beat teens for so long until the law catched up with you.
All there doing is sugar coating the words to abuse teens in treatment.
There robbing these teens life in exchange for robbing there parents money. The government will get you.

WWASPS HAS GOTTON AWAY WITH ABUSE FOR OVER 7 YEARS NOW, BUT THEY NOW FEAR BECAUSE THEY CANT SEE THE FUTURE OF WWASPS. IT MAKES ONE WONDOR HOW SOMEONE CAN FEEL GOOD GOING HOME TO THERE FAMILY EVERY NIGHT AFTER BEATING A TEEN AND LEAVING THE HUNDREDS OF KIDS ILLEGALLY INCARCERATED. TAKE THE TIME YOU DO HAVE TO SAVE EVERTHING YOU GOT, BECAUSE THERES PEOPLE BRINGING YOUR FRAUDULENT BUISNESS DOWN

i agree, these days are definatley not to wwasps advatnage. Theres a few people out there that are making sure wwasps is responsible for the numerous crimes they have committed.

One caveat (lector?) Although WWASP(S) may have only been established seven years ago, these same individuals have been doing essentially the same thing for a good many years prior to that.
One thing that seems a whole lot different is the number of parents who seem to have honestly not known wtf they were sending their kids into. I know there were a few of those at Straight. You could tell who they were when they wouldn't give a very impressive reeming to their kids at mic talk and then the kid would dissapear (get pulled). But, for the most part, Straight parents knew the program and entheusiastically supported it. Not that they knew the confessions the kids were forced to make were false or exagerated. But they certainly knew the fact that we were being strongly coerced to make them and a good bit about how they went about it.
I'm starting to think WWASP has made a major mistake in their mass marketing via pyramid or associates program. I think they're inadvertently letting in eye witnesses who are disinclined to go along with the abuse and they're structured financially so that they can't stop doing it. Come to think of it, it's a lot like heroin that way. They've ODd on their brilliant money grubbing scheme and now they're just going through their final throws and twitches.
Let's all try and keep it as public as possible. WWASP is NOT the only purveyor of abusive, sadistic TC behavior mod. Folks need to know what they're about so they'll see them coming.
If the natural tendencies of mankind are so bad that it is not safe to permit people to be free, how is it that the tendencies of these organizers are always good? Do not the legislators and their appointed agents also belong to the human race?

That describes all educational consultants more than parents helping other parents when their communities fail them. Educational consultants refer to programs they have only visited once or never visited at all. They get paid by both the school and the parents - hefty fees on both ends. Doesn't wwasp help the parents out with tuition when they refer other parents? Isn't it up to the wwasp admissions people to determine if the kid is an appropriate student placement? The parents don't do this, the admissions people do? You say they take "anyone" but that is not true.
-
What you say about Ed Cons is true. The Ed Con who refered my ex knew nothing about the facility, her own admission, but refered based on the "owner's reputation". She was very shocked, or appeared to be, to learn that they were operating without a license. A few other things caused her pause as well.
Parents refering for a fee. No better. At $1000+ a referal that puts referring parents in the same catagory. Based on ex-parents stories, it doesn't seem as referring parents know anymore about the day-to-day reality than Ed Cons.
-
According to Ryan's website, the documentary being filmed that tells his story and that of other victims, will be released as a special feature supplement on the HOME VIDEO/DVD version of Coldwater, The Movie. Hopefully, the movie will show clips to get people interested in buying the video/DVD version -- though the price is sure to be double that of a movie ticket. Personally, I understand the marketing concept here but wish the public didn't have to wait for the movie to be released in video/DVD format to get a dose of REALITY. This could take months and by that time, interest would surely wane (unless the class-action-lawsuit is filed or some other event takes place to revive interest in this topic). Just my thoughts ...

I'd say you know more than the Ed Cons regarding the school your son was in, but you have zero experience of wwasps...NOT the same thing. You are not an expert, however you would like us to believe you are by your posting of articles, quotes, etc.
A parents recommendation based on their long-term experience of wwasps, coupled with the parents kid that KNOWS everything from the inside, would be more than enough for me to get more information from the admissions folks. Do you know that most parents that do this give the new parent the free month? Yes, they do, so they never see a financial gain from helping another parent who was where they were.
-
Definitely can't say that about Ed Cons - they profit enormously from recommending a parent admit their child to the highest bidder. That's a fact? Right PURE?

Oh God, talk about self-promotion. This just keeps getting worse and worse. Please, try to look at the big picture, here, if you care at all about being taken seriously.

His parents may have good reason to believe he is telling the truth. After all, it was his father who had to pay a $60,000 ransom to get his son back. Is he a lying, manipulative, delinquent teenager too?
-
Obviously you believe the dad paid some sort of a ransom. Think about it. The tuition is 2100 a month, so the dad had to pay for 3 years??? Bullshit.

Why does Ryan F. not have a website anymore? What's going on?????

A major thrust of a lawsuit against WWASPS is that parents were defrauded, that they were told their children were going to get a quality education (Harvard and "Yail" have been used [anecdotally] as next-step colleges), their children would be able to receive quality therapy by licensed therapists (one Doc of questionable caliber, mostly not available, the rest a daily session of ripping new belly buttons by other children in the same boat), quality food prepared by left-over resort chefs (a Dundee parent posting just last week was specifically promised this benefit), quality time in off-site exotic locations (not available for a least a year, most likely a lot longer and offered next-to-never at that). The signing parents interested in this suit feel they were defrauded of their money, meant to be spent to enhance their childrens' lives. They feel abused, played for suckers. They are mad, hurt, feel foolish, and...big thing here...they and their children feel poorer for the experience that nobody had in mind in the first place.
What a spin on the definition of abuse. I thought they were taking WWASP to court because their children were being beaten, drugged and hog-tied?
Can you post a copy of the enrollment agreements in which these promises were made. I would like to see where they were promised a "chef" at Dundee. Spots you have got to be kidding about what you have just posted.
Sounds to me like Carey was right months ago when she used the term to describe these people as "dumb ass parents." Sounds like these "dumb ass parents" are starting to sing a different tune. Why, did they lie about having evidence that will prove that WWASP and its owners are child abusers?
So it has been all about money. Money for those "dumb ass parents" who did not get the results they were looking for.
A major thrust of a lawsuit against WWASPS is that parents were defrauded,
So scare them with accusations of abuse? Make everyone think they are child abusers so that you can coerce them into settling for something less? What a proud group of "dumb ass parents." I sure am glad I don't belong to that group.
Spots, you say "a major thrust of a lawsuit against WWASP is that parents were defrauded." That is probably the most accurate truthful statment you have made to date. I mean afterall if there has been abuse as you all claim, why should that be what the suit is about. That is only the pain the kids had to endure. What the parents want to get straightened out is their monetary loss. They were defrauded. That is pitiful. I feel for you and your cohorts. You all sure have put a spin on this case. Why would any parent considering placement in a WWASP program think you all have ever been telling the truth. Most of us know the story about the boy who cried wolf. Do you? "
Anon, you raise some interesting questions. Why would the plaintiffs want to publicize reaching a potential settlement as highly controversial as this one sounds like it could be, if they don't have to?
