Southeast Journeys
Welcome to Southeast Journeys, an experiential academic alternative for adolescents and young adults ages 13-20 with Asperger's Syndrome, High-Functioning Autism, and similar spectrum disorders. We focus on improving social awareness and interaction, independence, and academic self-motivation. In addition to specialized classroom time, our small learning groups (8:2) take part in wilderness and learning trips that immerse them in multi-sensory lessons in natural and cultural history, geography, and scientific exploration. On and off campus, students practice independent living skills and group dynamics, and engage in focused social skills groups. The semester is a journey that enables students - who may have struggled in more traditional environments - to seek their full potential for life success.
Academics: Southeast Journeys academic program is designed to help students with issues such as Asperger's Syndrome and Nonverbal Learning Disorders excel in a learning environment that understands and supports their needs. With small learning groups, an integrated curriculum and knowledgeable staff, students receive the personalized attention and academic structure to reach new academic achievements, while earning credits or a diploma.
Social Development: Social skills development is integrated into the Southeast Journeys Program on a daily basis. In addition to the structured curriculum of the Social Skills Class during the school day, small group living offers many teachable moments on cooperative living, age-appropriate communication, and problem-solving. Residential staff lead insight-oriented group discussions to work through daily issues. Students also learn budgeting, scheduling, nutrition, healthy living and personal responsibility.
Experiential Activities: Learning and wilderness trips are an integral piece of Southeast Journeys. Our experiential trips allow students to experience hands-on learning based on subjects they are studying in the classroom. Participating in travel helps our students learn to generalize social skills in different venues. In past years, our students have explored the cultural roots and unique ecosystems and geology of the Appalachian Mountains; learned traditional skills such cider-pressing, craft-making, storytelling, and gem-mining as we followed the path of the early Appalachian explorers and the native people who struggled to live together; and taken the ridgeline north to witness the beginning of the presidential campaign and the ongoing political process in Washington, DC and explored the coastal ecology of the Cumberland Island, GA.

Really, just stop. It's a fucking obituary for fuck's sake.
I swear program people have absolutely no shame or conscience.
-
You slam programs so I will slam this obituary!
-
You slam programs so I will slam this obituary!
So you're basically a childish asshole. Okay then. Again, good to know. At least you're finally admitting to being a program shill.
This is all attention whoring. It's like a little kid shitting on the dinner table and then screaming, "look at me, look at ME!".
-
So you're basically a childish asshole.
Your are 100% correct Anne!
-
At least you're finally admitting to being a program shill.
I am a a program shill Anne! You are 100% correct again.
-
Are you going to blame this on the program Anne?
Are you going to NOT blame this on the program?
It's not like that sort of thing (a kid killing himself after being traumatized in a program) has never happened before...
What are you doing here?
-
At least you're finally admitting to being a program shill.
I am a a program shill Anne! You are 100% correct again.
And you make such a fine example. I'm sure now people will really trust your opinion. That of someone who is so low-class as to shit all over a simple obituary.
-
Talk dirty to me Anne you're on fire now!
-
May the Peace Mike sought, that which is inevitable, be found. And comfort to his family.
@Kirstin...For shame, how pathetic of a human being are you? Fine, your an advocate of programs that historically have brought misery on countless lives, family members and loved ones, literally 10's of thousands of people...Its a twisted thought, but so be it
To say that because we poo-poo Straight like programs, you are going to poo-poo his memory, his family, his wife, his children. None of which had anything to do with the program. And your going to poo-poo a human being for suffering...that apparently you endourse...just how sick are you?
How pathetic! Your compassion for those that suffer is lacking a fundemental piece of humanity and the ability to have empathy for human beings. In short there is a word for you, Sociopath.
Perhaps when your obituary is released, we shall gather at your grave site, urinate and deficate on your grave in celebration, the world is less one mindless minion.
As a Buddhist, I am to have compassion for people like you. Thanks, you have given me something for me to work on...such is your condition.
