In explaining why he filed for bankruptcy, Gluhareff also blamed the school?s closure on the actions of Lisa Grant, a former counselor for the school, who Gluhareff said ?kidnapped? four boys from the school on April 18 and incited a riotous atmosphere.
?That inappropriate behavior turned our school upside down,? Gluhareff told U.S. Bankruptcy Court Trustee Andrew Goldstein on Monday. ?(The Department of Social Services) found nothing wrong. There is nothing to the accusations.?
Gluhareff said the students began acting irrationally, threatening to burn the school down, and to kill him and his wife, Elizabeth.
?We didn?t sleep for three days,? he said, adding that Halifax County deputies were dispatched to the school and his residence.
Goldstein noted that Gluhareff and the school had general, unsecured debt of over $1.4 million, and inquired about the school?s performance in past fiscal years. The school earned $2,275,000 in fiscal year 2002-03, and $2,831,000 during the previous period.
The school?s tuition was $49,000 a year.

McCollum asserted that Gluhareff billed her for the tuition after her ex-husband had already paid it, adding that Gluhareff insisted that her ex-husband refused to pay.
?This is one of the most blatant examples of fraud,? she said.
McCollum said she anticipates having to sell her home to pay off the debt she accumulated as a result of making the tuition payment.
McCollum said her son ?lost his soul? as a result of his experience at Wellspring, and that he wants nothing to do with Christianity or God.

Troy ?Buddy? Martin, a Wellspring former employee, said he was never paid for his last few weeks at the school.
?Was there any reason I was not paid?? he asked. ?I worked.?
Gluhareff said Martin, like Grant, had caused problems and ?stirred up trouble,? a charge Martin denied.
Grant asked Gluhareff if she knew that the Virginia State Police had cleared her of all wrongdoing regarding taking the boys from the school, and that he was still under investigation.
?I have no comment on that,? Gluhareff answered.
Grant won a judgment against Gluhareff in Halifax County District Court on May 28, but said that $2,700 judgment has not been paid.

rev. bob gluhareff is a deceitful man that should have been exposed years ago. His practices of taking advantage of adults and children in their most venerable moments are not only deplorable, but also in this case probably illegal. His irresponsible actions and arrogant demeanor have gotten him sued several times in the past for allegations of fraud and sexual misconduct. The public is recognizing that people that hide evil deeds behind the cloak of righteousness (reverend, therapist, and business consultant) can no longer linger in the shadows but will be brought to the fullness of light and exposed. Victims of rev. gluhareff should no longer be intimidated and come forward with their stories so that no one else will be hurt. He has sown the wind, may he reap the whirlwind.

Not too sure how old this thread is since I am not a member here, but I was an attendee at Wellspring Academy, I can agree with the above poster that Mr. Bob Gluhareff is a fraud and is a total asshole. Going to Wellspring Academy was the worst two year of my life, and this was the general consent of almost all of the students that went there. Bob decieved our parents, and us, so that he could make a buck. I cannot tell you all how grateful the school shut down. To hell with Bob Gluhareff.

Bob Gluhareff is a lier and a very evil man. I was attending that school for 2 years before it closed down. i was there the day it closed down. Lisa Grant did us a favor by taking some of us away from that place. Bob was not threatened in any way, shape or form. He decieved many parents, just to dip into their family savings. We were heared like cattle and flonted at his own expense. he is a lier and a thief

If you were involved with Wellspring and have anything you'd like to say to these investigators, please contact them.  The state police are focusing on whether or not Bob Gluhareff delivered on his numerous promises to parents, and many financial issues.
 
Bob Gluhareff, Cindy Thomas and Jessie Diamond are all licensed professional counselors in North Carolina.  Their professional conduct is covered by that state's counseling board.  Numerous ethics complaints have been filed against them, which are currently under investigation.  If you believe you were treated unethically by Bob, Cindy or Jessie,please file a complaint.  Were you lied to or threatened?  Was your therapeutic privacy violated?  Were you subjected to their "interventions" and put in isolation, which they called "in school suspension"?  If so,please contact the NC Counseling Board.
 
No one on the entire Wellspring counseling staff was licensed to practice in Virginia, where the facility is located.  The Virginia Dept of Health Professions is investigating.

The only investigation that has been completed is that of the Virginia Dept of Social Services into allegations of child abuse at Wellspring.  Bob Gluhareff was found to have abused children at Wellspring and has lost his first appeal of that determination.  He has advanced to the second appeal level and awaits his next chance to dispute the finding.

Do your part.  Contact the above agencies and tell your Wellspring experiences.

kids, parents, former "employees" of wellspring- please help bring this  man to justice. he has hurt so many people and will continue to do so until he is stopped. so many have tried to stop him, but he is evil. evil fights hard, but he will get his. don't let him get away with it anymore!!!! some of us aren't allowed to talk about it because of legal reasons, but you have no reason not to talk. he can't hurt you anymore so don't be afraid. there are so many people out there in your corner.

Wellspring's bankruptcy is in no way the fault of the counselor.  I was there.  I was a teacher.  The handwriting that something was grossly wrong was on the wall for a long time.  One of the posts here refered to Bob as Rev. Gluhareff.  I have to question that title.  With enough money I can send in a matchbook cover and receive the same title.  There is a big difference between a true pastor and a fake pastor.  I question Bob's credentials.

Ok, first all the news about Lisa, its all BULLSHIT. Lisa Grant was my counsler, she is the best counsler I've ever had. I had Jessie (who amounted to jack), And Bob, (yes he did have counselies, he was a very bad one at that. Bob manipulating my parent out of more money than 99% of any other parent on that campus. Bob has screwed parents (and students for that matter) royally. He thought he could get away with it. I guess it all came back on him. I was shall I say one of the more rebelious kids at this school. This did not stop stop the physical abuse from Dave Glueharff, Joe Eggelston, Sean Kelly, And Bob himself. Because of a situation I have had permenant neck problems ever since. I don't want to see a charge for all this. I want to see Bob go to a Federal Penatentery for all this. He has scamed millions. If he shall get off of everything, he is spitting in the face of any government autority. This includes the judge who may think he is not guilty in all this. I was screwed cause "Wellspring Academy." Look at how we lived for instance. The dorm I was in had black mold growing in it. The one who decided to cover it up with white paint and let it slid was paid to a ridiciouls extent. I worked in the kitchen, the kids were I would say malfeed about the last 4 weeks. I served the shit, I know how much we were suppose to give out 85% of the time we ran out. I know that the meat we had cause a great sickness that was spread out in the dorms one night. It's amazing no one got sick from the spoiled meat. The schooling, I believe it was one teacher that was certified to teach. You cannot be taught from someone who cannot teach. The "principle" was not even certified to be in her position. Shall I explain more? I believe not because when he goes to jail that will be his consequence. Would it not have been for Lisa, I would never have gotten out of "Wellspring." Bob was very mad at Lisa when I left. My parents were scamed by Bob. I still think they are. Thank you Bob, because of you me and my parents will never be able to live in the same house because of "Wellspring." The rumors about Lisa helping in getting the school shut down, are bullshit. If one counsler could have brought that school down then the kids could have a long time before Lisa. There were no roits ever at "Wellspring," if there had been it was probably stopped due to a threat from a few staff. So I shall end here, Bob you are a pitifull piece of shit. When you go to jail have fun, they WILL LOVE you.

You lunatics lock people up with no legal recourse at all to have a responsible, disinterested person evaluate whether the kid really needs to be locked up or not, and then you abuse them and say it's *their* fault.

Joe - doesn't matter which program a kid is in, yours, or others - it's easier to cry abuse than to do the inner work to make a better life for themselves.  Some would rather be in the juvenile system, or be a runaway, or be in control of their parents, than do the hard work.  Hell, these kids abuse themselves, programs don't.  Every once in awhile you might have a staff person that doesn't like their job and could do something, but they are always caught and fired, and this doesn't happen very often.  The school teachers in the school system have said and done worse to kids that don't fit the mold.  That's why a lot of the kids feel like shit anyway.  It's usually not the parents, but the teachers.

Teens are defiant, they are wired that way.  It's when people outside the family tell the parents their kid is "defective" in some way because they don't like their class, or their grades are low.  Some even go to the extreme of telling the parents to put their kid on ADD meds to be compliant.  That's abuse and it happens a thousand times a day to thousands of kids.

Thank goodness there are programs that see these kids as worthwhile and good and help them find that out for themselves.  I know nothing of Wellspring, but it sounds like the same old same old from a program I am familiar with.  

My heartfelt acknowledgment to you for the life you have created for yourself.

What's up, I'm a former "student" of this former "school" and I can confidently say it was the biggest fraud I've ever been a part of.  Of course, loathe to say, I was on the undesirable part of the fraud.  I find it downright disturbing to hear about Bob's 2.5 million dollar annual revenue.  The kids lived in 3 small trailers, and 1 somewhat nicer lodge.  I was only there for 11 months, and as more kids came (thus more money) I saw nothing but degradation in our quality of life (food, housing, discipline), BUT I saw 4 or 5 staff members BUY NEW SUVS.  Calling this place an institution of learning (Academy?) is a flat out lie.  I all but dropped out of highschool half way through my junior year, and I knew far more about the topics these "Teachers" were "teaching".  I was less prepared for college after being at Wellspring than I was before.  At least my teachers gave me C's for not doing a damn thing in public school, not A+'s.
Can we talk about our "College counselor" for a minute?  Sure, let's do that.  There were a select few of us who wanted to go to college after this place, and even fewer of us who had the brainpower to actually do it.  However, I for one didn't know anything about picking the right college.  I'd never thought about it, I didn't know where to start.  Valorie Cook, the ever vigilant financier cum career counselor, extended herself so far as to hand out college brochures from her bookshelf.  That's it.  The criteria for what brochures to hand out? "what state do you want to be in?"  And what about scholarship?  I was a National Merit Scholarship finalist, I had a 1330 SAT score, she didn't even mention scholarships to me.  I could have gotten a free ride through college.
After shoveling out 50 grand for this school, my parents were in no mood to pay for my college experience.  I lost 10,000 dollars going to
college.  My money.  Valorie (or was it my parents?) convinced me to enroll in an advanced Calculus class my first semester, seeing as how I did so well in the "precalculus" class I took at wellspring.  I've taken a class like that before.  I was in seventh grade, it was called algebra.  Needless to say, the calculus did not go so well.  Now, I can't blame my failure at college entirely on Wellspring, that would be juvenile.  But it's perfectly reasonable that a 50,000 dollar, one year education should be at least equal to a free one?  Am I right?  No?  Ok, maybe that's that "New World" thinking that Bob was talking about: Advertise, promise, charge.  Notice it doesn't include deliver.

My son went to Wellspring for 18 months.I am not surprised by its closing and  I agree with most of the earlier posts. What I saw was the good caring counselers would not put up with Bob's B.S and went elsewere. My question for kids who attended Wellspring is- what about Sharron? Was she in on the fraud or was she duped along with the parents ?
 I got the impression she really cared about the kids and wanted to help them . I am curious  about your comments.

So all the staff at Wellsping were underpaid and Bob was raking in the bucks! Bob's problem goes a lot deeper than fraud and money...he is a meglomaniac who played on parent's fears and student's insecurities. My wife and I have forgiven Bob for his manipulation and deceit, so I'm not writing this to defame or slander anyone. The record needs to be set straight...on all accounts and Bob should face legal and professional scruitinity. My observation was that Bob was a master salesmen: your best friend when he needed your money, but also the most cruel / mean-spirited person one could ever imagine from an Edgar Allen Poe poem or the tales of the Marquis de Sade.

His fanatical control...even down to setting a lighting mood for the  Saturday night " devotion sessions " ( his chair / throne was in the spotlight in a darkened room ) ... is/was so extreme that it cannot be exaggerated.
Now why would a parent, who recognized this , ever allow his/her son(s) to be a part of this charade? A fellow parent said it best for me...he said he didn't have his son enrolled for Bob's benefit...or because of Bob..but rather because his son was depressed and suicidal...and he felt his son was " safe " at Wellspring! No fear of a midnight call from the police that his son was dead...or " missing ". He got his son home as soon as possible...against Bob's protests that he was putting his son's life in jeporday

Contrary to what a few posters have said...we parents did not throw away our sons away like garbage...far from it...many of us sacrificed...even to the point of breaking.

Unlike Bob who filed bankrupcy, we paid our bills even if it meant taking a second or third mortgage.

I can personally attest to having paid more than $65,000 without dipping into my richly filled coffers...but from my hard-earned life savings!

Even now after several years, I'm not back to where I was before Bob's scam! And the worse part is that Bob ( and Chris ) didn't fulfill their part of the contract. When Bob went off the deepend in early 1999 with the rapid growth, military style marching and his run for public office...he put my son in jail! For what? Assaulting Chris & Bob! I don't think so.

Bob inferred many times that he had the local police, judges, and authorities in the palm of his hand...so you had better not contest his judgement of what was best...or maybe things would get worse...maybe even prison!

We arranged the release of our son and have been suffering since with the psychological effects on our son...lack of respect for authority and rejection of God!

Bob is a liar, thief, and a fraud. He will stand before God on judgement day..just like all of us will. May God have mercy on his soul!

I'm not including my name simply because it really doesn't matter...not because I've got an axe to grind or am hiding from other's criticisim. Let me sign off as a grateful parent who got his son out of Bob's evil influence " in-time ".

I have heard that bob and Sharon moved off the farm and into their sons house near Danville. You can look up where they went to bankruptcy court over a small part of the land. This was several months ago and I have not heard any resent information other than the office he maintains in Raleigh. I know in the past he has managed to pay people off, threaten, and sue anyone that tells the truth about his wicked ways. Then when things quiet down he reemerges with a bigger ego believing that he will never be held accountable, and continuing this vicious cycle of predatory behavior. I do remember at graduation 2002, at Wellspring Academy, US Senator of Virginia, George Allen and Virginia Attorney General, Jerry Kilgore both spoke about "Bob's program could be used as a great model for the commonwealth of Virginia".  What are these two politicians saying now?  Bob does seem to surround hinself with influencial people, a cause for concern? As I understand it, the former Wellspring Academy property was auctioned off into 3 parcels.  I don't believe Bob bought any of them.  Kind of hard to do when you're bankrupt but then again, you know Bob.

I'm very interested in hearing any details on Bob starting a new facility.  If anyone knows anything about it please post.  This guy needs to never have that kind of opportunity again.  Perhaps he's trying to get a job at Enron.

The Wellspring Academy property was sold at public auction May  2004 in 5 parcels.  2 parcels were bought by lumber companies.  1 parcel was bought by a local "land baron" with no apparent association to Bob Gluahreff.  1 parcel was bought by a man named Charles Grantham and the last parcel was bought by 6 people together.  They are 3 married couples named Charles and Sharon Ballard, Robert Jr and Wanda Potts, and Steven and Lori James.  The 5 parcels sold for $797,000 total.  

June 28, 2004 Charles Grantham "sold" half of the land he bought in May to Charles Ballard and Robert Potts Jr for the recorded price of $10.  

August 6, 2004 he "sold" the other half of the land he bought in May to Charles Ballard and James Mercer for the recorded price of $10.

As of today, nearly 200 acres of land including the house and buildings and 17 acres across the road are owned by:
Charles and Sharon Ballard
Robert Jr. and Wanda Potts
Steven and Lori James
James Mercer.

Cindy Thomas's house is vacant and for sale for $225,00.

This information is recorded at the Halifax County Courthouse.

Charles is at least 85 years old and has been in declining mental and physical health for 10 years or more. He has cerebral palsy.

Where did Mr Ballard get money to by his part? (Not a wealthy man) Bobs hidden money?

I am a former patient/employee of Wellspring from 1995-1996.  I just found out through a collection agency that someone from Wellspring took out a corporate cell phone account using my social security number.  The account was opened on July 19, 2001 and ended in February 2004. Now my credit is flagged, and I'm trying to close on a home loan within the month.  Has this happened to anyone else?  If not, it may in the future.  Be vigilent and check your credit report often.  I am livid and in a rage over this.  I had put that part of my life behind me for 8 years now until yesterday.  This fraud is being investigated, and I will not rest until a prosecution is made.  Did they really think they would get away with this and that I wouldn't find out eventually?

gosh, what a bunch of hogwash has been going on for months about Bob - at least get your facts straight folks.  Charlie Ballard WAS Sharon's father - he died of Parkinsons/Alzheimers 5 months ago - Charles Ballard is Sharon's brother who is a land developer and he and some others bought a portion of the property to develop and build homes, etc.
Believe me, I DO know what's going on and it's a shame that so many untruths have been posted these past months.

Thank you for clarifying who owns what. Now are you saying that Charles Ballard (brother of Sharon Gluhareff) who lives in Florida bought the land to develop in rural Virginia?  OK
Why was there a strange money dealing with land and bankruptcy court $797,000 total, to being sold to Sharon?s Gluhareffs brother for $10, or is this also not true?
You can see why there is questions? regarding this matter considering Bob owes clients parents hundreds of thousands of dollars and is claiming that he is ?unable? to repay them. And he has been seen bragging how he was able to manage to keep the land.

It is a shame that there have been untruths printed about this whole situation, but the real shame lies on Bob Gluhareff, for continuing to be arrogant, stubborn, and unwilling to repent for sins committed. The people posting on this and other websites complaining of Bobs misdeeds are not out to get him, but quit the contrary, They (WE) have been hurt and taken advantage of personally by him so we write not out of hate but out of pain. We need to express our pain for ourselves and our children and in doing so warn others so they do not get hurt in the same way.

If you are personally involved with Mr. Gluhareff then in your heart you know I am speaking the truth and you have seen him hurt the people he claims to want to help. Every time through the years (been sued 4 times fraud+ sexual misconduct that I know about) He will aggressively try to intimidate the victim with litigation (suing them+any friends family) Then claim to the world that he is the one being victimized. People that continually hurt others create patterns of abuse and in this case the patterns are clear. If you chose to blindly believe that Bob is the victim and do nothing to help those he has devastated then you are equally responsible, and will answer for that in this life or the next. At some point you have to ask the critical questions that lead to the truth. Why are all these people ?lying? about Bob? What do they stand to gain? What is the truth? Why does this continually happen to bob through out the years?
At some point you will see the answer Robert Surge Gluhareff is an abusive man that society needs to be protected from.

thanks for writing - first off, get Bob's name correct - it's Robert SERGE Gluhareff.
Yes, I am personally involved and have known him for many, many years and do know much the public doesn't know.  First off, Sharon's brother had to pay almost $800.000 for a portion of the property and it belongs to the brother and some other folks who are hoping to build a home development -a gated community on some of the prior Wellspring property.
Do you have any idea how many scholarships Bob and Sharon gave away over the years to kids who couldn't afford to come to Wellspring?  Try checking into that and you'll be surprised at their generosity.  I could go on and on but you won't believe me, I'm sure, so I do know that all of us will one day stand before Christ and will be accountable to each and every word/deed we did on this earth and yes, Bob will have to answer for many things, as we all do.  God bless you and I hope you can turn over your anger and pain to the Lord and realize that only HE will be doling out rewards and punishments.  God bless you sincerely.

Sharon for many many years.There are two sides to every story and mature people ought to realize such. Too much angry, untrue, foul mouthed and one sided stuff floating around on this site about Wellspring. Bob and Sharon helped many families and kids get their lives back in order without building up even a retirement fund for themselves. FORGET ABOUT A STASH! This I know beyond a doubt. In specific response to an earlier question about Sharon's sincerity....She is and always was the most genuine, loving all the kids, Christian in every act and deed, woman that ever graced the earth. Her heart breaks for the loss of oportunity to carry on this ministry. She was called "momma" for a very valid reason.Please know what you are talking about.. Thanks

Bob did not get one penny from the sale of the farm. It all went to the bankrupcy court as there was a mortgage on the place for almost twice what the sale brought in. You guys should really do your homework before you speculate and draw conclusions.

bob does not live on 4121 birch elmo rd.
bob is broke, making it, but broke. there was no stash, that he kept.  he is very very arrogant, and still acts like he owns the old wellspring farm, but he doesnt. he didn't recieve a penny for it.  he can't be half as smart as he thinks he is.  if he was he would of handled his money a lot differently.  like working on paying off some land or biuldings, etc.  before expanding his institution.  instead he mastered the art of financing more things, and made payments on everything.  he never really owned much.  but he acts like he does, b/c he is so cocky, and arrogant.  bottom line...he cannot manage money or the "wellspring institution" would not of shut down SO quickly, it was operating on a paycheck to paycheck basis.  that is why it shut down so quickly, when clients funds werent coming in.  the attitude that he is a big shot caught up with him.  the truth is there is wrong on both sides.  there is no doubt that bob and wellspring helped many people, there was no abuse, just angry punk kids who needed someone to keep them in line, and they are mad because they were kept somewhere that didnt put up with stuff their parents did.  there is also no doubt that bob kept parents money, and it was wrong.  they will never get it back.  you cant get blood from a stone. the staff was way overpaid and everything was financed,  it was a disaster waiting to happen. an insitution with that much money coming in should not of crumbled that quickly, the $$ was not handled correctly...plain and simple. what is ironic, is that people pay bob to council him, when it is him who needs to be counciled

I'm so sorry that so many of you are in pain because of Bob Gluhareff.  He was once such a great counselor to kids.  I know, because I had him as a teacher/counselor in high school.  He listened to us when other adults would not.  He could always be counted on to be discreet, and honest in the advice he gave. He was a friend to those of us who were struggling with home lives that lacked guidance and sanity.  
I know I have not heard both sides, but I have heard enough.  I looked Bob up because now I have a daughter who is in need of a non-biased listening ear.  But thanks to all of you and the free flow of information online, I'll be looking elsewhere.  
What happened to you, Bob?  Where is the man I knew when I was a teen?

Not very many people knew what acctually went on behind scenes, I was one of few who had personal contact with numerous staff members on the fact of why wellspring closed.  I will not comment who nor when, I will say 99% of what has been said went on.  There is more stuff that went on that no student will ever know, I was one student who was able to gain acess to inside conversation between Bob and both his sons.  Most of the staff didnt even know what was about to happen to them, yes they all got paid great i will tell you.  I have seen payroll slips for every staff except Bob himself, whose slip was somehow "edited" out.  No one there made under 350 a week.  They kitchen people were the only ones who got paid cheap, that is the people who originally cooked the food.  Now how shall I say Dave, Jenny, and a few others were paid an extreme amount.  Bob paid the people who know most dirt the most.  I personally have been involved in a few wrong-doings, those of which I had my life threatened over by numerous staff, one of which said they would help me in court, now I know that all this Wellspring jargon is kicking up old dust, maybe it needs to be, he did wrong.  I've been in 12 different boarding schools, rehabs, hospitals, bootcamps, you name it.  I have never seen one like Bobs, it was the most unorgainized, unintelligent boarding school ive been to.  Not to bash Bob, where he sent me after the school closed was not to pleasing either, I guess thats why now I have 2 criminal charges on me, along with other bullshit that still haunts me, lucky I knew some people who could get me a job, if not id still be in the hole.  Bob was a great help at first, I left the school and then came back, it was even worse, 5 months after I got back, the school shut down, leaving me and my parent up shit creek, I couldnt live at home and Bob supposedly said the school would be open to "help kids" as long as he could and sharon would take over....  Its all been said and done now.  The event is gone, in the past, dont you wonder what the big man has to say about all this?  it seems most people want to know a few things and he wont talk without a lawyer.  I saw him after the school closed and he looked the other way, i also saw his son, who would not even speak to me, not even to say merry christmas.  what a big man he is. anyways i know the heats down now, maybe some how this can reach bob and he can comment and apoligize for all the wrong doings that have gone on.  farwell and goodbye to wellspring and all students who i became good friends with and then we all just up and left.

He did not take Jon "with him".  They were both told that they no longer have jobs with Birch Creek Plantation.  Bob was trying to ruin Birch Creek Plantation just as he did with Wellspring (by using funds unwisely).  He thought he was going to have the power and learned otherwise. They also "basically stole" items that they claimed as theirs from the new owners, selling things and keeping the money.  When the new owners bought the farm from the bankruptcy court they were kind enough to open it back up to them which their kindness cost them money as well.  If anyone else had bought the farm Jon and Bob would of had NO access to anything.  ::argue::

My parents sent me a link to this site. I was one of the first inmates at the farm. I don't have time to go into datails, but I was there for over 2.5 years.
It only took me 10 years to get over the anxiety problems I developed there, and they still bother me.
The good thing is, once I convinced my parents of the truth, we are closer than ever.

I'm not sure how often people keep up with this site, but one night I will sit down and share a  little.
I am happy to see that it wasnt all in my head, and now there is genuine proof for my parents!

Thank you for posting.  You'd be surprised who keeps up with this site, including all the agencies investigating Bob Gluhareff and the goings on at the former Wellspring Academy.

There is a bill in committee in the House of Representatives, HR 1738 End Institutional Abuse Against Children Act.  It was just introduced 2 weeks ago.  It proposes to regulate all these residential "teen help" facilities and attaches criminal penalties to abusing children at them.  Write your congressman and ask him or her to vote for this bill.  There are a lot of websites that will put an email through to your congressman.  I wrote mine last week and already got a written reply telling me he is "favorably inclined toward this legislation" and awaits the committee report.

I'm sorry for all of us who had a Wellspring experience.  What was it like early on?

I just discovered this site today while trying to find out what happened to Wellspring.  I was at Wellspring in the mid-90's as a patient and staff-member.  It was small then with only a handful of staff members and residents.  I never observed any of the bad behavior by staff or by Bob described and insinuated on this site.  I believe that Bob had a great concept... take troubled kids out of their tumultuous environment and bring them to an isolated farm for intensive counseling, farm work (Lord knows  today's kids need this),  and personalized education.  Maybe Bob was arrogant at times, but he had a lot of excellent qualities also.  Sharon was great, and had a loving spirit.  The food was excellent (maybe a little too fattening).   It was like a family.  As it grew slightly larger, things got slightly more  difficult.  I kept up with Wellspring only sporadically since 1997, but I am sure that such  tremendous growth inevitably led to even more chaos, because most of the kids were severely troubled.  I wish now that Wellspring had remained small.  I am sure there was plenty of blame to go around for its demise.
     I am sorry that so much controvery engulfed a place that brought me and others I knew such peace and piece of mind.

I agree with your comments.  Actually, I agree with a large majority of the comments listed on this web site.  I was a science teacher (for only several months)and it only took a few days to realize that Bob and his school was a fraud.  It does not surprise me that he would blame the Bankruptcy on a counselor.  He is not going to take any responsibility for his actions. Unfortunately, for Bob it is very possible that he will be forced to take responsibility. During the few months employed, I witness Bob constantly abuse the students and staff. I never was witness any physical abuse, however, verbal and mental abuse was very much present.  Extending this comment, Bob also would place blame on every parent for the reasons why the student's past behavior was so exceptional and because of the parent, the only choice remaining for the student was Bob's school or prison.  This was only when the parent(s) were not present.  What seemed so exceptional was a majority of the student's behavior was not exceptional but normal.  From an education stand, most students preformed well in the classroom and tested above average.  However, I was instructed (and I assume others were as well)that each student was to recieve a passing mark regardless of performance.  I would not followed the directive.  Finally, I was released by Bob because I would not agree to testify, in writing, that I was witness to a student breaking into the med locker and taking prescription medicine.  I was informed the student's was giving another student prescribe medicine by mistake.  The fact of the matter was, I never witnessed either act and therefore, was not going to testify otherwise.  Later that day a meeting was held with other staff members and I was released.  Once off the campus, Bob placed a stop payment on my paycheck.  I still have the canx check and would like to know who I can contact to fax a copy.

Bob and Sharon, sons, wifes and grandchildren still live in the vicinity. Bob's home looks over Birch Creek Development from the mountain side and he can watch the development happening.  Yes Sharon's brother is ONE of the new owners.  There are 6 NEW owners and Bob has NOTHING to do with it.  The first home is being built in the development as we speak.  Lots have been sold, ponds have been dammed and filled and roads are going in.  NO SCHOOL!! :wave:

I know this kid from volunteer work they did to help repair a local school- he seemed to be, out of all the boys that I met, the most well adjusted. Friendly, animated, and very excited about getting to go home. And then this comes up... somehow it doesn't make sense.
I might add that Chris has also decided that he is now Orthodox Jewish... kind of odd considering his extensive background in Christianity.
Were there any websites that documented physiological or physical abuse? I'm worried about the safety of the boys out on the "farm"

The girl's program shut down admist allegations from the girls regarding sexual misconduct on Bob's part. 2 girls (both under age) specifically accused Bob of having sex with them. One girl confided in her counselor, then promptly left. The other girl didn't tell the counselor until after she had left the farm.

On another note. Those of you who were at the farm in the early days - pre 1995 or 94 - Bob was a caring man. The farm was a great healing place. But then it changed. He got a taste of the power and the money that was easily gained through broken, vulnerable children and parents. This small taste got him consumed with how to get more. With each person he duped money from, with each person he manipulated, he got more bold and more addicted to the power and money. Each lie led to more lies and became harder and harder to cover. Many of these lies led to the need for more money (for payoffs to keep prior victims quiet). He is now out of control. He's gone crazy.

Near the end he had 90 some kids at that farm. They had inadequate counseling, were abused physically as well as emotionally, and living conditions were worse than a state prison - he didn't care about their emotional nor physical health. He cared about how much money he could get, and he got off on how easy it was to control and dupe the parents and staff. He and Cindi would joke and laugh about the parents after they left from a visit. It was appalling and disgraceful that a "minister" behaved the way he behaved.

So yes, it was good at one time. It's important to look at how the years have progressed - not just at one time period. It's really sad. It could have been so good and a great blessing for children, parents, and Bob. But Bob chose to follow the devil and to worship other gods (money/power) instead of Our Lord.

Our Lord won't allow this behavior. For those of you who have been hurt so badly by this monster, remember that. God is watching and knows what needs to be done. God's will be done!! I know it's hard, but be patient and pray for Bob to be stopped - that God stop him in His will, not ours. That's the key, to let God have our anger, our need for revenge, our will. You all are not alone. There are so many people praying for this situation. God is watching! God's will be done!!

I attended Wellspring in the mid 90's.  I was contacted last night by the Virgina US District Attoney's Office.  I can honestly say that my stay @ Wellspring was postive & nothing negative ever happened to me.  I am so so sorry to all those who were hurt by Bob G.  and his actions & Yes Sharon G. is a saint & I belive she did not know of Bob's evilness. If any crimal behavior occured while I was there, I didnt know anything about it.

What did you do to prevent him from doing the drugs that killed him? Or were you too busy perpetuating your own selfish behavior to notice? DANVILLE, Va. - The founder and former CEO of a now-defunct school for boys faces 36 federal charges related to his handling of school and personal funds.

Robert Serge Gluhareff was indicted July 25 on three counts of bank fraud, 25 counts of tax fraud, four counts of mail fraud, two counts of wire fraud, one count of false declaration and one count of money laundering, according to the office of U.S. Attorney John L. Brownlee.

The indictment, which was unsealed Friday, alleges that from 1999 to 2003, Gluhareff and Wellspring Academy ?repeatedly experienced serious financial problems and lacked sufficient money to meet expenses.?

It accuses Gluhareff of a number of schemes to obtain money, including writing and depositing checks on his personal accounts knowing that they would be dishonored; convincing parents to write tuition checks and then depositing the checks before the funds became available; and falsely promoting the school as having licensed counselors.

Gluhareff also is accused of selling the timber rights of

approximately 90 acres of land that had a lien on it, misrepresenting tuition payments as tax deductible ?scholarship donations,? and encouraging parents to solicit corporate matching gift donations for what were actually their children?s tuition payments.

Wellspring Academy, which was located near South Boston, marketed itself as a Christian-based residential school for boys with academic and behavioral problems. Tuition at the school ranged from $43,000 to $49,000 a year.

In April 2003, Gluhareff abruptly closed the school, citing financial problems. In the days following, teachers complained about not getting paid, and parents and students made allegations of abuse, inadequate campus facilities and strange disciplinary practices.

In May 2003, a Halifax County District Court Judge awarded more than $9,000 to a former school employee and two businesses seeking payment for services.

In August 2003, Gluhareff and his wife, Elizabeth, filed personal bankruptcy and corporate bankruptcy on behalf of The Religious and Educational Institute of Raleigh Inc., which encompassed Wellspring Academy.

Parents Dismayed By Wellspring Closing
Wellspring Academy, a special school for at-risk youth which has been operating in Halifax County since 1986, has been closed. That was the word from Bob Gluhareff, owner of the academy. Gluhareff on Tuesday referred all questions about the school to his Danville attorney Glenn Pulley or to local law enforcement officers.

According to Halifax County Sheriff D.J. Oakes, a fast moving chain of events which began last Friday, April 18, 2003 led to the school's closure.

Oakes said he was called out toWellspring around 1 a.m. on Saturday morning when four of the students at the school did not return as expected. The students, he explained, had been taken from the school premises by a counselor, whose paycheck had bounced. The counselor, he said, had 20 of the school's 70 students in her charge, and she took four of them to South Boston where she lives and had them contact their parents. Two of the four, Oakes said, were at the school under court order.

The sheriff said the counselor had the boys all call their parents to advise them of their whereabouts and to describe for them conditions at the school. Most of the students at the school were still on spring break.

Oakes said he called in employees of the Halifax County Social Services Department to investigate conditions and to talk to the four boys who were later found in a garage apartment in South Boston near where the counselor lived. Several of the parents who lived in far away places, he noted, were by that time already en route to pick up their children.

The boys, the sheriff said, were taken to the Halifax County Sheriff's Department where Social Service staffers questioned them about the conditions and one, according to Oakes, asked to be taken back to the school.

"They were brought back to Wellspring and slept in the living room of Gluhareff's home," Oakes said, noting that he thought everything was okay at that point.

But, Oakes continued, the counselor, whom he described as "disgruntled" because her paycheck had bounced, had called the parents of most of her other charges, and they began coming to the school, questioning what was going on.

"By Sunday," Oakes said, "Gluhareff called and said he was closing the school down because he simply could not weather the storm (from the parents). He (Gluhareff) called his employees and on Monday everyone was paid," according to the sheriff.

Oakes said Tuesday that he is awaiting a final report from Social Services on their findings at the school.

Commonwealth's Attorney John Greenbacker, who was called by Gluhareff over the week-end about the situation said simply, "Allegations of any wrong doings will be turned over to the Virginia State Police for their investigation."

But parents and staffers had a different take on what happened over the week-end. One parent, Susan Dalgleish of Charlotte, N.C., whose 17 year old son has been enrolled at Wellspring since last July, said events of the week-end had been "a real eye-opener about the boys' treatment" at the school for her and several other parents she met over this past week-end.

"We don't want him (Gluhareff) to ever be able to regroup or resurface to be in charge of at-risk youth again," she said. Noting that she had paid $46,000 to the school since her son enrolled on July 12, 2002, she said that while she would like to get some of her money back, her prime goal was to see the school shut down.

She added that a number of parents have banded together to file a class action lawsuit against the academy and that an attorney has been hired to file suit. The parents, Dalgleish, said come from Colorado, two sets from New York and others from Maryland and other locations, as well as herself.

She defended the counselor's actions in removing the four boys from the school last Friday. Lisa Grant, the counselor, she said, had only the safety of the four boys in mind when she took them to South Boston. "She was careful to have each of the boys call their parents to let them know they were safe and where they could be found." Grant, she said, always worked under the assumption of doing what was best for those boys in her care. "It's all about the boys," Dalgleish said was the focus of Grant's actions.

Dalgleish said when she enrolled her son at Wellspring and paid $25,000 for his first three month stay there, she had been told personally by Gluhareff that the school was certified and that he would be doing testing on her son and working out a plan for his personal development there. In October, she said, she paid another $21,000 for the coming months' tuition. Now, she says, her son has never had the opportunity to take SAT tests, nor has she received any academic report on his work.

Another parent told the Lynchburg News & Advance that her 16 year old son had only been at the school for three weeks when she was told it was closing. She said she had been required to make a $25,000 deposit at the time she enrolled her child and is now told the money will not be refunded. A San Diego, California parent also told the News & Advance that she had enrolled her son on April 11, making a $25,000 deposit which she is now being told will not be refunded although the boy was there for only ten days.

"The kids have been traumatized and the parents shocked," Dalgleish said, noting that now her son tells her he was consistently yelled at during his stay at the school and told he "was worth nothing." She said students had advised their parents after the unfolding of the week-end's events that they were scared to say anything about conditions, fearing what the repercussions from the school administration might be. Their telephone calls to the parents were monitored, Dalgleish contends.

A former student at the school called this newspaper yesterday to say that Wellspring "was good for me and a lot of other kids who went to school there." He was, however, concerned about what the closure might do to the counselors. "I never met so many people who were so dedicated to the kids and to their jobs. They put out so much effort," said Carson Stanley, who finished Wellspring last year and is now attending a community college near Charlotte, NC.

Stanley said he felt that the school had accepted a lot of kids who probably would have been in jail were it not for Wellspring. "Bob Gluhareff seemed to me to be a really honest person, one we all looked up to. Now I'm asking myself is he really just a con artist?"

Another counselor at the academy whose checks had not bounced, said she just didn't know what to think after being called Sunday and told the school was closed. "I was just floored. My emotions ranged from anger to hurt to dismay. I am really concerned about my parents and my boys. I'm working hard to help them get into another program, but the timing right now is bad," she said, asking not to be identified.

She noted that she and other employees had been called into a conference on Friday and told that some parents of the school's students had not honored their financial commitments, consequently staffers' pay would be cut by 20 percent retroactively to two pay periods.

Employees were also told at that time that they would not be able to get their checks on Friday as had been the practice, but rather they would have to wait until Monday to be paid. "I was never aware of any of the financial status of the school," she said. "My job was to work with the boys and their parents. Wellspring has done a lot of good for a lot of boys," she said. "The staff had helped a lot of young men work through their problems. This just comes as such a shock that I am numb."

That same counselor had only the best things to say about Grant, who had taken the four boys to her home on Friday. "Her method might have been wrong, but her motives were right. She has an unbelievable heart for the kids and always wanted to do what was in their best interest."

Reports said the school had financial problems other than the bounced checks to the employees. A food service provider reportedly is owned some $26,000 while a local restaurant owner who has been catering meals to the school says he has not been paid for his recent services.

Gluhareff ran unsuccessfully for a seat on the Halifax County Baord of Supervisors in the November 2001 elections and was supported by Fifth District Congressman Virgil Goode to whom he had made political donations and who has made several appearances for special events at the school. He was also a staunch supporter of other Republican candidates, including Senator George Allen to whose campaign he had contributed $2,000 in 1999.

The Federal Election Commission lists a $4,500 contribution from Gluhareff to the Republican Party of Virginia in 2001 and the Virginia Public Access Project lists an $11,200 cash donation to Delegate Clarke Hogan. Gluhareff also donated another $2,000 in cash to the Class of 2002 Southside Leadership Fund which was set up to support Hogan, Delegates Robert Hurt and Danny Marshall.

School Counselor's Car Burned Early Monday
South Boston Police are investigating a car fire they were called to investigate early Monday morning at 1332 Shepherd Street. A 1989 Honda Accord which was parked in the driveway of the residence was fully engulfed in flames alongside a wooden privacy fence when officers first arrived around 4 a.m.

Fire department members quickly brought the blaze under control, but the vehicle was declared a total loss. Two other vehicles, a 1993 Ford Taurus and a 1986 Ford van also suffered minor damages.

According to South Boston Police Investigator Tim Van Aernem, the fire is being treated as "suspicious," although no cause of the blaze has yet been determined.

The owner of the car, Lisa Grant, was asleep at the time and was awakened by a neighbor who noticed the flames coming from the car. Grant was a counselor at Wellspring Academy prior to the school's closure this past week-end.

When Van Aernem was asked if the fire might be in any way tied to the events of the week-end at Wellspring, the investigator said "there is absolutely no evidence at this time to in any way tie the two together."

After the academy obtained nonprofit status in 1990, Gluhareff also advised some parents that a large portion of their tuition payments could be deducted on their taxes as a charitable donation, authorities say.

The U.S. Attorney's Office declined to say whether any parents would be held accountable for false filings.

At the same time, Gluhareff led parents to believe that their employers could match their "charitable donations" to the academy, documents show. As a result, four companies sent Wellspring Academy matches totaling $67,000.

Gluhareff is also accused of telling the parents of Wellspring students that children received counseling from licensed professional counselors on campus when in fact no one on staff was licensed as a counselor in Virginia.

The indictment charges Gluhareff with lying to a federal grand jury about the licensing status of his counselors and with faxing two letters to attorneys that claimed that "each student meets with his individual licensed counselor weekly."

The indictment states that some parents based their decision to choose Wellspring Academy in large part on the belief that their children would have access to licensed counselors.

Finally, Gluhareff sold timber rights to 90 acres of his land to a logger for $60,000. The problem, according to officials: Gluhareff had already pledged that land to BB&T for a $1.3 million loan.

Thank you to all the people that contributed to this forum. Without the ability for people to see that they are not alone in this struggle Bob Gluhareff may have never been stopped. Also I thank God for the investigators that have been pursuing this case for several years and have had the dedication to justice and protecting the victims of this wicked man, we are in your debt. Our support and prayers will continue as this case moves forward into trial.
Questions:
Does anyone know if the state police will pursue the questions of him having sex with 14 year old girls in the state of Virginia?

This is wonderful news!  I read the press coverage from a whole bunch of cities.  I have to say, I was really disappointed that the Raleigh paper talked to Bob in his office and gave him such a platform for trying to sound like HE was the victim.  Christian art on the walls and a jar labled "Warm fuzzies" indeed!  Why wasn't equal time devoted to a former student and/or parent who disagrees with Bob's version of life at Wellspring?

Well, it doesn't matter how he sounds in the news, all that matters is what happens in the justice system.  A big THANK YOU to the Assistant US Attorney, agents from the Virginia State Police, Treasury Dept, and US Postal Service for all their hard work.  And this investigation has been hard work.  A big THANK YOU to the parents who have allowed WS to remain part of their lives by helping with the investigation when it would be so much easier to try to forget and heal.

Now how and when are we going to get this country to take responsibility for all the other Wellsprings out there and make this stop?

On May 24, 2006, Gluhareff appeared in front of a Grand Jury in the Western District of Virginia sitting in Roanoke, Virginia. The Grand Jury has charged that Gluhareff knowingly made a false material declaration in regards to the licensing of the counselors that worked at Wellspring Academy.
If convicted on all counts, the maximum penalty faced by the defendant is 297 years imprisonment and/or a fine of $7,400,000.
The investigation of the case was conducted by the United States Postal Inspection Service, the Virginia State Police, and the IRS. Assistant United States Attorney Jennie L. M. Waering will prosecute the case.
A Grand Jury indictment is only a charge and not evidence of guilt. The defendant is entitled to a fair trial with the burden on the government to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

DANVILLE - An additional 17 federal indictments were handed down Thursday against the founder and former CEO of the Wellspring Academy related to his handling of school and personal funds.

Robert Serge Gluhareff now faces 21 counts of bank fraud, one count of money laundering, 25 counts of tax fraud, four counts of mail fraud and two counts of wire fraud, bringing the total number of charges to 53. On July 25, Gluhareff was indicted on 36 charges.

As with the first set of indictments, Gluhareff is accused of scheming and mishandling school and personal funds in order to obtain money. Authorities say Gluhareff routinely deposited parents? tuition checks before the funds became available.

Between April 2002 and April 2003, Gluhareff knowingly deposited about $476,000 in worthless tuition checks into the school?s BB&T account and drew money from the ?fraudulently inflated? balances created by the deposits, according to the indictment.

The indictments also allege that Gluhareff assisted in misrepresenting tuition payments as tax-deductible ?scholarship donations,? encouraged parents to solicit corporate matching gift donations for what were actually their children?s tuition payments, and falsely promoted the school as having licensed counselors.

Gluhareff founded Wellspring Academy, which was located near South Boston, as a Christian-based residential school for boys who had academic, behavioral and other problems. He cited financial problems when he abruptly closed the school in April 2003. Teachers complained about not getting paid, and parents and students complained of abuse and inadequate campus facilities.

In August 2003, Gluhareff and his wife, Elizabeth, filed personal and corporate bankruptcy.

Bob will be arraigned October 16.  
His trial is scheduled to start Feb 26 at 9 am in the federal building in Roanoke.
He's charged with 53 counts of I think 6 different charges.
It was a long time coming.

Great forum.  For those of you who were at Wellspring, I am sorry to hear about the pain that this has caused.  I was there for about a year.  I was fortunate enough to have had parents who finally just started believing what I was saying.  While most of what I read, is right on the money, there were some truly good people that attended.  Most of those people figured it out and got out.  To those people, I hope that all of you are doing well.  Some of you might know EXACTLY who I am when I tell you that I would have RATHER not attended Wellspring (sorry, inside joke to many)   If that rings any bells, shoot me an email sometime vacityspree@hotmail.com.  I really am glad to see that things are finally going to be set straight.

i was a student at wellspring and i just got my subpoena in the mail today to testify for the state, the court dates are from;
FEBRUARY 26th - MARCH 16th 2007 (you dont have to be present the whole time tho)
the proceedings are over a 3 week period, all people going to testify will recieve an allowance for travel and food, (at least it says something about that in the papers)

My father is appearing at the trial, he said it should begin mid may of this year. I just found out about this forum, and find it funny so many people want to protect Bob. Glad I was only there for the last six months of the school's existence, but it sucks for my parents who had already paid for a year. My dad will take the stand, and say his piece. I live in Sugar Grove, and have since before i went to wellspring. The school changed my relationship with my folks, we haven't been able to live together since the school, but now i live down the street and we are all right. I pass by the Cove Creek Farm (Chris Chrisienberry's School) to go to College. My parents learned of wellspring from him; he had just opened his school when i got sent off (taken in the middle of the night like so many others). I remember some guys from when i was there, and keep in touch with one staff member. I will be at the trial if at all possible. Wish all the students the best. Oh and i ran into Mike the outdoor guy at a bar in Boone. He recognized me without a doubt, but no words were exchanged.

FOUNDER OF WELLSPRING ACADEMY PLEADS GUILTY TO BANK FRAUD, TAX FRAUD AND MAIL FRAUD

United States Attorney John L. Brownlee announced today that Robert Serge Gluhareff, age 62, of South Boston, Virginia, pleaded guilty to two counts of bank fraud, one count of tax fraud and one count of mail fraud. The plea was entered in United States District Court in Roanoke pursuant to a plea agreement.

“Mr. Gluhareff has admitted that he misled the families who came to Wellspring Academy for his assistance. Through his words and actions, Mr. Gluhareff took advantage of parents desperate to find a suitable placement for their sons and caused parents and some of their employers to falsely fill out their own tax returns. In addition, Mr. Gluhareff put the funds of a federally insured financial institution at risk,” said United States Attorney John Brownlee. “I commend the hard work of this team of agents and prosecutors who have investigated this case for four years.”

According to evidence presented by Trial Attorney John S. Darden and Assistant United States Attorney Jennie Waering, Gluhareff was the founder and CEO of Wellspring Academy in Sutherlin, Virginia. Wellspring Academy opened in the late 1980's, and was a residential school that was promoted as providing counseling in a Christian setting to young people with academic and behavioral problems. Wellspring Academy operated under the corporate name “The Religious and Educational Institute of Raleigh, Inc.”

For a time, Wellspring Academy admitted both girls and boys. By 1997, it was a school for boys only. From 2000 to 2003, approximately 60 to 100 boys attended Wellspring Academy at any one time. Tuition during this time ranged from $43,000 to $49,000 per student.

From 1999 through 2003, Gluhareff and Wellspring Academy became mired in serious financial difficulty and did not have the money to meet expenses.

When parents brought their sons to Wellspring Academy, they were required to pay an initial $21,500 to $25,000 tuition payment that day. Many parents did not have the funds available and were forced to apply for loans. Gluhareff would convince these parents to write initial tuition checks, but promised not to deposit the checks for an agreed upon period. Gluhareff would then deposit the checks in the Wellspring Academy account, knowing that the parents’ accounts had insufficient funds to cover the check. Gluhareff also deposited bad checks written on his own accounts and credit lines. Based on the fact that Wellspring Academy received next day credit on its deposits, the net effect of Gluhareff’s knowing deposit of these bad checks was that the school account balance was articially inflated and that his school received a series of interest free unsecured loans. Because he wrote checks on this inflated balance by the time of the school’s closing in April 2003, the account was overdrawn by more than $40,000.

Gluhareff would also tell parents that certain tuition payments were tax deductible as “scholarship donations” if they were paid in advance. Gluhareff also asked parents to have their employers donate matching gifts to Wellspring Academy, even though Gluhareff knew the “scholarship donations” were actually student tuition payments and not charitable contributions. Based on Gluhareff’s certifications that part of the tuition payment was tax deductible, parents submitted false tax returns that resulted in a total tax loss to the government of $405,051.56.

The investigation of the case was conducted by the United States Postal Inspection Service, the Virginia State Police, and the IRS. John S. Darden, Trial Attorney with the Department of Justice Fraud Section, Criminal Division and Assistant United States Attorney Jennie L. M. Waering are prosecuting the case.

Sentencing has been set for July 16, 2007 at 2pm.

If you live in Virginia, it probably is.
Bob Gluhareff negotiated an agreement to plead guilty to 4 out of 52 felony charges.  Among the charges dropped are those that he promised parents that their sons would receive weekly individual counseling sessions with licensed professional counselors.  He was also charged with lying to a federal grand jury about the licensure status of counselors at Wellspring.  Nobody on the entire WS staff was a licensed professional counselor in Virginia.  The plea agreement includes Bob's written admission that the "United States has probable cause to bring all the counts in the indictment...that these charges were not frivolous, vexatious, or in bad faith".
Just because the charges were dropped doesn't mean they aren't true or the government doesn't have evidence strong enough to convict, this was a compromise.

When the school closed suddenly in 2003, parents who paid in advance were out thousands of dollars.

Today, U.S. District Judge Samuel Wilson sentenced Gluhareff to 30 months in prison on each of the four charges, to be served concurrently. Gluhareff also was ordered to pay more than $500,000 restitution, although both defense and prosecution agreed that it’s unlikely he’ll be able to repay that much.

Legal fallout from the collapse three years ago of a pricey Christian school for troubled youth in Halifax County continued Monday with guilty pleas in U.S. District Court.

Robert Serge Gluhareff, the 62-year-old founder and former head of Wellspring Academy in Sutherlin, pleaded guilty to four counts of fraud -- two related to bank fraud, and one each to tax and mail fraud. Those charges, and 49 more dismissed under a plea agreement, stemmed from what prosecutors described as the South Boston resident's attempts to stave off his school's financial collapse and preserve his family's livelihood.

The school's abrupt closing in 2003 left parents who had paid tuition in advance out thousands of dollars.

Contacted by telephone after the court hearing, Ted Mitchell of Youngsville, N.C., said he doubted he'd get back the more than $30,000 he'd borrowed to pay for his son to attend Wellspring.

"He has ruined my life, my wife's life, my son's life," Mitchell said of Gluhareff.

The plea agreement set a sentencing range of 27 to 33 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release. Details of restitution are to be set at sentencing, which is scheduled for July 16.

Wellspring was set up in the late 1980s as a Christian residential program for children with behavioral and academic problems. By 1997, it had become a boys-only facility, and in its final years, about 60 to 100 boys attended at any time. Annual tuition ranged from $43,000 to $49,000.

Gluhareff's wife, two sons and their wife and girlfriend were on Wellspring's payroll during its last years.

Prosecutors said that between 1999 and 2003 Gluhareff temporarily inflated the balances of Wellspring's bank account by depositing bad checks written on his personal accounts and by depositing parents' tuition checks when he knew they had not yet acquired loans to cover them.

Gluhareff or his staff, at his direction, also told parents they could claim advance tuition payments as tax deductions by calling them scholarship donations, and gave them misleading letters to help claim the improper deductions, prosecutors said.

Jay Darden, a U.S. Department of Justice trial attorney who presented the government's evidence, said the bogus deductions cost the government $405,051 in taxes. After the court session, U.S. attorney's office spokeswoman Heidi Coy said she did not know how the improper deductions were being handled.

In newspaper accounts at the time of the school's shutdown, Gluhareff blamed procedural errors and a disgruntled employee for problems.

June Speaker, the parent of another Wellspring student, said Monday after Gluhareff's plea that she initially chose the school because it billed itself as a Christian program. Later, though, she wanted to bring her son back to their home near Chicago because of what she described as harsh discipline and because she wasn't allowed to talk to her son for more than two months.

When she got a call on Easter weekend 2003 that the school was closing and she needed to retrieve her son, it was the answer to her prayers, Speaker said.

As much as I hate to say it Bob, karma is a bitch.
When you spend your adult life manipulating people and taking their money, it WILL come back to bite you in the ass (as it obviously did).

Wellspring really fucked me over in a lot of ways. It robbed me of those essential times where you learn to interact with the opposite sex like a normal fucking human being. Because of this I am constantly plagued with extreme anxiety all the time, I have trouble meeting new people, and I am just generally socially awkward. This was never the case before Wellspring. And lets be honest here, is it really necessary to throw kids into a situation like that for drug use? I mean, for fucks sake, I still use drugs regularly, and Wellspring caused me more problems than the drugs ever have. In fact, they tend to help me to not be a social retard and therefore help reverse the negative affects the Wellspring had on me.

The only thing that pisses me off is that he didn't have the fucking balls to take responsibility for his actions (isn't that why we were all imprisoned there in the first place) and took the easy way out. Way to just abandon Sharon (one of the sweetest women I have ever met), Dave (I wasn't a huge fan, but it must be hard to know your dad blew his own fucking brains out), Jon, Brandy, Jenny, etc...
I would love to get in touch with some of the staff that I really felt had our interests at heart like Joe (as much as most of you hated him, he took me under his wing and genuinely cared), Sean, Hank, Lisa G, and I can't remember his name but that big fat dude that helped Stan run security.

If any of you guys still check up on this, get in touch. I miss a lot of you.
