Educator appears in court in sex-abuse case
ST. GEORGE -- Joy Lynette Andrews, 33, made her first appearance in court Thursday in connection with charges that she engaged in sexual activity with a 17-year-old girl.

Andrews is charged with forcible sodomy, a first-degree felony, and forcible sexual abuse, a second-degree felony. The charges stem from a police investigation that indicated Andrews, who was a staff member at Cinnamon Hills, a facility for troubled youths, met the girl when the girl was a resident there.

Andrews has denied the allegations.

She appeared before 5th District Judge James Shumate, who set a hearing for Andrews for Nov. 24 before Judge Eric Ludlow.

An official at Cinnamon Hills declined comment on Andrews' employment status.

ST. GEORGE - The defense attorney for former Cinnamon Hills Youth Crisis Center counselor Joy Lynette Andrews won a postponement of her trial Wednesday on charges she had a sexual relationship with a girl housed at the center in 2008.

Andrews' attorney, Douglas Terry, asked Judge Eric Ludlow to delay the 5th District Court jury trial planned for five days beginning Sept. 28 to better prepare for a difficult case.

"It's going to be a complicated and lengthy trial and we need additional time to prepare," Terry said.

"There's just a lot of people involved," he said. "It was a pretty quick setting for a trial of this nature."

Andrews pleaded not guilty in June to charges of one count of forcible sodomy, a first-degree felony, and one count of forcible sexual abuse, a second-degree felony, stemming from an alleged relationship that reportedly began in June 2008 with a then-16-year-old from northern Utah housed at the center.

The alleged victim testified at a June hearing on the case that her relationship with Andrews was good, and that she had initially denied to a northern Utah judge that a relationship existed because she wanted to protect Andrews, and that she was not under oath when she spoke with the judge.

The girl said the matter was brought forward to law enforcement after she confided in a counselor and a staff member at a different group home in Provo earlier this year.

County Attorney Ryan Shaum said he was not surprised by the request to continue the trial to a later date and did not argue against the motion.

"We had our subpoenas out and we were planning to go to trial," he said. "But we do understand this was a fairly quick setting on a trial that was supposed to last at least a week."

Ludlow scheduled a status hearing for Jan. 6 to review the progress of the case.

Title: No Cinnamon Hills for some Nova Scotians
Post by: Ursus on October 24, 2009, 05:31:48 PM
News of this case (http://http://www.fornits.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=28116&p=349271#p349271) even made it to that Nova Scotian grandmother who is still fighting to keep her grandson's placement closer to home:

Outraged, Gloria, whose name and that of her grandson have been changed, poured thousands of dollars into legal services to fight the decision, but the judge upheld the ruling. By then, her concern had become about more than the distance: it emerged that a former Cinnamon Hills worker, Joy Lynette Andrews, was facing charges relating to an alleged sexual relationship with a 16-year-old resident. (The 34-year-old pleaded not guilty last month.) Though Nathan didn't end up going to Utah (he was deemed inadmissible to the U.S.), the alternative of Trenton has left Gloria only marginally less desperate. "He doesn't need to be going where he's going," she says. "That child needs to be loved." (Days after his arrival in Trenton, Nathan ran away. He was later returned by police.)[/i][/list]

How many cases are there of this kind at this specific facility?

The Wiki datasheet (http://http://wiki.fornits.com/index.php?title=Cinnamon_Hills_Youth_Crisis_Center) mentions a 25 year old staff member having a sexual relationship with a girl (http://http://www.deseretnews.com/article/1,5143,695246913,00.html) in January 2008.

ST. GEORGE — Police have arrested a man they allege had a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old runaway from a center for troubled teens.

Police said the girl was allowed to leave the Cinnamon Hills youth crisis center to visit her family earlier this month and ran away from them. She contacted a 25-year-old staff member of the center, officers said.

"They were friends and she called him and they went and had a sexual encounter that afternoon," St. George Police Sgt. Craig Harding said Thursday.

The girl was returned to her parents several hours later. During their investigation, police said the girl disclosed the sexual encounter. Harding said the man then corroborated it. The man was booked into the Purgatory Jail on investigation of unlawful sexual conduct by a person in a position of trust.

Police said there is no evidence the two had a sexual relationship while the girl was at the center.

Joy Lynette sounds like a work of art.  I hope she gets life in prison if a jury finds her guilty.  She will have fun with inmates who are "sexually aggressive."
