I used to work for Camp E-Hunt-Tee, an Eckerd Youth Alternatives wilderness camp, and would be willing to answer questions the best I can.

I was working at a boarding school in New Mexico and applied to Eckerd. I was interested in working in the outdoors.

Camp E-Hun-Tee required me to stay for a visit, two nights to my knowledge, to observe group culture as well as standards.
What were the circumstances that led you to leave?
This is a good question. Worked three years at Camp E-Hun-Tee. It was not an easy job. My epilepsy medicines, seizures and burnout factor were the reasons.

I was a wilderness counselor assigined to a group. We were to assure safety of other children, uphold group standards, lead by example, confront problems via. through huddle ups and go on river trips.

The big problems were poor management. Skip Crawford was the Camp Director for EHT who was fired from another Eckerd Camp in Florida. Dave Dickey was the Program Director. They both knew Chief Justice in RI which played out in their favor. John Wellington was the Program Director in Training. There were allot of staff who didn't agree with John's methods. For example, he would pull a child away from huddles if he thought they were going to be restrained. That, in my opinion, prevented allot of restraints. The counselors who didn't like it were hell bent on holding the child accountable for breaking standards, rule infractions etc. I witnessed John grab a kid by the collar in the van because he was acting out. Wellington had his strong points and weak points. I'm trying to present the whole picture here. I witnessed a riot, restraint in the chuck wagon (dining hall) and other questionable restraints. In short, EHT was a cluster fuck.

If ran properly, children/staff in the group would help the child formulate a plan of action to deal with anger including other problems effectively. The problem was, I noticed at EHT, were new staff running their group alone with 10 other children. New counselor + 10 angry/violent children = disaster. They had reason to be pissed. Their parents/legal guardians abused them.
what could cause a kid to be restrained?
They could be restrained for harming themselves, others, running away. Did all restraints go by the book? In short, No.

The basic history, math etc.

Reality therapy.

That's a 3 or so week training every counselor in the Eckerd's Wilderness system has to undergo down at Camp E-How-Kee in Brooksville, Florida. You learn first aid, CPR, restraints, how to do campsite chores, how to build a tent, how to plan a river trip, how to paddle a canoe, lifeguard training, and then you go on an 8 to 10 day river trip on the Suwannee or Ocklawha river.
Most Chiefs tend to indicate Cats was a waste of time and that they got little out of it.
I can't remember my class number anymore, but I remember my trainer, Chief Rich out of New Hampshire.
