Title: skyline referral
Post by: wesfager on August 23, 2003, 08:11:00 AM
I read on Fornits a couple of months ago (I'm pretty sure it was on Teen Help)  an article about Skyline.  It was a posting of a newspaper article that told about a wilderness referral service that gave a good referral on Skyline in spite of the death of Ian August.  Upon contact, the owner of the referral program said that he had not mentioned the death of August because there had been only allegations" of homicide,  eg. there had not been a successful prosecution as of yet.

The article could have been part 2 to A Deadly Path By Brooke Adams , The Salt Lake Tribune.

Can anyone point me to that article or posting?

Thank you,
Wes Fager

Thanks Deborah,

But it's not the article i'm looking for.  In the article, the reporter noticed that the wilderness association was still plugging Skyline even though there had been an arrest for homicide.  when teh association was asked why they still endorsed the program they responded that there were only allegations and they don't mention allegations,  only convictions.  I think Skyline is the program.

Wes,
I went through all my files and couldn't find it. I vaguely remember a scenerio like you're describing, but can't remember if it was Skyline.
If you find it, would you please post it to this thread.
Thanks, Deborah

Found it Wes:
The link no longer works:

SOME "CONSUMER-INFORMATION RESOURCE" !!!

It reads:
Despite, the incident (Ian's murder), Skyline Journey still has a five-star rating, the highest available, from http://www.WildernessTherapy.org (http://www.WildernessTherapy.org) , and independent nonprofit consumer-information resource, which conducts research and gathers information on wilderness programs.

Michael Conner, an Oregon psychologist and wilderness program expert who oversees the Web site, said the rating system, "doesn't account for allegations or charges that are recently made." He recommends that parents do their own reseearch by determining if a specific wilderness program has any pending civil or criminal court cases.
