No surprise here! The Hyde School is nothing more than an "Alternative School" for afluent parents who want to send their behaviorally challenged, arrogant, spoiled children far, far away....... A prep school it is not! These are NOT the type of children you want little Sally Sue and Billy Joe bringing home for supper any time soon! They may find a way to make an explosive out of the entre or try smoking the veggies!

"Hyde School is located in Woodstock, CT. It is a private, alternative school that serves 202 students in grades 9-12. Hyde School is coed (school has male and female students) and is nonsectarian in orientation.
Hyde School has 7 students for every full-time equivalent teacher. The Connecticut average is 15 students per full-time equivalent teacher. Learn more about Hyde School's students and teachers. "

Here's the true story about this place. Perhaps, the most telling comment was; "For many kids, Hyde is the last stop before some terrifying tough-love, boot-camp institution socked away deep in some western wilderness."

These are not bad kids. What is crazy is the "behavior modification" they are subjected to. The Connecticut AG should investigate what goes on at that place.
Hyde School has had "fires" before.

This comment is from a person who obviously knows nothing about Hyde......and lives in woodstock?. This is not a school that parents just send there kids away to. Parental involvement is substantial and required. It is for families who choose not to stick their head in the sand, throw their hands up and just send their kids away. It is for parents who truly care about their child and are willing to make the financial sacrifice, and for some, it is a real sacrifice.
you should walk a mile in someone elses shoes before making ignorant comments my friend.

Thank God for the Hyde Schools.
If you have never been there, and are not a member of the Hyde community, I can understand why you might view the school and its mission with suspicion. It is a very different kind of school, with a focus on character and accountability for kids and their families.
HThis is not a spoiled affluent place to dump your difficult children. It is not a place where you drop them off and write a check, like getting your car fixed. Hyde requires a huge commitment from the families. The student's entire family participates in family education, and each parent is on campus for several days at a time, at least 3 times a year. During that time, everone is involved in very helpful and often life changing family education workshops.
I know this from experience, not just a bias aroused by a news story. My son was at Hyde School, and in the first year, my husband and I spent a total of 50 days either on campus or at Hyde parents' educational meetings sand other events.
The Hyde kids are absolutely wonderful. The difference between them and the kids acting out back home is that they and their parents are working on improving their character and being accountable for their actions. These are not children, they are young men and women who are self aware and committed to a high standard of conduct. I am proud to know them.

Hyde School's system of "accountability" is egregiously flawed:
"...contrary to prevailing educational and mental health standards, name calling, shaming, intimidation, judging, minimizing and humiliation are embedded in the school's belief system and practices; these emotionally abusive behaviors are used frequently and intentionally..."
"...Hyde tends to view mental health issues as "character flaws," not as medical conditions that require research-based interventions. Hyde's decision not to have a licensed counseling team is deliberate, not an oversight; it reflects Hyde's belief system and model."

Hyde School's "focus on character and accountability for kids and their families" does not, apparently, apply to themselves. Where was the "high standard of conduct" when the school was repeated asked to step in and take action in the case of a faculty member's sexual harassment of a student?
Hyde School sued for tolerating and encouraging sexual misconduct:

Woodstock: 2 Hyde School students injured in lab explosion
By JOHN PENNEY
Norwich Bulletin
Posted Dec 17, 2008 @ 03:00 AM
Two Hyde School students were hospitalized with burns Monday after a small explosion inside a chemistry lab, school and fire officials said.
At 8:45 p.m., police and firefighters responded to reports of a chemical explosion that flared while three students were conducting an experiment with their science teacher, Woodstock Fire Chief Tim Young said.
He said two unidentified students suffered “mild to moderate injuries” and were taken to Day Kimball Hospital in Putnam.
“There was no fire when we arrived, but there was a tremendous amount of smoke,” Young said. “It took quite a while to clear the building as dry chemicals were used to contain the fire.”
One student was released after being treated for minor burns; the other remains hospitalized, said John Rigney, assistant head of the Hyde School, in a press release. He said the parents of all students involved were notified and the school is “processing this incident and looking to see what lessons can be learned.”
Rigney said the students were preparing for a science fair. School officials did not comment on what chemicals were used or how the fire started.
Fire Marshal Richard Baron said the incident has been ruled accidental and the case is closed.

Chemistry Experiment Blamed For Woodstock School Fire
By MARK SPENCER | The Hartford Courant
2:23 PM EST, December 16, 2008
A fire at the Hyde School in Woodstock Monday was caused by a chemical flare-up while a chemistry teacher and three students were working on an experiment, a school official said in a statement today.
John Rigney, assistant head of school, said the fire was extinguished immediately and fire and police officials were contacted.
Two of the students were sent to Day Kimball Hospitall in Putnam. One has been released with minor burns while the other student is still being evaluated, Rigney said.

Somebody local should INVESTIGATE. Did this teacher KNOW what he was doing? Hyde School routinely hires teachers "qualified" only by their adherence to the Hyde School character education cult. Some of them might not even have their bachelor's degree.

Well, thankfully there were no fatalities (although it sounds like one student is still in the hospital). Though I'd sure like to know why they were conducting experiments at 8:45 PM... And also: just who exactly was the teacher that was allegedly supervising this? Was it the regular Chemistry teacher? Or just someone who was supervising study hall? Since this apparently occurred during study hall time...

I'm sorry, but I am a current student at Hyde... and it has done wonders for my family. The students are far from inept. I think that those individuals who bash Hyde are completely ignorant. Hyde can get stressful at times, but in the long run, Hyde students are better prepared for life in general. I do not personally know, or know of, a single Hyde graduate who has grown up to be a useless deadbeat. The teachers here are plenty qualified and would do anything for their students. The teachers and the students at Hyde have better relationships than most teens have with their parents. I know that I can personally rely on any faculty member at Hyde... especially the Chemistry teacher. I spent a good portion of my summer with her and she is a strong, independent, and smart woman. Hyde is not for snobby rich kids.... my parents have made many sacrifices to send me here and they work equally as hard as I do within the Hyde process. I am not offended by the false and ignorant comments made towards Hyde because I know that personally, I am over all more well rounded than the beholders of the ill comments... I mean, I am only seventeen and I have been offered multiple internships which peruse my future careers, am in the process if a book publication, and selling photography via an art gallery, on my own.. Just to name a few things that most internet blogging junkies or humans in general, will not accomplish in a lifetime. There are no mentally unstable students attending Hyde. No students are mentally ill, crazy excreta. The students at Hyde work twice as hard as any normal high school teen. We definitely work harder than certain cyber-stalkers s who spend their free time uselessly blogging their days away......

Well... thanks for your input, student! One thing that I am sure many of us would very much like to know is: what is the status of the third student who was still in the hospital (as per the latest update). Should you happen to revisit fornits, an update on that particular would be most appreciated.
As for your post, I am not entirely sure what you are trying to say. Forgive me, I can sometimes be quite slow on the uptake and dense. Are you angry at the people who posted comments on the Hartford Courant articles? I don't think that most of them are going to know about your anger here. Dear Hyde Mom,
You say that Hyde stepped in and removed the teacher. We all know who that staff member was and his name was Larry Dubinsky. They might have removed him from staff, but he still lives on campus in a house paid for by the school,(his wife still teaches there) and he is very involved with the school and the students including young girls. THIS IS NOT THE WAY TO REMOVE A PREDATOR from having access to more prey!! Hyde has been extremely irresponsible in this matter. No other school would intentionally keep a male predator on campus!

Hyde destroys kids. It teaches them to toe the line, no matter what, instead of integrity and honor. Every story I hear about that place (I have a family member who is employed in one of the schools) makes me think that the leadership there needs to watch the last scene of Scent of a Woman.
Instead of teaching them to think they teach mindless obedience. Hyde is what is wrong in America.

Guess what? I'm real negative. The teachers do a lousy job. The students turn on one another like 'Lord of the Flies', orchestrated by the staff. It is VERY unhealthy. Didn't help me one bit. I had more issues coming out than I did going in.

Heres am oldy but goodie from the 80s. There was a gym teacher who was had kids at the school and mom worked there too, a HYDE family. Just One of many at the time. The rage at the time was percent body fat testing in PE and hyde took up the idea along with the rest of the mainstream educational world. We boyz all had it done. When this middle aged male gym teacher did it for the girls he had them all strip nude, he said underwear elastic would throw off the results. The kicker is they all did it!!!. They lined up infront of this 40 or 50 y/o gym teacher as nude as the day tey were hactched and took turns getting their "fat" measured. (personally, I think the guy was a genious) .
Message: The overbearing, cultlike nature of the school made it so that an entire female student body said yes to an obviously bizarre, and way out of bounds request. Yet they told us they were teaching us to be individuals....on a note favorable to the school leaders the girl who questioned the process (a reverse emporer's new clothes story) was the headmasters 8th grade daughter .....so you guys just do what joe sais and everything will be just fine.....
