Well, I guess it won't be long before the teen help industry shifts gears and starts focusing on "struggling adults".  How bizarre is this?  Now the grown-up kids whose parents forced them into treatment for the better part of their adolescent years can look forward to shipping their parents off to some 3rd world country and keeping them under lock and key!!  

TREATMENT NEEDS EXPECTED TO TRIPLE FOR BABY BOOMERS
(June 12, 2003) The Community Anti-Drug Coalition of America, reports that according to a ?recent analysis of National Household Survey on Drug Abuse data, the number of people age 50 or older requiring substance abuse treatment is expected to increase from 1.7 million in 2000 to 4.4 million in 2020. Those born between 1946 and 1964 are more likely than previous generations to be heavy alcohol and drug users, making them more likely to need substance abuse treatment as they age. These data support the notion that aging baby boomers in the U.S. will place increasing demands on the substance abuse treatment system in the next two decades. This will require a shift in focus among treatment planners to address the special needs of an older population of substance abusers

Okay, I may be outrageously callous, but I see *nothing* wrong with letting drug addicts die, eventually, of cirrhosis or overdose or whatever their drugs do to them IF treatment is available on a voluntary basis and they choose not to take it.

It's not that I want them hurt, it's not that I don't feel sorry for them---I just think that it's usually the least bad option to let people go to hell in their own way.  Forcing people "for their own good" frequently does more harm than good.
