Title: HLA drive-by...
Post by: jjpinks on December 13, 2007, 02:48:37 PM
Being a product of a hellish 1 year stint in a program as a teenager, I am on the lookout for "programs" that say they want to help with "troubled teens". I haven' t posted in this forum for a long time, but thought that I would tell you that the other day I was in Dahlonega with a friend of mine doing some shopping and I said, "lets go for a little ride in the woods". lol
We drove to HLA and I drove right into the place. I didn't realize how far back it is in the woods (never saw this lake) and how close it is to a military training base. Anywho, drove right into the grounds like I owned the place, didn't see a soul around. Took a right turn next to what looked like the admissions building and drove along what looked like the dorms (they all looked like they weren't being used). Got to the end of the road and had to make a u-turn (not what I wanted to have to do) and head back toward the admissions building where I saw about 15 people standing in the road looking at us. Ok, shit time! LOL I concocted this story (so that I wouldn't be charged with tresspassing) about how my 15 year old son is really needing some kind of help because he is always in trouble. And that I had heard about this place and thought that I would take a look at it and see what it looked like (innocent enough right?). I'll be damned, after about 30 minutes of listening to their BS about how great this place was and them trying everything that they could think of to get me to go into the admissions office, I bolted out of there.

WOW I can't tell you the feelings that came over me as I was sitting there listening to them. I felt like I was 15 again and back in the program. That just shows you, they still use alot of the same tactics that they were using back then.

Well, that was a little long, sorry. But I thought that I would share that.

Nicole :)

but next time, dont wuss out and show the kids in there that people outside are working to shut the place down. you should have blared some music, and held up some signs.

Man, I went back to the Straight building a few years back with another survivor.  It was, um.....strange to say the least.  Its now a Verizon dispatch center but the building is the same, the intake rooms are still there although they're offices now.  The woman who took me around was aware of the building's history and more than a little creeped out to hear that my intake was done in her office.

The same cinderblock walls.  The same paint.  The same bathrooms.  Same time-out rooms now being used for storage.  It was very odd.  I'm an atheist (well, prolly truly agnostic but I digress) but I could feel the ghosts all around me.

LOL, I know, what a wuss!! I was truly unprepared to face them, but there is a possibility that I will go back. Just for shits and giggles. Maybe I will borrow someone elses car the next time, you know, one with a real good sound system in it. And blare something truly obnoxious!

Or....maybe I will just start honking and getting everyone's attention and tell everyone to jump into the car, you are free!!!! lol

Ok, it's a nice dream...

I totally understand!!! I wasn't in HLA, but it didn't matter. I had that same old skin-crawling feeling there as I did where I was as a teen. And here I am 25 years later and I didn't realize that a place that I had never been to, could creep me out and give me the heebie-jeebies like I had as a kid. I thought that I was over those feelings....guess not.[/i]

How did you go into campus, take a right, go all the way to the u-turn, and NOT see the lake? You were right beside it.
Title: I was wondering that myself
Post by: Anonymous on December 14, 2007, 06:45:33 PM
I was wondering that myself, unless, the drought in Georgia has dried it up? It used to be about 20 feet deep in the deepest part I think.

The drought is not really affecting the northern part of GA as much as it is the Atl area.  I imagine the lake is just fine.   Even if not, the big hole in the ground should have been very visible if they were where they said they were.

hidden lake has always had problems with droughts. EVERY summer. the atlanta area gets most of it's water from the north georgia area. the lake isnt a resevoir, so hidden lake is always affected. usually the lake looses a few inches every summer, but i doubt it's recceeded all the way. once it's dry, you should be able to see a school bus and a tractor on the bottom of the lake.  Every summer there's always limits on the amount of time kids can take showers for. when restrictions walks around, they have to haul all their water from the lodge because the pump in the feild never works in the summer. a few times they even had us use the construction worker's porta-potty cuz the toilets coulnt be flushed.

To be honest, I wasn't looking for a lake. I was looking at the buildings and people. It is truly possible that I was right next to it and didn't see it....lol (sometimes I have major blonde moments like that! LOL)

Anyway, I am thinking of going back there sometime in the near future (a friend of mine just moved to Dahlonega, so I will be visiting).

you should ask them something like...

my kid is violent, will you take him?
my son just raped my daughter, will you take him?
my kid is gay, will you make him straight?
my kid is too much of a hassle, can you take care of him for 18 months?
my i caught my kid smoking pot, and thats against christ, so can you punish him if i give you money?

i have a feeling they'll say "YES! of course we'll take him"......
and record it...catch them in the act.

oh and i forgot to mention, they know who you are by now. they monitor the message boards, and they can put things together. so i'd be carefull going up again, because i bet by now they called a staff meeting and told everyone that if they see you again, to stop you and call the cops.

Yep, that's pretty close to what happened.  Lots of buzz about it.  Better wear a good disguise, Pink, or send a surrogate.

Maybe next time, I will send some friends posing as a desperate parent, and I will be in the back seat or something. Either way, even if I did just mosey on in pretending to be a parent myself, how could they say that I am not. AND, furthermore, if they were to call the police, I would just "act blonde" and tell them that "I don't know what these people (the HLA people) are talking about, I just came here to discuss my child. But apparently I will not be sending my child to a school where it's obvious that they are paronoid about something." Or something like that...lol

What can they do, really???

once they see you in the back seat alarms will go off. you blew your only chance.

get your freinds behind it, explain everything to them, and get them to do it themselves with a hidden camera/tape recorder.

better yet, call a few weeks ahead of time, asking about the program, and give them fake names for you and your "kid". act like a truly brainwashed and concerned parent who's willing to do anything to help their sinning, pot smoking class skipping tantrum throwing kid. tell them you're not willing to even let them look at transcripts or put in a deposit before you come for a personal visit. knowing hla, they wont have a problem with that.

get your freinds to go, and have them assume the fake name you gave the school.
then get some kid 14-16 years old who fits the "trouble teen" profile/image (or just dress any kid up as a punk/goth/gangsta/hippie) to come with your freinds and sit in the back seat, while pretending to be very very upset.
the resulting video/audio footage will be very interesting.

What specifically did they say that creeped you out so much?

i'm not speaking for her...
but how could anyone not creep her out? personally, it took me weeks to get used to the staff's creepieness after i got there. but then again...anyone with a cross around their neck south of the mason-dixon creeps me out.
