Title: There's nuts everywhere!!!
Post by: Anne Bonney on November 01, 2007, 12:19:08 PM
I'm a legal secretary and work alone quite often.  My boss is a reservist with FEMA and is called up a lot.  He's been out of town for 2 months and won't be back again until the end of December.  I'm used to working on my own and really enjoy it.  I keep my office door locked at all times when my boss is out of town.

About an hour ago someone knocked at the door.  I looked out the peephole, it could very well have been a client, they stop by unannounced all the time.  I cracked the door, at which point he forced his way in talking very fast about how he had an appointment.  He didn't.  He got in, shut the door behind him (which was still locked) and stood in front of it so I couldn't get out.  I have no other exit, I'm alone and scared shitless now.  He started yelling at me telling me he was the son of so and so and he needed a criminal defense attorney.  I look down and notice he has no shoes on.  I told him my boss didn't do criminal work (he does, but I wasn't telling him that).  Then he got really mad and said it was only petty theft, not a criminal offense (ummm, theft IS a criminal offense, but that's beside the point).  He started advancing towards me really pissed by now.  That gave me a chance to go for the door.  One of my desks is in the middle of the room so when he came around towards me one way, I went the other and opened the door, screamed for him to get out and when he came near me I put my foot on his ass and literally kicked him out, shut the door and called the attorney downstairs.   They came up, we called the police (by now the guy was hitting a bunch of other offices).

I'm getting a baby monitor and giving the base to the office next door.  Or some kind of transmitter/receiver/panic button connected to another office in the building.

I know this doesn't have to do with the TTI, but I needed to vent.  Thanks and sorry.

Do you know that there are tools that are specifically meant for situations such as this?

The American constitution even has a paragraph promoting their availability and use.

That's why I called the attorney down the hall.  He's armed.  Heavily.  Guess I should look into it too.

correction...atty downstairs is armed.  next door, I don't know.  They usually all are.  At least around here.

he doesn't need a defense attorney - he needs a program, right? - I can see it now "Man admits to recent theft and running from a program 20 years ago".

Seriously, it's great there are other people in your building - usually, if you can call another office - that will do the trick every time - the best defense is a good strong door lock and phone.

Calling 911 will work for the kooks. A can of pepper spray wouldn't hurt either.

Locks work if you don't open the damn door!   :silly:   Hell, he could have been a client though.  No more opening the door unless I really know them or they have an appointment.  I'm the only one that makes them so they can't say they made one with someone else.

Seriously, something worse could have happened.  You should keep the door locked when you are alone and your boss is away, and put on a sign on the door:Then kooks like won't even try (hopefully).

a can of pepper spray used indoors can cause alot of collateral damage. it can drift in the air and affect everyone else, and you'll have pepper or mace residue all over everything. i remember a month ago some idiot woman had the bright idea of unleashing a can of mace on some guy harrasing her on the subway platform. the entire station had to be evacuated because everyone was affected, and it had to be closed down for the rest of the day, with trains skipping the station.

there are a few solutions far more practical than anything else suggested so far. get a taser. no human being can resist a taser. you can even get the kind cops have, it can take someone down 5 yards away and penetrate thick jackets.
check out http://www.taser.com/products/consumers/Pages/C2.aspx (http://www.taser.com/products/consumers/Pages/C2.aspx)

you can also scream at the top of your lungs.

or keep a baseball bat/crowbar/random big heavy stick around.
or a big machete. most people - no matter how tough they are- wont mess with you if you have a machete in your hand. they'd figure if you're crazy enough to keep a machete behind your desk, you're probably crazy enough to use it on them.

Get a belly gun.

A short barreled revolver. Get a .357 but load .38 special (.357 firearms can chamber them) and fire them to get used to it, then move up to .38+P, then full .357.

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO  :silly:

Then if he gives you shit pull out the hand cannon and tell him to get lost. We have the right to take our safety into our own hands instead of depending on others and deterrents like mace or tazers that ultimately can't work by them self (YOU have to follow up on them or get away) so we should damn well use them.

Personally I wonder if the stand your ground law applies to use of knives as well    anyone know?

So you're effectively telling Anne to be scared off by the criminal element?

Yeah Who, that's an awesome way to go about life.

Why don't you apply the same logic to the people HERE who make you feel unsafe?

If I felt unsafe here or anywhere else or felt my family was in danger I wouldn’t buy machetes and hand guns I would move my family out of harms way.  I just choose not to live that way or in that environment.

Spoken like a sterotypical, well-to-do yuppie. Just move to a "better neighborhood". Many don't have that luxury, so they work with what they've got. Find other ways to stay safe. But, what would you know about that?
Maybe all the people living in unsafe environments could move to your neighborhood. How many million might you be able to squeeze in?
Idiot.

Everybody has access to the same luxury, just depends on your priorities.  There is this girl down near my in-laws (which is a nice neighborhood) who gave up her house in a less safe neighborhood to move here.  She has a condominium unit and her kid gets to attend a dam good school for the tax money.

People in the unsafe neighborhoods choose to live there and tough it out, buy guns and knives to protect themselves.  Others don’t want that for their families and move to a better area.  They may have to go back to school, learn a trade etc. to increase their pay.  But anyone can live pretty much anywhere they want.

Lucky for you this guy sounds like some desperate weirdo.

But if he wanted to rape or kill you, or whatever, a baby monitor in your office is not going to give you anything other than false peace of mind. The guy could of just waited by your car, forced you in and you are both gone, forever.

Take this as a mild wake up call that you must ALWAYS be prepared that some psycho wants to hurt you and take your life, FOR NO REASON.
That's just the way the world is, unfortunately.

Did the police even question/arrest the guy? I'm guessing no...?

Don't ever expect people to come to your aid. You will be gravely dissapointed. .45 in the Drawer is not a bad idea.

sorry buddy but not everyone has the same opprotunities.
http://www.census.gov/hhes/www/poverty/ ... v06hi.html (http://www.census.gov/hhes/www/poverty/poverty06/pov06hi.html)

35.9 million americans live in poverty. if you are struggling to put food on the table, good luck moving and finding a new job and place to live. especially if you're in debt. go to school you say? if youre parents never graduated high school, and you go to a shit school where you're more likely to become a dealer and never learn to read, than go to college. belive it or not, america is not the suburban paradise you imagine. not everyone can own a McMansion, drive a hummer or prius, or send their kids to decent schools. you give that example of the woman who moved and sent her kids to a good school. that is fairly rare in america, it usually only happens in the northeast, around atlanta, parts of texas and california, and thats about it - and even then to go to a decent school you have to be making 30-40 thou/year.  everywhere else low-income neighborhoods have bad schools and are plauged with various other symptoms of poverty. and high income neighborhoods almost always have decent schools. you might find a few low-income areas which dont look as bad - but people pay a price somehow. usually it's with cancer 50 years later because they live next to big industy, or when they find out there living on top of toxic waste.

besides that though, i'm sure anne works there not just because she has to, but because she wants to. maybe she wants to help people with legal problems or whatever she does. just cuz you're a cop, or crab fisherman, or fireman, or any other dangerous job also doesnt mean you're screwed up or anything. you're the fucked up one, who. You manage the danger (with cops- carry guns, vest; fishermen-beacon, lifevest...etc)....you dont run away from your job or neighborhood like a pussy cuz you got scared.
our forefathers gave us the right to carry arms to be able to protect ourselves, because you can never rely on superman/spiderman/the police to instantaneously swoop down and save you whenever you're in danger.

annie get your gun.

Of course and this is why the poverty level is the way it is.  Becoming a drug dealer is a choice, learning to read is a choice, going to college is a choice.  Is it easier for rich kids?  Sure.  But if a kid wants to get out bad enough they will study and do well and move on to college.

Quote
…. you dont run away from your job or neighborhood like a pussy cuz you got scared.

Its not running scared.  Its making a choice for your family.  If a person wants to live there it is fine and many do.  All I am saying is I wouldn’t want that for me or my family.  I have a state police officer living in the same neighborhood as my sister which is a nice area.  I know if he lived in a not so nice area with a school system which wasn’t as nice he could have had a much bigger house and shorter commute, more money in his pockets but he weighed his priorities.

Quote

Yes they did, but it is a choice, not everyone is required to carry a gun.  Not many people carry weapons now a days anyway, except those in the south and poorly educated areas.  We have people living up in Maine in the woods and such who still have a gun in their car, some even teach their kids to shoot.  Totally blows me away.  Anyway that’s a different topic.

But yes digging yourself out of a hole is difficult, but everyone has a personal choice to become what they want to be.  You think we have it bad you should see how it is living in some of the post soviet countries and the obstacles they need to overcome just to feed their families.  If all they had to do is make the choice to learn to read, not do drugs and go to college they would all be in college!!

You think a college education for everyone is the way to end poverty?
Get outta here. You ignorant fool. Your college education didn't teach you much about anything important. Just gave you the financial means to run from unpleasant realities. When starving people start marauding your house, will you pick up a gun? Or feed them?
Have you ever seriously contemplated the absurdity of that comment? It's a myth perpetrated by politicians to distract from the real issues of poverty. Can this country employ 250million college grads? No.

Does your maid, cook, nanny, chauffuer, grounds keeper have college degrees? God forbid everyone have one.. then you'd have to clean your own house, cook your food, drive yourself, mow your yard, care for your own children, and wipe your own ass.

Seriously though, no society can function with a population of all middle-class, degreed people. How fucking boring would that be? Diversity is essential to the functioning of any society. The solution is not more education for everyone, the solution is a living wage. A real living wage, so people don't feel so desparate that they hold up the 7-11 so they can feed their kids, or to buy drugs to anethesize their constant worry and pain.

Go back to college and take some sociology courses. Short of that, educate yourself on the truth of why poverty exists, and the necessity of poverty to the wealthy powers that be.

the who, sure it's a choice. but it's a choice not everyone is free to make. sometimes your path in life is chosen for you, and you cant do jack shit about it.

even for the college educated, there are fewer and fewer choices. things are getting competetive. for starters, it's much harder for college kids to find jobs to pay tuition and survive. it used to be that many menial jobs like landscaping or deliveries were taken by college kids, who would get paid a decent wage for their work. now, employers hire mostly mexicans who get paid half as much. so kids need to find jobs doing other shit..they move into cities. they get internships and work as office bitches. and then they end up (even with a college degree) working at merril or chuck schwab, or some other lame firm, where they get paid 40g/year and never get promoted. by the time they buy houses and get kids, the college educated urbanites working on wall street are all deep in debt and essentially living an equal quality of life as farmer joe in alabama. College is not how you get ahead. you get ahead by being clever and creative at fucking the system. as you may well know, not everyone can be clever and creative. after all, thewho, you do make your living being "clever and creative and fucking the system".

also, as time goes on it gets harder and harder for people to make a decent living doing the same thing they've been doing for years. i dont remember where i read it, but i remember reading somehwere that a college degree now is worth as much as a highschool diploma 25 years ago, and that soon enough people are going to have to get master's and phd's to get to the same socioeconomic level as people with college degrees now. couple that with immigration/outsourcing, inflation, and economic recession, it's going to be tough for middle class americans to continue living the way they are.

case in point: Flint Michigan. thousands of SKILLED autoworkers put into poverty because some schmuck wanted to cut costs. sure, most people moved, but wheather they were ever able to attain that level of income again is questionable, and the people who stayed (because they simply had nowhere else to go - how do you move if you have no job, cant get a job, and are broke?) they ended up living in some of the worst conditions in america. need i say more?

or take something a little more modern - dell customer service. it used to be that americans were the people working the lines, and there were quite a few neighborhoods in america who's economy depended almost entirely on customer service and telemarketing operations. when dell and all the other companies outsourced their labor to india, all those neighborhoods fell apart. the sheniqua latifa jacksons that used to make an honest living working the telephone, are now all on wellfare or selling crack to feed their kids.

Its important to have all the social classes, I agree, but they should be somewhat educated also.  Many of the people on welfare choose to be there either thru ignorance or just choice.  Many are 2nd and 3rd generation welfare families having babies to increase their monthly check, trying to get classified as section 8 to better their housing etc..  If we could get them a better education it would be a huge step on helping the ones who don’t want to be there to get out and give them more options.

If everyone one had a college education the people would make better choices with their money.  They would put a little away each month for retirement, rainy day.  They would make better informed purchases….. I had the opportunity to tour an inner city public school a few years back and I (as well as others I was with) was amazed at the stuff these kids had.  Top of the line cell phones, clothes, $200 sneakers, gold jewelry etc.  The middle class kids don’t have half this stuff.  If the parents were educated to buy lower end products they could squirrel away more in a Roth or 401k program, save for better housing, send their kids to a better school, read to them vs. buying them an xbox etc….it all starts with education.

As I think you mentioned todays college degree is equivalent to a high school degree 30 years ago.

No one is blaming you for anything,Anne, what we were talking about is choices.  People can choose to live and work where they want.  There are many people who dont care where they live, they carry a gun to feel safe and even teach their own kids how to shoot, Ha,Ha,Ha, as nutty as that sounds.
I was just expressing my view that personally I would choose to locate my family to a safe area rather than teach my wife and kids how to use machetes and keep hand guns hidden under the couch.

Guess you'd better get packing then.  As the thread title says, there's nuts everywhere.  Even in some of the most upscale buildings and neighborhoods.  Even behind gated communities.  Even disguising themselves as therapists and counselors with parents paying thousands upon thousands for 'help' for their kid.

If you feel safe where you are then more power to you.  I am not saying you have to move, it seemed from your post that you didn’t enjoy the building/job/people  you come in contact with everyday.  There are people who love that stuff and move to an area where they can carry a gun and dream about some guy giving them crap so they can shoot them.
If buying a baby monitor or gun or machete makes you feel safer than you should do just that, but I would make a different choice that’s all.  Everyone is different.

Yep.  'Splains a lot.

Yeah, it does. Trust your intuition - if it smells like shit - it's probably shit. Nothing Who posts makes any sense - just like CCM's sadistic ravings either. They are here to subvert and disrupt. Ignore them and they will go away eventually.

Like THAT will ever happen here... fat chance!

People like to think they're HOT SHIT or something arguing with tar-baby nitwit who-boy. Have fun, you stupid assholes.

DUH!!!  Because I very often work alone in an office with only one way in or out.  What happened yesterday understandably shook me up for a few minutes.  For you to translate that into I feel unsafe and should move... and quickly, shows your tendency to over-react to situations.  Again, no wonder you shipped your daughter off.  You couldn't handle the pressure and ran, or rather made her run.

Asshole.  Man up.

This Who guy talks about "we" as if he's married. Sure bet that wife of his is glad he practically lives on a computer, so she doesn't have to listen to his mouth running all the time.

That explains why you dont focus on keeping you family safe or care about getting help for your kids if they needed it.  Just tell them to grow up, man up and get over it.  Teach them to shoot a gun.... things are starting to come into perspective a little.  See these are not solutions I would embrace nor encourage others to do.  Doesnt make your kids cowards because they want to avoid danger or ask people for help or walk away from an unsafe situation.

Nope, my kids are fine.  I never shipped them off to be raised by strangers.  YOU need to man up.  If you're expecting to feel safe where-ever you are, I'm afraid you're going to be sorely disappointed.  Again, it explains why you were so quick to send her off.

I said I wanted to get a panic button or a baby monitor.  Last time I shot a gun was when I was a teenager when Gramps was teaching me to shoot up in NC.  I don't think my kids have ever shot a gun.  What an evil, shoot 'em up kind of a girl I am.

Get one of those 100 dB death-screamers if you want a panic button and your ears can tolerate it.

Pressing that lets everyone know what's up (especially the asshole you're using it against, who usually thinks his behavior is normal).

Although I still favor firearms.

Wait, wait.  What?  So, its MY fault?  Who says I live or work in an unsafe neighborhood?  Shit, there's two retired judges who have offices here and I've never heard of even so much as a prowler where I've lived for the past 10 years.  I'm perfectly happy where I am.

What an asshole.

This stupid thread mirrors too many other threads, what is there a "fornits forumula" here or something? someone shares a story about feeling vulnerable. Suddenly it's all her FAULT, and she has to defend her choice of jobs and living situation. Then the best suggestion is to get a GUN.

I see more than a few parallels here to parents and survivors both telling their stories and suddenly it all their FAULT, they defend their actions, and the best suggestion is to get a GUN.

What side of the fence is everyone going to be on when this nut rapes or kills the woman in the office next to Anne, it's determined he is mentally ill, and instead of going to prison the judge orders him into a "program" for rehab???

No... wait.... I already hear it....it's going to be his mom and dad's FAULT for not loving him enough, and we should all get a GUN and shoot them.

Normally I have to go through a long, laborious process of making people hate each other before I start offering weapons. Where these 'programs' are involved, I get to do just the easy part.

What's your needful thing?

Personally I tend to doubt your kids are okay, you dont seem to be very perceptive outside of yourself.  I think you are a little bent out of shape that my daughter turned out okay and that I was able to head off a problem before it affected her future and this bothers you and many others on this forum.

You said you wanted a panic button (but you feel safe).  You may judge my parenting decisions but your radar is off a little.  If my kids said they wanted a panic button of some sort I would take this as they were not feeling quit safe and talk to them about it and try to determine cause,  you on the other hand view this as not a big deal and would just get angry and tell your kids to man up or get over it.  Kids brought up by a mother with this lack of empathy (along with a foul mouth) tend not to turn out okay.  (there are studies on this)
