I contacted the Nevada licensing department this morning to verify the incident. It happened last week. there are no news articles. I posted this under New Info and WWASPS boards.
Last week, on Thursday Sept 27, 2007, an abuse incident involving a hazing of a student happened at Sky View Academy in Nevada. AMAZINGLY, this school has already been notified of a license suspension, and is BEING CLOSED DOWN pending the investigation of this incident. The parents have all been notified of the incident. I contacted the state official today, confirmed the incident and the date it happened, and expressed my support of the closure of this facility. I also alerted her that Majestic Ranch in Utah, one of the facilities the kids are being referred to, is on several watch lists for abuse.
I also made some waves in Utah, and sent Ken Stettler and the Attorney General an email today stating my support of this closure in Nevada, pointing out how appropriate this action was, in comparison to the non-action in Utah in recent years.
If the state of Utah had acted this quickly and appropriately in the deaths of Michelle Sutton, Kristen Chase, Aaron Bacon, Katherine Lank, Ian August, and Elisa Santry, at Summit Quest, Challenger, Northstar Expeditions, Red Rock Ranch Academy, Skyline Journey, Island View Academy, and Outward Bound Wilderness, my son would never have been left to die at Youth Care in Utah. The parents of the kids still there are not even AWARE that Youth Care is under investigation for criminal activity, nor that their license is under review. They just think he got sick and died. I have not been able to get in contact with any of them to give them the real story.
You can read the letter from Sky View to the parents here.

Thanks PM, I know everyone has a different take on all of this, especially in light of what has transpired, but it is good to see the school has stepped up and are notifying the parents of the situation, details on what has happened etc. and offering help in placing the kids in other facilities.
There is such a lack of transparency in industry today and it has become more the norm for businesses to just abruptly close their doors without an explanation, keeping patrons money/assets, leaving loose ends........., forcing the courts to resolve the issues. We see this way too often in the public sector that it is refreshing to see businesses in the therapeutic sector showing a better side.
I hope this gets resolved for the sake of the students as well as the school and the determined root cause effects change throughout the industry, better procedures are put into place , so events like this do not get repeated.

Pitbull Mom,
In November 2004 when the Sudweeks were accused of child abuse by a student at Whitmore Academy - we were not notified by ANY UTAH OFFICIAL that the Sudweeks were being investigated for child abuse.
We were not told that our daughter had been interviewed by the Nephi Police Department; or that she had been interviewed by officials from the Department of Child and Protective Services.
A student's parent--Alana DeGarmo called and informed us. This parent's daughter-Tori - was a former student; who was working at Whitmore Academy as a "counselor."
I later found out that this parent was a volunterr at PURE - owned by Sue Scheff, who referred our family to Whitmore.
I now believe that we were called by Alana DeGarmo; as some form of "damage control for the Sudweeks."
Of course, this parent assured us that the allegations were "false," but we began to check - and we immediately made plans to fly to Utah and remove our daughter from this facility.
Charges were filed, and the owner Cheryl Sudweeks "copped a plea" rather than stand trial; and there is currently a civil case pending against the Sudweeks and Whitmore Academy.
Sue Scheff/PURE; who referred most of the children to Whitmore Academy - continued to refer students to this facility for months; while the Sudweeks were being investigated in this criminal case. It has been reported that Scheff referred parents to Whitmore Academy after Cheryl Sudweeks was charged.
I have no idea if Scheff disclosed the on-going investigation to these parents she referred to Whitmore Academy, or not.
I do know that Scheff never disclosed Mark Sudweeks felony conviction of animal abuse/cruelty in Canada to our family when she referred us to Whitmore Academy; and she was aware of this event.
I do know that Scheff never disclosed that the Sudweeks were evicted from Mexico for running a school there without a license when she referred our family to Whitmore Academy.
Our family was given the impression that our daughter would be traveling to "both of the Sudweeks' schools in Canada and Mexico" during her enrollment at Whitmore Academy. We even signed documents giving permission for our daughter to travel out-of-the-country. BUT, the Sudweeks did not have any "schools" operating in Canada or Mexico when we enrolled our daughter in October 2004.
Disclosure to parents does not appear to be a priority for officials in the State of Utah, Pitbull Mom.

It will be. :=) If people like you and me keep after them, it will be. I have added it to my Utah To Do list.

Only THE WHO would think it would be a good idea to help place these kids in "other facilities" like Majestic Ranch. GMAFB :flame: :flame:

If you read back over the post you will see that I wasn’t embracing any particular placement. I was citing (or pointing out) the cultural change which evidently seems to be taking place here. All too often companies run into difficulty and the first thing they do is think of themselves and their share holders and many times leaving the customers holding the bag. In other words the customers get the shaft.
This seems not to be the case here…..the school has explained what has happened and why (in detail) and is assisting the parents in finding alternate placement for their children…. It seems you don’t agree with one of the schools mentioned and that is your prerogative…. But it isn’t I that is recommending the schools.
For example if a restaurant is shut down for a violation or renovations I think it would be very forward thinking to recommend a few restaurants to their customers to visit while they get thru the difficult time. They may recommend a variety of restaurants (Italian, Greek, French American cuisine etc.), maybe set it up so their coupons are accepted at these places etc., but their intent isn’t that all these restaurants will meet the needs of everyone. They are merely a suggestion.
-
"Cultural change" my ass THE WHO. The only person who should be sent to such facilities as Red River Academy, Cross Creek Academy, Spring Creek Lodge, or Majestic Ranch is YOU.
-
Well of course the shitpit is telling the parents lies about why it closed and trying to move the kids to other shitpits, you idiot. WWASPS needs its money.
Now we just need to smash the rest of the places the kids would be sent until there isn't anything left of WWASPS- not hard, as they're dying already.
Then on to Aspen.

Well of course the shitpit is telling the parents lies about why it closed
So your saying the school made up the story about the hazing and sexual assalt in their letter... they are really just having some temporary financial problems and will reopen soon.
Interesting point of view.

No, about the fact that the staff was in on it and watching every step of the way. Is anyone else dumb enough to buy the "distracted" shit?
Who, you've gotta stop posting here. Everyone else has at least a pair of jacks and you've got a two of clubs, a five of diamonds, a Magic card from Fallen Empires, a slice of plastic-wrapped cheese, and a Pokemon card.

Well, maybe so, but you seem to always stay pat and sit on your jacks....... I ask for three and typically draw 3 ladies...which.... well...leaves you holding your jacks (if you catch my meaning)... you forgot to finish the hand !!
Moral: You should always finish the hand before grabbing the pot....

The only woman you can have is drawn, Who.
There is one exception, but you never did answer.. how was your daughter's cunt after the mindfuck? Inquiring minds want to know.

Transparency my ass.
They didn't have a choice in regard to telling the parents. What happens if a parent contacts licensing and gets the scoop? Then they loose all of them if the news travels to the other parents.
They absolutely are thinking of their own pocketbooks and their shareholders, first and foremost. They haven't been permanently shut down. These are temporary placements until this blows over. Those programs may even be paying a kickback for the interim care they're providing. If they're permanently closed parents could well be stuck holding the bag if pre-paid tuition isn't refunded.
Nothing new, nothing transparent. The same ol murky shit.

Why is nothing about this in the media? I have searcehed all of the local newspapers and I can't find anything about this in them. Are we sure this information is accurate?

Absolutely. I verified it by phone with the licensing department in Nevada. If you take the time to read the news article from ISAC site that I posted here earlier, and here again, it has the contact information, or you can go to the State of Nevada web site.
http://www.isaccorp.org/wwasps/skyviewsuspended.pdf (http://www.isaccorp.org/wwasps/skyviewsuspended.pdf) - News alert about Sky View Adademy closure
You won't find it in the media. The kids involved were under 18, so unless the parents want the story out, it probably won't hit the newspapers. Privacy of minors. Also, many of these programs are in small towns, where the economy is bad, jobs get lost when a program gets closed down, etc. Locals probably want to keep it pretty quiet.
my son DIED, and there were just a few articles, no investigative reporting. "A boy died, it's an isolated case, no one was at fault". Next case.
But that's going to change.
Keep the pressure on. Call Nevada licensing. Call Utah licensing. Contact your legislators. Contact the newspaper. Demand action.
