What is with all the spam on the TTI?
-
I want to say Sue Scheff, but I sure that the Captcha/guest access codes just need to be tweaked a bit.

There is a possibility that this CAPTCHA has a glitch someone mentioned it was previously hacked. Obiovusly if it were completely vulnerable we'd be getting even more spam. But any spam is too much spam. So ill look into another one.. I just dont want to install the last one if possible it was hard for most people to decipher at times.
-
Crap... it is getting flooded with spam. Spammers are creating user names/profiles to deluge forums... What can you do?

Yahoo's CAPTCHA Security Reportedly Broken (http://http://www.informationweek.com/news/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=205900620)
If a new software application posted to the Internet works, it could force Yahoo and other companies to spend yet more money to defend against spammers.

Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO) may soon see a surge in spam coming from Yahoo Mail accounts.
"John Wane," who identifies himself as a Russian security researcher, has posted software that he claims can defeat the CAPTCHA system Yahoo uses to prevent automated registration of free Yahoo Mail accounts.
CAPTCHA stands for Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart. It's a technique that presents an image depicting distorted text that people, but not machines, can identify.
Large e-mail service providers like Google (NSDQ: GOOG), Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT), and Yahoo present CAPTCHA images to users signing up for new accounts to make sure that there's a real person behind the registration information. These companies do so to discourage spammers from using automated methods to register thousands of free online accounts to send spam.
CAPTCHAs are also used to prevent spam in blogs and other online forums, automated ballot stuffing for online polls, and automated password guessing attacks.
"Few months ago, we received information that [a] Yahoo CAPTCHA recognition system exists in the wild with the recognition rate about 30%," Wane says in a blog post. "So we decided to conduct few experiments. We explored Yahoo CAPTCHA and designed a similar system with even better recognition rate (about 35%)."
Various automated methods exist to defeat CAPTCHA schemes but the CAPTCHAs used by Google, Microsoft, and Yahoo have remained difficult for computers to crack.
If the software works as advertised, and it's not clear that it does, it could force Yahoo and other companies to spend yet more money to defend against spammers.
"We are aware of attempts being made toward automated solutions for CAPTCHA images and continue to work on improvements as well as other defenses," a Yahoo spokesperson said in an e-mailed statement.
John Orbeton, strategic product manager for IronPort, said that if the software works, "it could be used for spam. It could be used for phishing. It depends on the motivation of the attacker." The claimed rate of success, 35%, he said, "could create a fairly significant number of e-mail accounts."
It is ironic, Orbeton added, that image-recognition technology, which is being used to defend against the current generation of image spam, should be used by spammers to create more spam.
Not that there's any shortage of the stuff. "In 2007 we saw spam volumes increase 100%," Orbeton said. "That comes out to around 20 spam messages per day for everyone on the planet, whether they have e-mail or not."

Well, for the moment, only registered users ever see capcha. Silly, huh? We're waiting for a new mod for smf. Mean time, all I can do is lock down anon posting. How do you guys think it would work out if I just create a guest login with a public password. That way people can still post as guest, though you won't get the handy name and email address fields so you'll have to id yourself however you please in the body of the post. This would be a stop-gap measure in place only till we have a real solution.
GOD! but do I hate spammers!

Personally, I'm all for it. There is just SO much spam coming in now...
I know Admins have been diligently at work removing it, but here is some that is less recent and appears to have been missed...
Note: this does not include this morning's deposits.

If you do create a guest login, will that allow multiple guest to log in under the same user or will it allow multiple logins????

I think that was supposed to be a stopgap measure in lieu of a functional Captcha (since at first there wasn't one). However, since now there IS a functional Captcha in place, relying on the stopgap measure will probably not be necessary...

Thanks for dealing with most of the previously posted spam list. However, there is still a fair amount of spam hanging around from that period of time before the Captcha was installed. In the spirit of assistance, here is an updated list.

Okay, I did all the dirty work for you. I went and collected all the links, and posted them in a handy dandy list so all you have to do is run through it and do your thing...
It has been six days.
With the sole exception of the duplicate post, duly noted in case there is an issue with that, these are all spam-bot inserts that do not need to be here.
Thank you.

My apologies if my previous post seemed overly pissy. It was not meant to be taken personally by any one person.
I do feel that adjustment issues consequent to such a major move (to SMF) would best be handled by a greater shoulder spread than that feasible by someone operating more-or-less solo. It is simply too much for any one person to handle for long, without experiencing burnout.
I am more than willing to help out, and try to do so as I perceive the need. However, given that I am but a mere plebe here, some communications would be greatly appreciated, and would hopefully go a long way towards making this a smoother transition for many of us.
