Parents Convicted in Baby's Death
ATLANTA (AP) A Superior Court jury in Atlanta convicted a vegan couple of murder and cruelty to children Wednesday in the death of their six-week old, who was fed a diet largely consisting of soy milk and apple juice.
27-year-old Jade Sanders and 31-year-old and Lamont Thomas will receive automatic life sentences for starving the boy, who weighed just 3.5 pounds when he died.
Defense lawyers said the first-time parents did the best they could while adhering to the lifestyle of vegans, who typically use no animal products. They said Sanders and Thomas did not realize the baby, who was born at home, was in danger until minutes before he died.
But prosecutor Mike Carlson told the jury yesterday during closing arguments that they are ``baby killers.''
The jury deliberated about seven hours before returning the guilty verdicts.

Wow...what a couple of dumbasses..  ::huh::
-
Bummer. So many people attempt to be vegetarian/vegan without the slightest clue what an amino acid is or how to combine foods in order to meet protein needs.
Odd, most vegans/vegetarians breast feed their babies. Soymilk won't cut it.

HOW IS A MAMMAL BREASTFEEDING ITS OWN OFFSPRING AGAINST VEGANISM!?!!?!
FUCKING IDIOTS.
Darwinism in action, boys and girls.

I'm assuming that because it was a home birth, there was not conventional health care. So probably also safe too assume there was not any post natal care for the infant. But, one would think that a midwife ... or grandmother ... or neighbor ... would have pointed out that the child was not going to survive on soy milk. Or that the poor thing was failing to thrive.
Apple juice?? Not recommended for infants until at least six months of age. I would like to give this couple the benefit of the doubt and argue pure unadulterated ignorance. But it's a stretch I think.

Bottom line, is if youre so stupid 'veganism' makes you feed your child soymilk instead of your own breastmilk, you probalby did the world a favor by preventing your genetic code from being spread and your stupid ass put in jail.
Jesus CHRIST I can not believe how someone can be that idiotic. I'm really amazed that vegan memetics successfully over-wrote their instincts for that matter!

Vegans breastfeed their kids. I personally have never known one who didn't. There must have been extenuating circumstances, but it does seem someone in their life would've pointed out that soymilk wouldn't provide adequate nutrition.
I agree... apple juice? Sugar water with some chemical Vit C added.
Genuinely ignorant, yes. Murderers, I doubt it. Very unfortunate.

Memes are powerful things, Niles, and are by their very nature capable of overriding instincts. Think about it.
I'm with ya on the Darwinistic aspects of the situation.

For all we know the mother was unable to breast feed.
-
As mother of a 9-week old, and a used-to-be and will-be-again vegan (stopped while pregnant, will continue after done breastfeeding), that is royally fucked up.
There is no way that you don't notice that a 3.5lb baby is in trouble.
Fucked. That's all I have to say.
-
Thank you!
I'm glad someone finally said it.

I have three words "SOY BASED FORMULA".
Its all over the shelves next to milk-based...and it perfectly suitable for vegan lifestyles. In fact its highly unlikely that they didnt recieve samples of it in the mail.
These jackaroos prolly were told this and thought it meant plain ole soy milk.
However, not realizing that a 3.5 pound baby is having trouble....is plain negligent. In case they didnt know, 3.5 pounds is trouble period for an infant.
I have to champion the home birth and health approach however, because my son was born this last March at 5.3 pounds and had a low blood sugar episode. It took ME, the PARENT....and several angry demands that they let me try to feed the baby something OTHER than breastmilk, because he wasnt getting enough obviously. Two hours and one NICU visit later, they finally conceded to let me feed him formula to try and raise his blood sugar. He could have died in the time it took to find an asshole in the hospital who would give the go ahead to hand me a bottle. He hasnt had a single issue since.
The "professionals" can kill your kid just as easily as some jerk-off parent not having the right idea about nutrition.
I've said it before though...I'll start to take veganism seriously when humans are born with nothing but molars.

Carmel~
While I certainly do believe breast milk to be best, there seems to be an ideology that those who do not breast feed (for whatever reason) are deemed second class mothers. Sounds like you encountered a similar ignorance.
I raised two kids on a bottle. They were both very healthy infants and children. They are very healthy adults.

Some simple truths about animals (vis a vis their digestive faculties):
- More protein is needed during active stages of growth (e.g., infancy, adolescence, pregnancy).
- Animal protein is more easily assimilated than vegetable protein due to the absence of a cellulose-based cell wall.
- Vegetarian animals generally have very long digestive tracts with some form of a "fermentation" chamber somewhere along the way to break down the cellulose with the assistance of symbiotic bacteria.
- Vegetarian animals that are fed meat or animal by-products often develop uric acid deposits in their joints and certain organs due to the "naked protein" staying in their digestive tracts too long (and hence experience a shortened lifespan).
- Most omnivores (even primarily carnivorous ones) increase the vegetarian component of their diet and decrease the animal protein component of their diet as they get older.
- Too much protein over a long period of time is hard on the kidneys.
- Humans are considered to be omnivores. Their digestive tracts are intermediate in length compared to strictly vegetarian and carnivore tracts. They utilize certain species of symbiotic bacteria but lack a specialized compartment like a rumen, fermenting more or less en route throughout the intestine. Their mastication tools (teeth) contain representatives of both vegetation grinding and flesh-ripping implements.
Common sense take-home: feed your babies breast milk (preferably) or formula, whether cow or goat or soy based, in their infancy. Introduce more complex foods as they get older and develop an appropriate spectrum of intestinal flora. Eat more vegetables and less meat in your adult years, especially entering old age.

I used both bottle and breast for all three....no problems with either. I think these days as a matter of simplicity for moms, its best to do whatever works for you.
I think this particular instance was more of no one wanting to make a decision or take respnsibility if anything bad should happen....never mind that something bad was already happening. There were no actual pediatricians or neonatologists around, so it took them two hours to dig up a nurse practioner that could make the call....he sat down and proceeded to tell me about his credentials and the hospitals staff while my son laid lethargic in the easy-bake oven....I promptly told him to shut up and give me a bottle for the baby. I guess no one warned him that i was pissed off.
I tell you what though, I laid awake there in the NICU for 24 hours straight and I came out terrified of the things those nurses were saying to each other and the lack of competency that those poor little tiny babies were subject to.
Seriously, if i ever get shot...dont take me to the hospital...they'll kill me!

Thank you for that, Ursus. Very good information.
