For those who were sent to a program before the internet took off how was it that your parents heard about your program?
-
A neighbor. Hyde School places inordinate pressure on parents to recruit others. They are expected to host "Hyde teas," in which a collection of friends, neighbors, and assorted others are invited to hear a spiel about the place. Hyde personnel, alumni, and/or alumni parents also attend to bolster the "presentation."
Ironically, the neighbor's daughter who attended only lasted one year before the family pulled out due to dissatisfaction re. the "brainwashing." My family attended the tea during this year. I ended up suffering a summer plus three years before I was shown the door.

Heh, that's how my parents and I found the fat camp I attended in the early 80s. It was a great place, though.

I don't know.

I wonder if a parent ever found out about a program on fornits, and then still chose to send them? ::puke::

The last time I ever used drugs, I had a bad LSD trip. I called my mother and asked her to pick me up and told her I was on LSD, but that I'd be ok in a few hours. She flipped and drove me to the local hospital where a psychiatrist diagnosed me with "drug-induced psychosis". Of course, that's what LSD does and it goes away after a few hours. However, the psych lady had a niece who was on staff at AARC, so she told my parents that I was an "end-stage user" and that I would die if they didn't immediately put me in AARC. I had only smoked pot 10-15 times and used LSD exactly four times. I'd never been drunk. And that last trip was enough to scare the shit out of me, so I never used drugs again - no thanks to AARC.
Anyway, that's how I ended up there, but apparently my mother had been attending open meeting for several months before that incident. She just obviously wanted a druggie kid for some reason.

The neighbors sent their daughters off to Howie in the Hills and then the Seed. Mom was real impressed with these people, they were jet setters, she was a wannabe. I think it was, to some degree, sort of a Cargo Cult thing.

Our daughter's therapist handed us a glossy brochure.
He had been to a therapist convention and had picked up the brochure. Interesting don't ya think ... that programs are able to set up booths and hawk their wares at a therapist convention?
I think Fornit's should set up shop at these professional symposiums ...

There are therapist conventions?

I never really thought of "fornits" as an organization. This forum is populated by a ranging number of peoples from very different backgrounds and holding very different views on programs. who would represent this physical manifestation of fornits.. do we go by post number, TheWho, he'll want a seat at the booth, Karen probably too, you know to "provide balance".or do you seat side by side thewho and Robert and jujst let people watch an endless debate.. because thats what fornits is basically.

LOL.
Guest - of course you're correct.
My implied meaning was that if programs have representatives at therapeutic conventions, then perhaps it would be useful to have those who make intelligent arguments against long term placement at the same conventions. Ya know ... present a balanced picture.
My apologies. My initial response was clumsy.

Well.. Among other things, Benchmark pulled the "no refunds" shit with the US Dept of State, and they didn't like it. My dad also wrote a very very bad review of the place and chastized Anne to her boss. She resigned shortly afterward. She was personal friends with Benchmark's owner, Jayne Longnecker, and wouldn't be surprised if she was getting referral fees.

Yeah, I never have either. But if anyone were to manifest at a therapist's convention it would have to be Dr. Fucktard. And why not? He's just about exactly as well credentialed as "Dr." Miller Newton. He's just a lot more honest about the whole thing.
