Just stumbled upon this website on accident and cant believe all the memories it brought up. I was part of the "Charleston Crew" and would love to hear from anyone that was in the same time I was.

I was real sad to hear about Charleston John H., I haven't talked really to anyone from that time much since I got out. I keep up with the goings on of Tony and non-Charleston John H., both Sarasota/Venice guys, through my mom being friends with their mom and through another friend of mine.

Like I mentioned before I was pretty close with a bunch of people after I left the program, even stayed in Florida for about 5 years. A relationship of mine ended and I ended up moving back up to NC and have lost touch with EVERYONE! Dave seems to be doing well, he is an attorney now in Charleston.

What was the name of the grizzly adams lookin dude who did sessions with us, sometimes he would bring meditation tapes. He killed himself some time back.

Killed himself? You don't say! I was under the impression that "The Program" cured everything from "dry druggie behavior" (when you never did drugs, but were certain to be a junkie one day) to hardcore physically addicted opiate addicts.

It doesn't surprise me that the staffers are in and out of prison and shit, I think a lot of them were more full of shit than the rest of us. I know guys like Nick and Greg got back in to drugs almost right after they quit being staffers.

I guess I just needed to grow up on my own time and experience life in my young adulthood. I never used a lot or did a bunch of horrific things before I went in. I guess that is why they say "if you slip you will fall harder." I don't regret a lot of my choices that I made, I think it made me a better person now.

I've "relapsed" also, if you take the term literally, I drink ,and have drank since not too long after I got out. But I haven't touched drugs in years upon years, I think I smoked pot once since I got out, mebbe twice and both of them were over 10 years ago, just doesn't interest me really.

I got started over on 5th phase and then Ms. Pete put me on a 21 day "refresher" the week before I was suppose to 7 step. I lived close to JW and our moms talked and hung out a lot so Ms Pete thought there was something "going on" with us.

Yeah, I moved here 3 years ago because my dad had terminal cancer and I wanted to be with him. He actually died last April. I am a teacher but I haven't worked for the past 3 years. I was helping my dad while he was really sick and then I just decided to stay home after my son was born. I am looking into going back to work in the fall, I really miss it. Being a "housewife" is not face paced enough for me, although my 2 kids keep me going none stop!

Wow, someone is going to enjoy tearing me a new one about "personal chat!" Sorry!

yeah, I have always had people from the program in the back of my mind and wondered who is where and doing what. It's kinda sad because I know I mentioned before that I had a whole group of friends that I hung out with for years, and now I have lost all contact and don't know how anyone is doing. I'm sorry, I don't really care who you agree with. As I stated, I started this thread to chat with people that went through the program with me and that is exactly what is going on here. Apparently I don't know you, nor do you know myself because we weren't in the program together. The topic clearly states L.I.F.E.'rs 89-90. If you weren't in the program during that time it doesn't really pertain to you so don't read our "chit chat!"

I spent almost two years there and did what I had to do to get through it and almost don't even want to think about it and then I have a certain amount of curiousity about some of the people that went through their phases with me. I am disappointed to hear about Yvette and Melissa. I am not surprised but I am still disappointed. I think the main person that I want to know what happened to was Mandy. I know she was part of the Charleston group. At least she came from the area. Who is this Phil guy? I don't remember him at all.

When I moved away, she was one of the few people that I kept in touch with. She would send me these incredible drawings and letters. She was a really sweet person. I used to keep in touch with the mother of the family that she lived with (Jana Bailey and her mom, Kay). I have been looking for the pictures of my 16th birthday. I have pictures of the entire rap room and most of the faces of the kids that were there that day. I know that I didn't throw those away when I threw away all of my other life stuff.

I'm not still angry about what happened 20 or more years ago. I'm angry about the fact that the people who started and perpetuated these abusive mindrape mills are actually effecting public policy today. That's a frightening enough thought.

She further stated that several former program counselors and clients had told her that juveniles have been mistreated while in the program. A former program volunteer told a Times reporter in December 1977 that she, Hartz and others once witnessed Mrs. Petermann maliciously kicking a youth who was passively resisting Straight officials.

He had reportedly said that "cussing and swearing" in therapy sessions to force clients to bare their true feelings--one of the criticisms of The Seed--is the product of "untrained, unsupervised and unqualified staff--it’s not going to happen here."

Ms. Petermann was not a high school graduate but a 1978 report card on her by the board of directors noted "[she] has 3 ½ years experience in a drug program."

Since Director Hartz had no special training in The Seed's therapeutic methods, it would appear to this writer that much of the training that Jim Hartz and Helen Petermann received on The Seed's therapeutic methods would have to have come from the six young Seed graduates.

The 1978 report had noted that Ms. Petermann is well read in her work having read I'm OK, You're OK, Primal Scream, Games People Play, Passages, Your Erroneous Zones, I Never Promised You a Rose Garden, Psychology--An Introduction, and We Mainline Dreams.

Three resigned in mass in August 1977 and made a joint statement that, neither Hartz nor Petermann "have the necessary qualifications to rehabilitate preteens or teens who have a drug or alcohol problem". They concluded, "we feel we cannot recommend Straight Inc. to our friends or citizens of our community." Carolyn Henson was the wife of Straight board member L. Hap Henson and a program volunteer for Straight. [/color]

In 1984 Helen Petermann teamed up with one Barbara Griffith, M.A., LIFE’s Director of Prevention and Education, and some other staffers at LIFE to write the paper, "Effective early intervention for adolescents harmfully involved in alcohol and drugs" for The Journal of the Florida Medical Association, Inc., Apr 1984, Vol 71, No. 4. Barbara Griffith would leave LIFE and head for Lakeworth, Florida to help setup another second generation Straight called Growing Together which operates to this day. Meanwhile Dr. Ross left KIDS in Hebron and moved to Lexington, Kentucky to set up Possibilities Unlimited, Inc.
