Police: 3 pregnant teens attack home director; flee in stolen van
AMERICAN FORK, Utah - Three pregnant teens living in a group home, including one from Illinois, whacked the director in the head with a frying pan, tied her up and then fled in a stolen minivan, police said.
The director, who was tied up with power cords Tuesday, eventually broke free and called police, police Sgt. Shauna Greening said. She also freed another pregnant teen tied up in the attack, she said.
Authorities believed the teens _ two 15-year-olds and one 16-year-old _ left the state and a search was under way. Police said the teens also stole the director's purse, checkbook, credit cards, cell phone and video camera.
The motive wasn't clear. Parents of the girls, who are from Illinois, California and Texas, were notified, police said.
The New Hope home for struggling pregnant teens is in Utah County, about 30 miles south of Salt Lake City. Pregnant teens are typically sent there by parents to get away from problems with drugs or boyfriends, and they attend class and learn about prenatal care, childbirth and adoption while staying at the home, according to police.
A call by The Associated Press to a phone number listed for New Hope went unanswered Thursday.
But the owner, Spencer Moody, tearfully told a Salt Lake City TV station that he would close the rural home. He said about two dozen girls had given birth after living at New Hope.
"We've had a lot of parents call and thank us for giving their girls back," Moody told KTVX-TV.
Greening would not release the teens' hometowns or the name of the director, but said the director "never had any indication that anything like this was going to happen. They were all sitting around doing homework before the attack occurred."

Oh dear.
That's just not going to end well.
Not well at all. I hope they get good attorneys.
-
The fuck are you talking about, Aardvark?! It already DID end well!
But the owner, Spencer Moody, tearfully told a Salt Lake City TV station that he would close the rural home.
They whacked that bitch in the head so hard, they knocked her boss clear out of the fucking industry!!
Excellent work, ladies. :nworthy:
-
yes, well I dident notice, and you replied to mine dident you, not hers, so, thank you have a good night.
Yeah, but mine had a funnier subject heading.
::bwahaha:: :wink:
Has anyone ever heard of New Hope?

That sort of thing is bound to happen at those chickenshit podunk operations!
Their parents should have taken the time to seek out professionals like us!

I suppose that three pregnant girls who will inevitably wind up serving prison sentances qualifies as acceptable collateral damage to you MGDP?
-
They're pregnant juveniles, Aardvark. They'll probably get off easy, especially given the circumstances (torture pit). It'll all come out at trial, and that's probably why the owner closed it in advance.
The worst thing that could have happened to them was for them to stay there and have their children in that place.
And not only did their actions put this facility away, they also gave hope and inspiration to everyone else in these places.
So yes, Aardvark- Acceptable. More than acceptable. These heroines don't need to be second-guessed on the Internet.
-

This represents the absolute powerlessness and fear of people who feel they have no choices. Take a kid, lock her up in a facility where she's routinely devalued, take away hope and accountability, and this is the result you get!
Ask yourself what kind of abject terror makes a young girl behave like this?
These programs create violence in response to coercion. This is why we see normally passive kids assaulting staff at these places: they're scared and hopeless.
Why not whack your captor upside the head with a fry pan when you feel you've nothing left to lose???
-
Guys let's be realistic about this. They could have brained Hitler, Pol Pot or Satan himself and the American Juvenile justice system would still fist them.
-
Theyre juveniles, the didn't kill anbody, they will be alright.
We should add this strategy to the running away thread. If I remember correctly prevailing wisdom was going against taking a car.. but it seemed to work here? Frying pan to the head stealing car strategy seems effective.
So why is the owner closing the place I didn't really get that part of the story?
What do parents and staff think coercive incarceration is goign to bring? You think the kids are going to come back and thank you like regular teachers or bring apples? Yeah.. maybe apples laced with LSD so they can run while you freak out. I dont know why people are so naive.
-
So why is the owner closing the place I didn't really get that part of the story?
Two reasons.
1. The details of the abusive institution will all come out at trial.
2. The other girls now know what to do. Instead of facing a facility full of pregnant traumatized young girls, they now have a facility full of traumatized young girls who will instinctively do anything to protect their babies from this, and now know exactly how to do that. Those three girls' actions galvanized everyone else. The owner can no longer keep the place open under such circumstances as he doesn't have the money to hire who'd be needed to keep them there by main force.

Spencer Moody - Former Executive Director of Woodland Hills, another home for pregnant girls.

Turns out New Hope is on probation until the end of this month. This "probationary" period is common for new start ups in Utah.

-
FYI - he's only licensed for 4 girls.
-
Capacity: 4
Hmm. Maybe that's why is shut down? 75% of his customer base is gone?
-
Wait a minute...
Capacity 4?
Oh. Never mind what I said above then. 3./4ths of their population did this, so no wonder he'd close.
Damn, G420 beat me to it.
-
But, this isn't a new facility. It didn't say why the program was on probation?
Pregnant girls flee maternity home
Teens beat, tie up director and steal her van, cell, credit cards

AMERICAN FORK - After three pregnant teenagers hit their group home director over the head with a frying pan and tied her up, one of them reportedly told the woman, "You're a good person. We just need to do what we need to do."
The teens stole her keys and her van.
That was Tuesday morning - the last time anyone reported seeing the girls.
Police are trying to arrest them for aggravated assault and kidnapping. Spencer Moody, the owner of the group home, whose wife was assaulted by the teens, said Thursday he's worried about the girls' well-being.
"We're just hoping they're found OK," Moody said.
The girls - ages 15 and 16 and from Illinois, Texas and California - are "not real far along" in their pregnancy, Moody said. He and American Fork police on Thursday released few other details about the three and would not disclose their names or photographs.
The teens ran away from the New Hope Maternity Home, a large red brick house at the end of a winding private lane on the north side of American Fork. Moody, 53, and his wife, Jana Moody, have operated the home for about three years, he said, and host pregnant teenagers whose parents want to remove them from friends and other influences. The girls are not locked inside the home.
The home is licensed by the state and provides the teens with a high school curriculum, medical care, parenting lessons and counsels them on adoption, according to its Web site. [Wonder if they're pressured to adopt their babies? Could have something to do with it.]
Spencer Moody said teens usually arrive after a few weeks of pregnancy and remain at the home until they have given birth at a hospital in Utah Valley.
Choking up, Spencer Moody told reporters Thursday, "We've had a lot of parents call us and thank us for giving their girls back the way they used to be. We haven't had one negative experience with a girl."
The Moodys, who operate the home together, do not accept teens who they think might pose behavior problems, Spencer Moody said, but most girls are not happy to be at the home when they first arrive.
On Tuesday, while Spencer Moody was at his teaching job in Spanish Fork, one of the teens hit Jana Moody over the head with a frying pan, then used electrical cords and duct tape to tie her up, Spencer Moody and police said. They also put a sock in her mouth and wrapped her mouth in duct tape, said American Fork police Sgt. Shauna Greening
The teenagers stole Jana Moody's purse, credit cards, cell phone, video camera and car keys, Greening said.
Spencer Moody said one of the girls told his wife she was a good person before the three left in the van.
Jana Moody was able to free herself. She went upstairs and found another girl, a 17-year-old, who also was tied up, Greening said. Jana Moody freed that teen and began walking to find a telephone.
The group home owner walked to the end of her drive to a trailer that serves as offices for a residential construction business.
"She was pretty emotional," said Brent Wilkinson, who runs the business with his father and brother and was in the trailer when Jana Moody arrived. "She had a lot of adrenaline pumping, but I thought she was very composed, given the circumstances."
Spencer Moody said he and his wife had no indication the teens were planning the attack and escape nor were there any prior confrontations with the girls. He said he believe the teens wanted the van so they could return home.
Greening said the teens might have fled to one of their home states. Police in American Fork have placed alerts with other agencies.
The teens are described as:
* One girl is 15 years old, 5-foot-2, 103 pounds, brown hair, blue-green eyes and a pierced belly button.
* The second girl is also 15 years old, 5-foot-5, 152 pounds, brown hair and eyes, a piercing in each ear, a scar between her eyes and moles on her left leg and back.
* The third girl is 16, about 5 foot 7, 153 pounds, brown hair, green eyes, a piercing in each ear and a scar on her forehead.
Spencer Moody said his wife was not seriously injured. But the couple likely will quit operating their group home.
"After this, we've decided it's the end of it," he said.
Wilkinson's brother, Richard Wilkinson, said he hopes the Moodys continue the home.
"They have a lot to contribute to these young ladies," he said.

I hope they're never found.
-
You sure the facility isn't new? By new I mean applied for a license 6 months ago?
-
The article said they'd operated for 3 years, but yes, possible that they just got legal recently.
-
Well, Moody was the executive director of woodland hills. Wonder why he left?
-
They finally figured out how noble it is to help people who don't want help... it isn't.

Go leave your comments if you want people to hear the other side of the story. So far it's all rah, rah, rah for the program and the owners!

Mother worried about runaway pregnant teens
The Associated Press
Article Last Updated: 01/23/2007 11:15:32 AM MST
Posted: 6:25 AM- The mother of one of the three pregnant teenagers sought in an attack on a woman who runs a maternity home says she's very frightened for her daughter.
Gina Castro, who lives in Chicago, says she believes her 16-year-old daughter is in California but has no confirmation of that.
The 16-year-old and two 15-year-olds took off January 16th from the New Hope maternity home in American Fork after the caretaker, Jana Moody, was hit in the head with a frying pan and tied up with electrical cord. Her van, credit card, checkbook and cell phone were stolen.
American Fork Police Chief Lance Call says police are watching for use of the missing credit card and checks.
He says if the girls have gotten rid of Moody's car and stay out of sight, it might be awhile before they're found.
Castro suspects that her daughter doesn't want to give up the baby for adoption once it is born -- something friends and family have urged her to do. ~~
Well, there ya go. Wondering if this home makes money helping place these 'unwanted' babies?
-
My 1st thought deborah, was that the girls are sent away so the family have no shame and come back unpregnant, like in the days a girl was sent to live with her Aunty on the coast
"Police are trying to arrest them for aggravated assault and kidnapping."
Right, but it's okay when it's the other way round yes?
-
Indeed. Unpregnant and childless. Just swoosh it away.

You forgot the bit where 'it' is never to be mentioned again :( I hope these girls get proper counselling over their pending grieving process, what a very cruel thing to do
-
I hope these girls are found and able to reconcile with their families. I can not imagine anything more terrifying than being 15, in trouble with law, pregnant and homeless. Someone needs to help these poor girls to sort things out!
-

That ain't necessarily so. There was a girl in Straight who threw a table through a plate glass window and assaulted her foster parents during an escape. They tried pressing charges, but the judge wanted to know why any of that was necessary for her escape, seeing as how Straight was not licensed as a detention facility. This girl was of age and court ordered, too, behind a homicide conviction of some sort.
I hope they get good lawyers!

Uh, I can. How about being returned to tender care of that ever loving family that had you kidnapped and held captive in order to steal your unborn baby?
The last time I split I was all set to grab a cop's service weapon and commit felony assault on an officer just to make sure he'd have to press charges and keep in in the juvy system rather than go back to Straight. Thank GOD the cop didn't try to make me go w/ my mom or that's the way it would have gone.

I wouldnt advocate "making them" go anywhere. obviously if nothing else they would be mre likely to run away and be right back to where they started! But being on the street at 15 and pregnant is pretty undesirable! I wonder if there are any wider relatives who would take these girls in and If possible help them to talk to their parents
-
I hope they all hook up with good people to take care of them too. But believe me when I tell you I went through some fucking horrendous experiences when I was on the lamb from the program. I mean horrible. I always knew at any time I could just call home and my mom would buy me a plane ticket from anywhere or turn myself in to the police and go cargo rate right back from whence I had come. Never chose to do that, even the morning after some frat boys dosed my drink.
Having your mind and identity violated really is that horrible.
