Title: Procrastination Thread
Post by: try another castle on January 17, 2007, 04:46:36 AM
Post what you should be doing right now, instead of dicking around on the interwebs.

1. Shoot reference footage of me doing something with a box. This is with a camera I still have not read the instructions to.
2. Draw thumbnails of "golden poses" from the reference footage
3. Recreate "golden poses" in Maya with the assigned rig.

When this is due:
Today at 1pm.

Amount that I care, on a scale from 1-10:

0

(Which, coincidentally, is also going to be the grade I'm getting tomorrow.)

I shouldn't be surfing fornits for sure when I should be busy looking for Universities with a MA program. Yet... dear me.. here I am.  Still it is only an hour break between two classes so I shouldn't be to motivated to overachieve.

Do you have any footage of you doing something with a box? Could save me some time.

I dont really know what I should be doing.. sleeping I guess. I fell asleep yesterday and slept all day for some reason and now I am definitely not tired and just waiting for the sun to come up so I can say, hello sun, how are you today? Burning bright as usual I see, what a wonderful sight indeed.

Don't tell me you're going into the medical field; that's a scary thought!

No footage but I have ideas.

What I would do is put a jar of mayonaise in the box and write on the side a note that says, "The Presidential Storage container for his policy on Iraq".  This will not only get you points for bashing on a republican, but it will also be construed as amusing.

I'm not sure I fully get the humor, but it seems funny in a surreal sort of way. I like the "Great Moments in Presidential Speeches" that they have on the Letterman show. Has anyone seen that?  ::bwahaha::

Yes, it looks that way. I only watch it some nights.

amen.  The key to good art school grades = flame republicans incessantly.  Military-industrial complex and/or global warming are sure winners as well.  "Free the weed!" works great with most professors.

IE:  I did an animation last year on the subject of iraq, oil, and global warming.  I got a 100.  I did the thing in about two weeks using mostly recycled test sequences carefully stitched together in AE. Funny thing is, it's actually pretty damn good (sometimes spontaneity (*procrastination*)) forces you to focus on what's really important.

In other words, let's not let the Democrats so easily off the hook either!! Both parties SUCK, just in different ways. A friend of mine was saying that he always votes (on the local level) AGAINST whichever party is the bloated party in that state. This balances things out and keeps either one of them from becoming too powerful. Made a lot of sense to me.

FIGHT THE POWER OF GOVERNMENT, and don't fall for the "good-cop, bad-cop" routine....

Do you any of you ever feel like you're too smart for the room?

[whinging]I'm in class now, supposed to be refining my shot. Of course, I don't have a shot, so I don't have anything to refine, and I don't have reference footage, so I can't start the blocking. I have royally screwed myself in this regard. I think this is the first time I have never had anything to show for myself when work was due.

For some reason, I just stopped caring. I used to be a dynamite student. 4.0 GPA. Last quarter I went on medical leave for depression and anxiety. I'm back this quarter, and I just don't give a crap. [/whigning]

Time for a beer!

is your professor making you do one of those "step on the box" assignments, or "carry the box".  It's pretty standard stuff.  Always something with a fucking box...  Fuck the box...   hey.  that's an idea.  have your charachter fuck the box.  he said something creative right!?!?

Here's an idea:  3d is addictive.  Maya...  is not my drug of choice (too many bugs), but you do get hooked after a while of using any 3d app.  It sounds like your work bores the fuck out of you, and in part i blame that on your professor...

Here's what i did:  get hooked on 3d, create lots of stuff, get used to the program (computer program ... gooooood program... well maybe not maya) etc...  get hooked on it.  Then when the time comes to do some really stupid assignment you can crank it out in hours, not days.  Or if you have a cool professor sometimes you can just substitute what you've been doing on the side (independant study style).

Jeez.  If you don't like what you're doing, if you don't really like it...  either get hooked on it, or your career is going to be really boring (guaranteed if you work with the govt (or contractors)... so avoid that).

I've tried to get hooked on it. I used to be. It's a motivation problem. I haven't even done any of my regular artwork and cartoons in ages, let alone 3D.

My professors are really good. Most of them have spent a considerable amount of time in the industry. My current advanced character animation teacher worked with pixar, PDI, and on the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and she's a very good teacher. The box assignment is simply to have the character work with a prop. The standard lift exercise is a beginning course. This is more along the lines of trying to tell a story, as well as use reference footage to get the timing and weight correct.

In a perfect world, I would be doing 2D. I LOVE 2D. However, I also don't feel like living in India or Korea, which is where it's all done, now.

For some reason, the idea of sitting around all day simply doing UV unwrapping is starting to sound more appealing. Monotonous drudgery where I don't have to think much. One step up from carving gnomes in my house.

Of course, then I would go home and have dreams about untangling string.

Tip:  Never, ever, ever do your UV unwrapping in maya.  It will take forever.  Maya's UV tools suck.  It sounds stupid, but try using Blender for UV unwrapping.  Just export from maya to obj, do the UV unwrapping in Blender, and export back...

Blender has this really neat feature called LCSM live unwrapping.  The neat thing is you can drag the pinned UVs in realtime.  Think of it as "assisted" or "semi-automatic" uv unwrapping.

Hmm... there was a 3d world article a while back covering it...  if i find it i'll scan it and PM you a link to the scans.
