Title: VIRUS - "Network Security Update"
Post by: Froderik on April 01, 2003, 10:41:00 PM
Rather than repeat (retype) myself, I've pasted in
this email I just got back from the layman's computer guru, Dan Gookin:

***************************

Eagle eye! You're very good! I've well-trained you.

I haven't read anything about this yet, but my guess is that it's the
Next Big Virus.

Give yourself a pat on the back for stopping it. You make me proud!

Best,
DAN

>Dan - I'm sending this again sans attached file >in case the other one didn't come thru for >whatever reason. I got this message in my Yahoo >account. The attachment was a file called >Q161127.exe. The built-in NAV on Yahoo said that >it detected a virus. (W32.Gibe.B@mm)
>No, I did not run it anyway, lol. Do you know if this is a virus? (It seemed very legit.)
>
>Thanks, Alex

Title: VIRUS - "Network Security Update"
Post by: 85 Day Jerk on April 02, 2003, 02:23:00 AM
When I turned on my PC last Sunday night, I got a prompt about the clock being set ahead an hour for daylight savings time.  I thought nothing of it and later went around and set all my clocks ahead one hour before I went to bed.
The next day I had a meeting with a legal advisor at a neighborhood diner and wound up going there an hour early.  I mentioned to the waitress that they had forgotten to set the clock by the register to daylight savings time and she looked at me like I was crazy.
Later when I went to reset my computer clock to the right time, I found that I was on Grenwich Mean Time and not Eastern Standard Time.  The question is this, did I do something to make this happen, or could a hacker have done this as an April Fools prank? (I was fooled by it)

I guess that it could be some prank, I don't know...

Two questions:

1. Did this prompt seem to come from your local machine?

2. Is your computer's date set to the correct date? (today's)
