Are there any records available on the numbers of kids who went through straight?

666 X 7 X 3 X 5

That's a good question- one that I'm sure there's an answer to.

Why do you ask?
You don't sound like you were even in any sort of program as another post you made inquired about what the term "copping out" meant?
Why do you ask?

She's writing a book. No kidding, not being snide, she really is.
OzGal, all we have are estimates. Wes Fager has some hard, but incomplete numbers. I'm guessing somewhere between 50 and 100 thousand of us went through Straight, Inc. between `76 and `93 while it was operating under that name. But that's just a rough guess.
-
Then again, who isn't writing a book?
When outsiders look in, I feel that much more like a lab rat. Just a personal thing, I am so much more into telling my own story than trying to explain it to others with lofty intentions.

Nothing wrong with that!

beware of rough calculation ahead  :
17 years, give or take 9 locations. Some had average group sizes of 300, some were more like 150 to 200, then some were even smaller. So, average for the whole 9 would conceivably run around 180 or, so that's about 9x180=1620x17=27,540.
27,540 could be a reasonable guesstimate. Keep in mind that Sembler claims only 12,000 successful graduates and current programs base their success rates on 51% of the successful graduates responding to surveys, etc. Rumor has it that KHK has 10 or fewer clients these days.
-
one other way would be to multiply that 27,540 by $4,000 which was the average cost in the early years and that comes up to $110,160,000 which is close to the $100,000,000 that has been reported on various sites to be what straight inc earned over the 17 years it was called that name.
-
Does this include people who were full of shit?

First of all if you are really writing some sort of book and were never in the program, you really do need to get your facts 'STRAIGHT'. There were no "students" in the program, it wasn't a school. An accurate is not possible and anything less than accurate shouldn't be published, even as an estimate. If I were involved in such a project, I wouldn't include guesswork if you want to be be taken seriously.
-
Yes, it might be better to say, "There were at least x amt . . . " and give a known number.[/i]

That's right, druggie- it WASN'T a school; it was a goddamn DRUG REHAB and you put yourself there! :flame:

I agree on the "students" reference. Also, if there were any "records" of any type left over from Straight....our activism against the perpetrators would be very different indeed.
I think there were some 50K or more....not as much as 100, but more than 27. Out of some 5-6 hundred kids I know went in and out the Dallas doors in the roughly 3-4 year time reference I was aware of....only about 10-12 of them ever have posted here more than a few times. So if thats any indication of the awareness of who was in, thats a sad deficit. Being that therent arent any records left that anyone outside of the straight-Nazi camp are ever gonna see....I dont think its too far off, the higher estimates I mean.

I am discovering that it is hard to get any reliable numbers for the industry in general. I figured that asking around about the nombers for one of the earlier programmes like straight may be a starting point. obviously i would not write anything about numbers or %s based solely on what people have told me on a general internet forum. I was really after a starting point.
To the person who said they feel like a lab rat. i really am sorry if the question was offensive to you. Please bear in mind that almost nothing is known of this industry outside of the USA. This is why i am trying to write on it. Not to make anyone's life any worse or to try an pressure anyone who does not wish to to explain themselves to me. You are right. I did not go through any programmes because we dont have them here. hence asking about the vernacular from time to time.
-
Good luck on your journey. The thing of it it is...almost nothing is known about these programs INSIDE the USA either. Not the reality of them. Hope we can help!
-
Nothing is really known about this "industry" (?) inside the USA, either, OzGirl. It's these "misses" that make me think the story would be so much better coming from someone that experienced the program firsthand. I hate to sound discouraging or against your project, but I think what is worse than NO information about the program is misinformation about something that hits so close to home for so many of us.

Well said, Doctor.
