What the hell is a life book?

Life Book doesn't sound like a Regulatory term, so it appears that FLCs Program Statement claims something to the effect that each participant, under FLCs Needs and Services Plan, would be given a Life Book, which might be a journal and/or family photo album.
Some apparently did not have one and the State was requiring them to fulfill their obligation, as stated in the Program Statement.

It's one thing to ignore state regs, but why can't they follow their own policies that they created?

"He who's name is not written in the Book of Life shall be cast into the lake of fire..."  Revelations, I think.

BEWARE OF THIS PROGRAM
EMOTIONALLY/PSYCHOLOGICALLY ABUSIVE.
Poorly regulated
Kids as young as 12 expected to do physical labor in excess
Forced to overeat
"Success stories" did not last
most kids who GRADUATED ended up back on drugs or pregnant.
Abusive "therapy"
Brainwash tactics
Cut off from communication with friends and family the first few months
Pointless physical punishment
... List goes on and on.

I am a friend of Survivor's. I can confirm that is all true. I was at FLC from March 2004 - October 2005. I graduated high school from there. I chose not to graduate the program.

This is not the same Family Life Center. The one listed in that document is in Hemet.

Oh, this place. Family Life Center is probably the most dangerous residential treatment center that I've ever encountered.

Every kid I've seen enter this place was begging to be sent to another program, until finally they start getting used to the day-to-day abnormalities of this place, and give up. At this point, they may even begin to like the abuse they're receiving.

It's pretty crazy. Their tactics involve stripping the individuals of their.. well, individuality. Dress code requires extremely baggy clothing [i'm super tiny and they had me wearing size 7 pants, as opposed to the size 1 i was wearing beforehand. ] and it's often bought for you, unless you're in the "satellite" program [which i will explain in a second]

you start off in one of the two houses on the "residence". this is the main campus where everyone goes to school. six girls per house.. the res is terrible. you can't put anything on your walls, have your own blankets, or own more than three stuffed animals.

if you're lucky, and are following all their little rules, then you MIGHT be able to move to the one of the elite sattelite houses. this was the hardest part for me, because they represent what was taken away from us: a normal life. you can listen to music, if you're at the right level.
you can cook your own food, drink soda sometimes, decorate your room, and GO ON OUTINGS!

yeah. you can't go anywhere on the res. the only contact we got with the outside world was on wednesday hiking day trips.

we weren't even allowed to say hi to anyone we saw. :/

other bothersome things:
no talking during meals.
no music on "the res"
structured days from wake-up to bedtime, with 30 mins free time in between. this is good for some people, sure, but it leads to failure upon leaving the situation
physical consequences for minor things - taking off seatbelt too early = 500 jumping jacks and 500 push-ups
opportunities for "junior staffing" leads to little trust between peers

AND LOTS MORE, but the worst thing in my opinion?

they read your effin diary.

I have a relative who has been placed here about four months ago.  We finally just got confirmation of this.  Are the students allowed to have visitors?  I need to get information.  The family is not speaking to each other because of the reprehensible behavior.  An innocent child needs our help.

I believe that it would be difficult to visit a relative unless you are the custorial parents who are their real client. In many families some part of the family is critic against the desicion to place a child in treatment. It may be so that the family find that the parents is the one who is in need for treatment. But a program needs to get bills paid so they choose to have the parents as the only one who is contacting the kid, so I would advice you to get the parents to sign you on to the approved list the child may be in contact with out in the real world. Otherwise it is not possible to get any contact with the child in treatment.

I searched a little and found this article with a number of comments both positive and negative (http://http://www.troubledteenblog.com/family-life-center-petaluma-ca-adolescent-residential-treatment/)

I also found this one (http://http://www.yelp.com/biz/family-life-center-petaluma):

Quote
If you would like your kid to be forced to scream and cry and be totally hysterical while being made to confess their sins and 'share' their life story by a therapist who appears to get his rocks off on watching this mass hysteria take place , go here. Some kind of 'school' modelled on Gestalt therapy. It has a high sound proof wall around it to drown out the crying and exorcism that take place here. Because if people knew, they might be sued.

If at all possible get the child *his own* attorney. This might depend on jurisdiction.
