Title: Who was going to the med cart and what were they getting?
Post by: Anonymous on August 24, 2006, 02:54:52 PM
I never went to the med cart much, so I am curious who was and what they were getting. If you put the approx time period and which Straight you were in that would be good because I think certain times and branches had different practices.

The med cart in Richardson, it was crazy cause I dont think anyone took meds until i was there about a month. When the med cart did come out, only a few people went. I saw it maybe a week and then it disapeared again. A few months later it came back out and tons of people were on meds. I just find it strange that it would leave for weeks at a time. I new one girl who had severe asthma. She had those lil glass viles of medicine to put in this machine at the host home, we would all have to sit around the table while she did it and because she was on 1st phase she couldnt break open the glass vile, she had to tell the upper phaser how to do it. She couldnt hold her inhaler on 1st phase, she still had to motivate and she had a very hard time breathing. She would lift her hand for an upper phaser to get it for her. I rarely ever saw her be able to get it while being in  group.

Hmmm....mostly anti-depressants.  I remember one girl who was my newcomer for a while coming home with a massive cocktail of lithium, prozac and god knows what else. As far as I know, no one was put on AD's after entering the program, they were only allowed to continue them if they had them when they came in.   Also, girls got Naproxen for cramps if they wanted.  Loads of Monistat for yeast infections. Kwell shampoo for crabs and lice.  There was a scabies outbreak a few times, on the guys side.  Bandages or neosporin for the pickers and cutters.

Med-cart was used as a point to put in for a withdrawl from the program.  We had a bloated group, somwhere between 150-225 kids at any given point counting the massive influx of kids from California who got transferred when it shut down.  So Meds always took a while.  The doctor only ever came to the building to do new intake girls pap-smears, it was always the nurse who divied up the loot.

A word on the pap-smears, I had never had one until i went into Straight and i came away from that always terrified that a doctor was gonna jam a finger up my ass whenever i got one.  As it turns out I guess it was standard procedure to look for that desperate last minute stash of coke I never had done before.  Normally, docs dont do that special little procedure. Assholes.

Just so you know, a rectal exam is part of a normal gyn exam. If your doc can palpate your ovaries and uterus completely when he/she does your vaginal exam, then they might skip the rectal, but most doc's I know still do it to be sure they don't miss a mass that can be in the posterior part of your pelvis.

I dont remember if I ever got meds in Str8...I can tell you though that staff (as in Jr or Sr) doled them out while sitting in a chair with a plastic tub of meds in their lap....we did not have a cart nor did a doctor or nurse ever pass out meds. Also, not many people were allowed to get meds of any kind there....the lines for meds were not very long....and when I was there the group ranged between 160 to 200+ kids. The only thing I remember being passed out in the med line is inhalers. That is not that say that is the only thing passed out...just all I remember for certain.
This was in Cincy 84-86.

That's how I remember it in SP.  The blue box on someone's lap in back of group.  I was on tylenol 3 when I came in, had a continuous prescription but that was downgraded to motrin immediately and then taken away altogether in about 2 weeks.  I stopped my period for the entire time I was in there so I ended up not needing it, but damn.  Never once did I see a medical professional, nurse, doc or otherwise.  Not once.  Even when I got chicken pox.

Anyone from SP remember Bob with the tatoos on his forearms?  Had them sliced off and got some antibiotics and tylenol.  Fuckers. :flame:

I got to the Doctor once... After months of horrific pain and other symptoms.. I think L@F might have taken me?? I Wish I could remember the Mom who drove.. Hrmm.  Ultimately The prescribed treatment (anitbiotics, follow up appointments) were (or was) never followed through with once I returned to the building. Then the real kicker was, when I was taken out of the program, Because of Straight my parents didn't believe I had a medical issue until I was married and lost my first baby.. Hence leading to 14+ surgeries....THANKS Straight Inc!

The only meds I ever got were the brown granule things for constipation...but only after the rectal exam...Dr. Pug was an evil, sick man... I'd love to visit his office..

I do remember alot of kids on meds for severe acne and asthma though.

~WD

Oh and I have a ton of GYN exams... NOT ONE, except Dr. Pug ever put anything in my rectum. I'll have to ask my best friend who is a Labor and Delivery nurse.... If they do that normally, she has given thousands of exams.. surely she would know.

In all the years I have had gyn exams after str8...I never have had a rectal as part of the exam...so as far as I know they are not normally done during a gyn exam. Sounds like the str8 doctors had another agenda if you ask me.

By "SP" do you mean Springfield ??  If so then I remember him.  He was an older cat, about 25.  He had 7-stepped in st. Pete, I think, but had put himself back in the program after he started doin' the harder stuff.  Yeah, He had had his forearm tatoos removed but his skin was all scarred up where they had been.  First time I ever saw or heard  of anyone gettin' their tats removed.  That was about '86 or so.

Or by "SP" maybe you mean St. Pete.  I guess you must've known him on his original program and I knew him when he came back into the program in Springfield.  Been wonderin' as I have with so many others, whatever became of the cat.

Sorry, St. Pete.  I think we're talkling about the same Bob...Schuuls or something.  He had tatts and they made him get them removed.  No pussy laser surger then.  They sliced it layer by layer.  I'll never forget the sight of him sitting in the back of group, arms bandaged with bloodied gauze, in obvious excruciating pain and people around him lifting his arms to make him fucking MOTIVATE.  I had no idea he ended up in VA.  Wow.

Sorry ladies...was not trying to create a debate over rectal exams with my post. I was a L&D nurse for many years and my sister is an OB/GYN doc, so I wasn't just " talking out my ass" ..lol
If some of you have never had one, well then good for you, but I was reallly just trying to  make a point about what happened to the previous poster during her exam in straight. I was just trying to show that he probably wasn't trying to be cruel or saditstic when he did her rectal exam, just doing his exams the way he was taught.
As I said, many doc's, if they don't NEED to do them don't, but if you go in for your next annual exam and your doc feels something suspicious during your vaginal exam, you'd better believe the next thing to come is the rectal exam.

Ask you nurse friend WD, if this person has been in nursing for more than 5 years, they'll tell you the same. It is still for many docs, part of your routine exam.

No problem.  Perhaps you would  like to hear of another incident involving Alice Rollins,  a goat, and a pound of animal tranquilizers.

If so, let me know, I will enlighten you as to what went on that day in the carpet room at Straight.

I'd certainly like to hear about it whenever you're up to the task. I realize that the subject matter will no doubt be rather disturbing to read, but I would rather be informed about these atrocities than remain in blissful ignorance of them.

I, too am filled with dread and shivering as I do my best to recall the time of this incident. I was on second phase, and due to the shortage of upper phasers at the time, was sent out of group on "responsibilities", cleaning up the building, when I opened an intake room, expecting it to be empty but in need of vacuuming, when instead a beheld a sight that nearly made me wish I were blinded by it so that I woulsd never see such horror again.  Ser. Staff Nazi Alice Rollins was suspended from the ceiling in a device I have been told is called a "Love Swing", she was unclothed with her legs widely spread, and was pouring copious amounts of a white powder over her womanly parts, and encouraging an obviously aroused male goat, weighing perhaps forty pounds or so, to lick it off of her.  She ordered me to shut the door and swore me to secrecy, after which she gave me a few whiffs of the white powder.  I vacuumed the rest of the building in record time, cleaned all the bathrooms, washed the windows, scrubbed the walls, shined Dr. Newton's shoes, made coffeee for the adult staff and front office , and polished the floors of the entire building outside of the group romm in 45 minutes.  For my diligence, and my silent complicity in Alice Rollins' dirty little secret,  I was promoted to third phase at the next open meeting.  I copped out the first day at school, unable to rislk ever seeing a sigh tlike that again.

Yes, it is truly disturbing, and I find it to be the subject of the  worst of all the Straight-related nightmares and flashbacks I have experienced over the years.  My ears still ring with the bloodcurdling shrieks of ecstasy that gurgled from within ALice Rollins' rubbery folds, the disgusting squishing sounds of the goats tongue lapping up what was obviously some sort of amphetamine off of Alice's nether regions still haunt me, echoing through my mind like the baying off rabid dogs at a blood red moon.  My skin tingles with revulsion at the memory of the smell of ,..........

.....I apologize for the delay in posting this, I must have blacke dout rather than relive the memory of what was for me a traumatic episode the likes of which I have never seen since, and I am a six year veteran ER nurse in a viloent city on the eastern seaboard of the United States, I have seen my share of nauseating scenes and have grown somewhat desensitized to them, but in no way will I ever be able to deal with the memory of wha t I saw that day at Straight.

Bandages or neosporin for the pickers and cutters.

That really pisses me off, so badly that I had to step away for a few days to come back and reply. When I was in Straight in Richardson, I had so many cuts on my arms. Staff took me into the bathroom and poored rubbing alcohol over my sores. The doctor never looked at them. I never got one bandage of any kind. When they would restrain me, the kids would get grossed out and try not to touch them, some would start gagging cause you could see the bumpy fatty tissue inside my sores, maybe it was the blood that made them gag. When I left and went to the mental ward, they counted like 50 sores on my arms. I never got a bandage.

Sorry bout that.  I was in Irving, so Richardson was somewhat before my time.  We were always warned about the "good ole days" when things were so rough we had it posh in comparison, whatever that was all about.

Anyways, you should know that it was the "beginning of the end" when I was there, the state was putting strategic pressure on the program there in Texas, so the staff began implementing strategic responses that carried the illusion of concern in them....all without changing really anything much at all.  Kids were offered first aid supplies, but more often than not you just saw someone being four pointed to their chair all day long so they couldnt reach their wounds while in group.  They stopped calling cop-outs cop-outs, and called them elopers.  What the fuck this accomplished is beyond me, but you get the idea.  Ex-parents were largely responsible I think for helping to focus the attention on what was going down there.  it was rare that anyone got pulled who wasnt a long time non-compliant who was nine of ten likely to be someone who self mutilated.  No one was graduating hardly at all, so when thats the only product being churned out, someone is bound to start asking questions.

They used to say that about Phoenix. "If you think this is bad you should have been here when it was the real Straight." Which I do think the Straight staff had to clean some of it up in order to reopen but who knows.
However, our med cart had lots and lots of behavior modifying drugs. I think almost everyone there was on them. The second day of my program this cartoon- like psychiatrist came and asked me if I heard any voices that were not there. After spending a solid week high on PCP, I heard all kinds of lovely things but it wasn't because I was psycho. So nice Mr. Shrink put me on an anti-psychotic and left me on it for the entire 17 months I was there. Only to find out by my real doc that the drug he put me on was only a temporary drug and that I was lucky to not have facial ticks from Mr. Shrink's stupidity. We also had a nurse that stayed on staff. Thank God we did not have to have pelvic exams as part of intake![/quote]

So it seems like str8 had no middle ground regarding meds...either little to no meds or overmedicating....both ways are fucked up.

If I remember right, in Cincy (84-86) you couldnt get an freakin aspirin w/o permission and only then if you were lucky....most often I believe those requests were denied...yet somewhere along the line str8 switched to the overmedication approach...wonder how they made that leap?

no aspirin or anything, even when I had dental work done.  The host mom did give me neosporin after I cut myself (frustration induced carving, I felt like a cagwed animal, which is about right....).  Not a bit of concern from the staff, though.

I may have told this story somewhere here already, but it applies.

One night I was walking my newcomers out to the car after group and I had this one new girl with me on one arm (we were switched to "arm linking" instead of belt-looping) and she decided she was going to go directly ape-shit on me out of nowhere. Rather than risk certain death by way of letting go of her and getting confronted, I chose to risk certain death by being drug to the ground and my head subsequently smashed into a parking space divider instead.  I blacked out for a few moments and came around finally, trying desperately to locate her so i wouldnt get put on a refresher for losing my newcomer.  Funny that, how my mind was so hardwired it kept trying to function for the program even when my consciousness had left the building.

I had a concussion, no doubt...it was several hours before i was right enough to function properly.  Anyways, staff just sort of asked me if I was ok, and I said I thought so but that I couldnt see or think right.  They were satisfied that I was standing and sent me on my way with the host parents.

Just as we were pulling away, one guy on staff from California came up to the window and knocked.....he looked at me and i thought I was gonna get ripped right there in the car, but instead he told us all, the parents included....that we had permission to go DIRECTLY to the hospital or emergency room if we thought it was necessary, and all blanketed permission to do whatever needed to be done.  Looking back now, I know by the look on his face that he didnt give that permission because he was told to.  He did it because he knew something very bad had happened and wanted to help me.

Apparently he wasnt the only one who thought it was a bad situation.  Several months later when the investigators came to take interviews with the clients, I was asked for by name, and specificaaly questioned about that night in detail.  Someone who had left the program or parent or something had told them about it.  Of course, i dont recall what I told them, I am sure i tried to play it off as trivial....again, fear at the helm.

I was lucky, one girl who got her arm broken (shes dead now) got nothing but a sling.
